Waikato ICT Community - Drinks and Get Together Come and join the Waikato Branch of the NZCS for a get together next Thursday (20th November). Upgrading from ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 on my laptop

Would it be a good idea to upgrade as I have every thing working on my laptop including wireless internet I have already upgraded my Desktop Computer by doing a fresh install and have eventually got everything working but with my laptop I had a considerable amount of help from wlug members. I am on the bludge for a pci video card and an agp video card. Hey Daniel Thanks for the great advise on ic/ppp settings. I had my old win 98 machine that I do my maths work on and it had a modem, so i thought id give it a bash with your instructions in your emails. I had to consult a website http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics98, turns out that I had to install netBEUI and install ICS from the win 98 add new programs menu, but once that was done, my linux acer and my linux dell both had good connections. I had to remove the static IP address in my Vista machines network card settings, but once i had, it connected too. So thank you for all your help, and to the other members of WLUG who helped me out. Now I have to find an old PCMCIA network card for my old Dell 133 Laptop, or a serial network connection if there is such a thing Cheers all Glenn.

It could be something to do with setting the software repositories correctly before starting these managers up. I think there should be something called "Sources" or similar on the system menu. It may need these set right before first starting. Maybe just starting is sufficient to get some basic settings and repositories but needs to be restarted before they become effective. Ubuntu failing to install/work

Hi All, Have tried to install Ubuntu 8.10 desktop 386 with a number of different c/d's First a rc then two final desktops including trying the live versions also an alternate install. They all have a common problem, booting to the welcome/login then crashing to a black or plain light brown blank screen The install appears to slow down as it progresses, this is particularly true of the alternate, the last few files take a long time to config/install. I thought that it may be a memory problem and increased the ram to 700+ however that made no difference at all. Someone suggested that my psu may be faulty but I have installed puppy linux in two or three times without a problem. Knoppix live works just fine Any help would be appreciated. Regards John
