OpenOffice for non-profits 12 March

Greetings all, On Thursday, 12 March, WLUG will be co-sponsoring several talks on OpenOffice.org repeated throughout the day at St. Paul's Methodist Center in Hamilton. Our presenter will be Graham Lauder. Graham is the marketing contact for OpenOffice.org in New Zealand. Last year he gave an excellent presentation at our Software Freedom Day event. Since that time OpenOffice 3 has been released, and this will be a good time to catch up with him about whats changed in this new version. The event is a collaboration between the 20/20 Waikato Trust, and Community Waikato. http://waikato2020.wainet.org/ http://www.ssw.org.nz/ These talks are for the benefit of not-for-profit organizations and the communities they serve. Linux, OpenOffice.org and other Free/Open Source Software applications are being used more and more by not-for-profits due to lower cost, no licensing hassles, and because of the high quality of the software most of all. OpenOffice.org has a page dedicated to the ways non-profits can benefit from using it's software here: http://why.openoffice.org/why_nfp.html These talks are open to WLUG members, we are a not-for-profit incorporated society after all. We Linux users value the empowerment and freedom FOSS software gives us. This is an opportunity to spread the word about our group to people who share these values. If you are an employee, volunteer or associated with a non-profit in any way, these presentations are intended for you. If you know someone who may be interested in this talk, please pass along this information. NZCS Consultation Workshop on Professional Certification 11 March 2009: 5:00pm - 7:30pm The Bill Gallagher Hub Wintec City Campus (Gate 5) Anglesea Street, Hamilton This is your chance to have your say about the upcoming Professional Certification Programme. Certification Programme NZCS is in the process of designing and implementing a Professional Certification Programme for ICT Professionals. This internationally-aligned certification has the potential to redefine our profession, and put ICT on equal footing with other professions, such as Accountancy, Medicine and Engineering. "Professional Certification" is the cornerstone of a profession, and helps define and recognise true professionals. This is an overarching certification and is NOT the same as technical certifications; ie it is similar to "Chartered Accountant" or "Chartered Engineer" certifications for those professions rather than technical certifications (such as Microsoft or Cisco certs), although technical certifications are aligned with it. Certification Workshops This facilitated interactive workshop is your chance to not just hear about the detail of how this programme will work, but to provide significant feedback into the process as well. Senior NZCS staff will work through the details step by step then lead discussion around why particular routes have been chosen and decisions made, other options available, and what the participants believe are the best options. Who's invited? Everyone is welcome. Professional Certification is for the entire sector - not just existing NZCS members - and we encourage everyone to come along and get involved. Relay for Life March 7, 2009

Okay the Relay for Life is coming up and James suggested that we put a group together to help raise our profile and also help those with Cancer. Now James has had a few things crop up and is unable to help out, however there are a few others of us keen to put together a group. You can find more details about it here http://www.relayforlife.org.nz/index/event?EventID=35 Its on March 7, 2009 Key points: * Teams consist of 10 or more: a Team Captain is elected, a Team name selected, and members submit a registration fee which will vary according to where the event is being held. Teams are encouraged to set and achieve their own FUNdraising goals in advance of the Relay and to be as creative as they wish about how they will walk, stroll or run around the track. FUNdraising can be achieved on either an individual basis or as a team. * At least one member of the team should be on the track for the duration of Relay to keep the baton passing. They are encouraged by their supporters and the electric and celebratory atmosphere that is created by the trackside entertainment and the vibrancy of everyone camping together overnight. * After you have registered you will receive a thank you confirmation, a login and password and access to the team captain and team member pages. * Cost $15 per person + whatever fund raising we can make So can I have a show of hands please who would like to help out. Kubuntu 8.10 KDE4.2 Akonadi and Kmail

Hello, Just wondered if anyone was using KDE 4.2 and had success getting Akonadi to access their mail and display it in Kmail. I can access an address boo k( via Kontact) to display via Akonadi; and stop and start the Akonadi service without errors. I have it connecting to a few IMAP email accounts but nothing actually get displayed in Kmail. I've tried Mailody http://www.mailody.net but that doesn't seem to connect to Akonadi yet. Perhaps its not functional in Kubuntu 8.10 yet? http://pim.kde.org/akonadi/ Anyone having success or similar experiences. Chris
