Thanks for all the help.

Bnonn I tried:
...
$ sudo aptitude update
$ aptitude install gnucash
Update worked, but install didnt.  The highlight (lowloght) was:
** Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched
"gnucash" **

Then I tried Synaptic Package Manager (as Matt suggested) - Did not
work at first, but tweaked it a bit and got it going.  It took forever
to download - I think my modem must be in v.34 Mode or something -
will have to investigate.

BTW GNUCash seems to suit our needs.
