I reread everything and I came to the conclusion that I need to: sudo ethconfig eth0 <number> Then when I am finished I may have to check to see if I need to reset my loopback number: 127.0.0.1 Does this seem right to you??

You don't need to do anything to the loopback (lo) interface.
