I think this last issue is unrelated, on boot I get "ror: temporary unable to resolve name"
Are you connected to the Internet when you boot? If you're set up to do DHCP and not connected, you won't be able to resolve your own hostname. This is harmless and can be ignored in most cases.
I get that "ror" message too, which is odd cos I couldn't figure out exactly what was printing out "ror". However, the reason for the message (in my case) is that ubuntu is running ntpdate on boot after bringing up the interfaces but dhcp hasn't assigned an ip address to my interface yet - my dhcp server seemed to be a bit slow. If I run ntpdate manually once I get to user login, dhcp has worked its magic by then and it all works. John
