The UN has been trying for a while to take over governance of the Internet and its standards. This has been fought off by a US-led effort in favour of the IETF, ICANN etc -- all the bodies we know and love.
Now it seems the US Government is making noises <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/05/us_government_icann_iana/> about taking the stewardship of Internet standards back from ICANN. Regardless of how badly ICANN has been performing, what’s the bet this won’t be used as an excuse by other Governments for exerting their own control?
