Okay, thanks a lot Chris, that's really helpful. I admit I was suprised no one suggested I do a e2fsk before disk partioning since this used to be standard practice back in the day when I last fuzzily recall doing this kind of thing.
I think given the habit of modern OS'es to check and fix (minor) issues on filesystems to have made this something that people are a little less mindful of ... although I would suggest that this would indeed be the best path to go down.
So everything seems to be set-up for the disk partioning exercise now and I've got the go ahead on disabling the DMA but the question I now have is there seems to be two options; Do I
i) merely make some free space available for Xubu (i.e. just shrink current root (/) and let the Xubu installation decided how to do the actual pationing and naming or ii) set up some partions for Xubu and a boot sector for it (actually will I even need two boot sectors for two linux flavours?) and tell it where to go?
Xubuntu should be able to partition as part of the installation - long gone are the days where one needed to pre-partition drives prior to an install (and even then it was mostly due to the requirement of having funky partitioning schemes...) Please note that (from memory here) - Ubuntu generally gives you three? choices - wipe the entire disk and let Ubuntu partition the drives, Use the free space (With ubuntu making the decisions) or partitioning yourself (with a nice graphical tool)
If/when a new root directory is made for Xubu will it named root (/) also? Can you have two sector named root(/) on the same hard drive?
The root directory is a convention used by the Operating system (generally) - so both your Redhat and Ubuntu will both have their own 'root' partitions - can anyone point out any difference with this, as I am aware that some versions of Linux will in fact mount based on the partition "Label"?
