How do I install VMWare player for Linux?

I have tried to manually install the software, downloading from
wmware.com. I unzipped the .tar.gz, but what do I do next? 

I have tried to install it via Synaptic. This downloads the
vmware-player-modules file, but it doesn't create the program.
    

If you are on Ubuntu Dapper, you can use "sudo apt-get install
vmware-player".
