We are now the proud owners of a Netcom Mega I Modem which is proportadly Linux Compatible. I have connected it up physically and have some light on and we can see the drivers in our 64 bit Ubuntu 8 operating system.
However how do we run the files. There is an exe file therre called setport.exe which looks like it might be useful be we don't know how to run it.
I guarantee none of the software that came with it will be even remotely useful. First of all, make sure that the serial port is connected up inside the computer case and enabled in BIOS. A few computer assemblers don't bother doing this since serial ports are rarely used these days. If you're seeing lights blink during bootup then this is probably all OK. Make sure everyone who might need to dial out is in the dialout group (System, Administration, Users and Groups, tick the appropriate boxes) Install gnome-ppp. (sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp) -- You'll need some other sort of internet connection to do this -- find someone with broadband or set up ICS. If you get stuck here we'll do it at the workshop. gnome-ppp will show up on the internet menu, and it should be as easy as entering the phone number, username and password just like in Windows If for some reason Ubuntu didn't automatically set up a link for /dev/modem you might need to change the modem device in gnome-ppp. It'll almost certainly be /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1.
