Here's an easier way to do it:
Go to a command prompt and type: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Once you've selected all the right options and it's finished: - save any information - Press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace - login - choose your resolution
This fixed things for my Ubuntu PC
