Another alternative might be to take your machine to the meeting there are tons of lan experts to give you help..
I believe you can make it go with ndiswrapper. If a machine turns up to one of our Saturday Workshops, I'm sure someone would be keen to help make it go.
(I realise its tough to do this while on the road in the US, but maybe you'll find a local LUG over there to help John!)

It was the ndiswrapper route I was struggling with I did as the following said with stable, then with testing http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=31926 Stable 1.16 http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93482&package_id=99148 Testing 1.17 http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93482&package_id=167243&release_id=417606 The one thing in the laptops favour (perhaps) is when I went to edit /etc/ndiswrapper/bcmwl5/*.conf There were no files found in that directory I changed to a different "how to" I forget which, and it suggested using the zip file found at http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=186 Which I duly unzipped in /etc/ndiswrapper Still after following the directions there was no *.conf file to edit I am about to try something dodgy with the .inf file (treat *that* as the .conf file) and see what, if, any difference that makes. Failing that I am heading back into town and returning the laptop
