Windows (any version) will occasionally overwrite GRUB or any other bootloader, usually only when reinstalling Windows but possibly also when updating bitlocker encryption which is built into the windows bootloader too. It makes no difference what version of Linux you're running, the problem is with Windows not recognizing or caring that you even have another OS on the machine. Repairing the GRUB bootloader is very easy once you know how anyway just boot from any recent live Linux CD and run four of five commands in a terminal. It doesn't even have to be an Ubuntu CD, can be done from puppy or any common rescue disk. On 15 October 2010 09:43, Sandwalker <sandwalker(a)gmail.com> wrote:
As far as I can tell, Maverick seems to work just fine. However, I haven't installed it yet. Has anyone here got a dual-boot system with Windows 7? I've read about this bug where grub2's bootloader is overwritten after running Windows, and I don't know if it applies to this distribution as well -- I'm rather wary of upgrading (a clean install in this case, as I'm skipping Lucid) as a result.
I would like to upgrade, as it finally fixes the inability of my laptop to mute the internal speakers when headphones are plugged in (that's really the major reason why I want to upgrade; the other one is that Karmic's running rather slowly after a year).
