They didn't work from the live cd but a small piece fell out of the front usb port. Maybe thats the reason it wouldn't work and its also effecting the rear ports as well.
It sounds like possible hardware but I'd also try a different live CD that you know worked previously e.g. Ubuntu 6.06 if it worked for you. It might be a kernel or udev issue also. If it works on another version then log a bug for it.
