2009 NZCS National Update - General Progress and Certification 03 February 2009: 12:30pm - 2:00pm The Hub at Wintec City Campus, Gate 5 Tristam Street, Hamilton Join NZCS President Don Robertson and CEO Paul Matthews as they present an update on national activity including detailed information about the main drive for this year - the Certification initiative being implemented in 2009. NZCS Work Programme NZCS Chief Executive Paul Matthews will outline the achievements thus far in the context of the overall Work Programme for 2008/2009 including the issues NZCS has addressed and is addressing and why. This will include NZCS's work for the ICT profession, computing and ICT education standards and the community at large, and the plans for 2009 and beyond. NZCS Professional Certification Next NZCS President Don Robertson, who also chairs the Certification Working Group, will cover the background information and research that has lead to the development of the Professional Certification/Charter Programme. This programme is designed to ensure NZ ICT professionals gain the same opportunity as our counterparts in other countries by having their level of professional competency and skills accredited against an internationally-accepted standard. The professional certification and recognition programme for ICT professionals is happening - this is your chance to find out more. Have your say, or find out more More importantly, however, this event will give you the opportunity to have your say about the current direction of NZCS and the profession generally. Whether you think we've got it right or wrong, we want to know about it. This is a not-to-be-missed event for members and non-members alike. These ports have matured significantly over the past twelve months and are beginning to approach the point where they are robust enough for general use. The open source KDE desktop environment, which is one of the two most popular Linux desktop stacks, underwent a significant transformation during the transition to version 4. Many parts of the environment were written from scratch and large parts of the underlying development infrastructure were overhauled. One of the major changes that accompanied this transition was the adoption of Qt 4, the next major version of KDE's underlying toolkit. Qt licensing changes that coincided with the launch of Qt 4 made it possible for the KDE developers to port the desktop to Windows and Mac OS X. The porting effort was also greatly simplified by KDE's adoption of the CMake build system. I've been asked to recommend a system for an 80-yr old first time user living in the South Island. My first choice would be naked DSL, VOIP phone, Ubuntu. However, there may be constraints like dialup access only. Do you have any "off the cuff" alternative solutions/suggestions? Michael

LCA2010 in NZ

It was just announced that Wellington will host the next years LCA. www.penguinsvisiting.org.nz I couldn't be happier having just attended my first conference and being able to confirm what an unbelievable experience it ss. There is an amazing amount of work that goes into putting on the conference so I look forward to seeing if wlug can assist in some way. A thought I had today was helping to fund members to go if they are interested. I'll be discussing that idea with the committee this year and keeping in touch with the lca10 team. Anyhow greetings from Hobart, I didn't forget about WLUG while I was here and have a few leads on presenters for the next year. Best, John

Simon Phipps in NZ

Simon Phipps, head of Open Source Projects at Sun is in NZ on the 25th and 26th of this month. He's speaking in Wellington 5 pm on Monday the 26th. Is there a possibility that an engagement could be organised at Waikato Uni for him. He is a brilliant speaker and has a wealth of knowledge and opinion on Open Source in general. I'd be prepared to do any donkey work required.
