It sounds like you've snapped the little plastic part off inside the connector. You probably need to get the whole connector replaced.
You might also have damaged the controller if anything got shorted, but I've found they're surprisingly robust. Mine was shorted for about 15 minutes before I noticed (from the burning smell) and it still worked afterwards.

I tried with Knoppix 4 and it detected all the devices however my front Usb ports are broken I then retried it with Ubuntu 6.10 and much to my embarrassment I then ran clean up Desktop by Name and the Icons were hidden behind folders. However I also checked /media and the items weren't present previously but they are now
