Please excuse me if I say all the wrong things, or call stuff by the wrong names as all of this stuff goes way over my head. The problem I have is this: my partner has just installed open office on my mums pc which is good, but we live on the Kapiti Coast and she lives in Thames. We will courier her pc up to her, but this is where the problem starts. We need someone who is familiar with it to plug it in and configure it properly (I think thats what my partner said has to be done??) Is there any one of your group who lives close to Thames or is able to help us out with this? We would be willing to pay for their time and travel. My mum will need a little help in getting started on it too - how to do the basics and how to get onto the internet - shes 78 and is used to using only Microsoft products. We got rid of the microsoft stuff as Andy (my partner) says its unstable and full of security risks. Are you able to put a call out to your members and see if anyone is able to help us. Problems with 2.6.11 on FC3

Hey Guys, I have installed FC3 on my server machine and have noticed huge problems when running the latest kernel release, 2.6.11-1.27_FC3. When ever I try to copy a larger amount of files from one partition to another the machine locks up and just dumps millions of lines of what looks to be a stack dump, I left it dumping to see what it said when it stoppped, but after 8 hours while I was at work it still was running past too fast to read. I have switched back to the stock 2.6.9 kernel that comes on the CD and have no problems doing the same thing. Anyone else had any problems with the newer kernel pacakge? Side note, I had originally planned to run Ubuntu on the machine but couldn't get it to boot off a Raid 1 /boot and / on LVM, FC3 handled installing on this setup without an issue. Raymond

Sad news

Just received this from judenlinz(a)orcon.net.nz, and thought it pertinent to pass it on to the list. -- Craig Sadly Lindsay had a heart attack then a few days later a massive stroke and died on Mon 16th May. His Memorial service was on Sat 21st May. He loved communicating with you all, receiving letters and experiences etc. As Lindsay was the computer buff and I am not, i have to shut down the computers. Know that you all made him very happy with your communications. To those who shared the same hope as Linz we look forward to the resurrection when we will once again see him on the Paradise Earth. GPG Keysigning Tomorrow Night

Hi, I'm doing a bit of an impromptu talk tomorrow night on PGP/GPG, what it is, why you'd want to use it, etc. At the end we'll organise an impromptu keysigning party. Given the late notice and the fact that there is not likely to be a huge number of people with keys I'm not going to organise anything using the fancy methods. So if you want to get your key signed you need to bring - A trusted copy of your key fingerprint (preferably multiple copies that are printed, so you can give them away) - At least one form of government issued photo id (two are preferred). Hi all As a suggestion, suggest asking Nandor Tanczos visit a few sites like http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/index.html were the mplayer project foresees having to shut down if the EU adopts the software patent laws. By the way there is a petition to the EU at this page, mainly intended for within the EU but they do appreciate support from elsewhere in the world too. This is needed for shifting a phone system from one building to the another. Please reply to me directly (off list).
