passwords

hey all I have a dell laptop (Inspiron 3200) running Ubuntu 5.10 (very well to I might add, not like the 64bit Ubuntu 8.04 on my acer). Anyhow, when I want to look at files on that machine via. LAN, I am presented with a password dialog box. When I enter my password that I use as admin on that machine, It tells me that the password is wrong. Can anyone tell me where in the the filesystem is the file that contains the passwords, that I can edit with GEDIT? Glenn

We first got Puppy Linux to work off the cd . But he wants to run Ubuntu 8.10 However when we go to load it it defaults to the command line and we don't know what we are doing. cups driver for dcp-115c

hi all Im trying to get my Brother DCP-115C multifunction printer to work under Linux ubuntu 8.04. Upon trying to get my DCP-115c to work, I have consulted the brother website: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_drivers.html#2 It reccommends that users of the DCP-115c use the MFC-210C package, however, I cannot get the brother MFC-210C package to install' because when I do it comes up with the 'wrong architecture - i386' error message. Upon further reading of the page I read the following for AMD 64bit users: "For AMD64 bit users: Our CUPS drivers and CUPS wrapper drivers have been developed and optimised for 32 bit Linux distributions, a list of which can be found here: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/linux_config_list2.html However, if you are using an AMD64 bit distribution, we recommend you try copying the file named "brlpdwrapper" from /usr/lib/cups/filter to /usr/lib64/cups/filter." I have checked my /usr/lib/cups/filter directory and discovered that there was no file named "brlpdwrapper'. No surprises there, since the MFC-210C package would not install. Any suggestions? Glenn.

installing brother DPC-115C

Hi all I am attempting to install a brother dpc- 115 multifunction printer to my newly ubuntu'd laptop. Hi Bruce Should explain that I am running Ubuntu 7.04 on my Asus Laptop. Ok, when I go to the add printer setting in the administration menu, When I click on add new printer, it reads the CUPS database and shows that the two printers that I have connected to the Asus via. USB are detected. One being the Brother DCP-115c and the other is my little Xerox Phaser 3115. When I select the Brother printer and click on Forward, it shows in the manufacturers box at the top Brother..which is good. Underneath is the model of printer..cannot see DCP 115c in the menu. According to the Brother website, I should be using the MFC-210 Debian driver (Is this correct..?). Which also isn't listed. Ok, if I need to install CSH, where can I find this package and how do I install it (bearing in mind that I am going to have to transfer any drivers to the machine via. USB stick since I dont't as yet have the network operational on the Asus. Please excuse my ignorance as I have NO experience with CUPS or printing documents in a linux OS environment.
