Replying on the run, but I can confirm the HL-2240D is automatically picked up by the version of CUPS that comes with the current LMDE release.
Although, I did have cause to write the following blog post with instructions to fix some wonky alignment issues! :-)

I used LInux Mint Debian Edition for a year or so about a year ago. I liked the rolling release, but found some programmes, notably Firefox were slow to be updated. What caused me to go back to the XFCE version was the printing system. I had to use a different CUPS version to get the PC Club Brother HL-2240D printer to work. Then when CUPS was finally updated it wouldn't even find my Brother HL-2020 which is found first time on nearly all distros i have tried. Has LMDE worked with all your printers?
I am having success with Sparky Linux (LXDE version) which is a rolling release based on Debian Testing. So far (two months) it has proved both up to date and stable (and fast) on my laptop.
