Presumably this tread is inspired by WIRED's article: http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Build_A_Digital_Music_Server See also: http://en.jinzora.com/ I've been toying around with a PVR/DVR system back in SA (MythTV, etc), as there's very little in this country. Don't like the idea of having to b in front of ur telly @ a particular time / 4am, otherwise you miss the next episode of u'r series, or having 2 sit through ad's for 'feminine products'/promo for some crackpot I think there might be legislative restrictions on 'time-shifting' broadcast... Check that you implement DLNA with your streaming server (ref: OpenDLNA) so it works PnP with devices such as PS3 & PSP (XBox 360 & Wii?) Also, if you utilise a firewall with DynDNS (such as IPCop) & port forwarding, you can place your slimserver onto the 'net, & thus have a 'radio station'. Been using slimserver for a few years (pre-logitech days). SqueezeCenter

Hi all Came across the nifty SqueezeCenter today: http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_features.html It's a perl-based, open-source, mp3-streaming server with a really cool web-interface. Installation is fairly simple, if you're running Ubuntu (or any debian-based distro): http://wiki.slimdevices.com/?DebianPackage It basically involves the following steps: - add the following line to your apt sources list ("sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list"): deb http://debian.slimdevices.com unstable main - update the cache sudo apt-get update - and install the center sudo apt-get install squeezecenter A minimal setup after installation finishes is just providing the top-most directory of your MP3 collection. Just point your browser to the center's address (http://A.B.C.D:9000/) and click your way through the wizard (no need for registration or those little SqueezeBox players). After the initial setup and the collection scan has finished, just point any MP3 player that can handle URLs, like Rhythmbox, to the server's streaming URL (http://A.B.C.D:9000/stream.mp3) select your machine as "player" in the web interface and just add songs to your playlist, play/pause/stop streaming, etc. That is the killer-app for my home-network that I was looking for for ages, providing an easy to use web-interface for streaming my MP3s over WLAN! The cool thing is, that each machine connecting to the center maintains its own playlist. Not sure if it is entirely relevant, but maybe these could help: keywords to look/search for are 'PPP _and_ stupid mode'... I set one up for a friend last year with KOL. I seem to remember that you needed to use Gnomeppp, The other dialers would not connect. and yes, go to setup, options and tick the box "ignore terminal string" (stupid mode) I have an idea their was something else I did but I can't remember at the moment. Kppp and WVdial couldn't be set to ignore init strings. David
