I'd suggest logging in via the console (hold ctrl and alt and press f1) as your user, then running
sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
and making sure it has installed all the packages it wants. it sounds like it might have failed to finish the upgrade.
If you are prompted for a password when running a command starting with sudo, enter your users password.
And assuming it lets you switch to the console, when you have finished with those commands you can either * leave the console by pressing ctrl+alt+F7 to get back to the graphical interface (although that will probably still be locked up); or * you can type "reboot" into the shell in the console. If you want more instructions, email the list again. Otherwise if you can wait you can always bring your machine along to the next WLUG meeting or wlug Saturday workshop... John
