Do you have a Asus K52 or similar (with the conexant chipset?) because I have the same problem with the headphones. 10.10 didn't fix it for me so I'm about to follow this post which looks promising - http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9970601&postcount=145.

My home machine has the mbr being over written problem, apparently
changing the grub version fixes this (fresh install uses grub2 rather
than 'grub' which works fine?), however I dont boot windows so I have
never actually implemented that to test it.
