'In addition to acknowledging that free programs can compete with commercial software in terms of quality, the memorandum calls the free software movement a "long-term credible" threat and warns that employing a traditional Microsoft marketing strategy known as "FUD," an acronym for "fear, uncertainty and doubt," will not succeed against the developers of free software.'
And who can forget the whole TradElect fiasco <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TradElect>. Microsoft initially crowed about the LSE’s choice of Windows Server over Linux (picture of actual Microsoft ad enclosed). But after two years of repeated outages, a new CEO came in, ripped it all out, and put in Linux. I don’t think the credibility of Windows Server for mission-critical deployments ever recovered from that. For those who talk about “Embrace, Extend and Extinguish”, remember that Microsoft has already gone all the way to “Extinguish” with Linux and open source, and failed.
