I have a mirror of the complete edgy repository (several Gb) on a 2.5" external hdd [1] so I just add lines like this to my /etc/apt/sources.list deb file:/media/sdb1/path/to/repository/ubuntu edgy main ...etc Then apt treats it just the same as a cdrom or http source, except that it skips the download step, and I just do 'aptitude <whatever>' as usual.
