NEW ZEALAND PYTHON USER GROUP Media Statement October 5, 2009 IMMEDIATE RELEASE "How a programming language is changing the Web" The main keynote speaker at Kiwi PyCon 2009, Joel Burton, an internationally recognised trainer and presenter, will explain how the programming language Python is becoming the language of choice for developing websites due to its simplicity and flexibility. The conference will be held at the Canterbury Innovation Incubator in Christchurch on November 7th and 8th. Other tracks at the conference will include: GUI, Science & Math, Game, and Applications. The conference will also have a dedicated Web track, which will include presentations about many Python web technologies, such as: Django, Twisted, Zope 3, Grok, and Plone. The conference has attracted a lot of interest from many universities throughout the country and staff and students from Auckland, Massey, Canterbury, and Otago universities will be presenting regarding how they've used Python in their research. “As Christchurch has the reputation of being the Silicon Valley of New Zealand, its been really great to see a number of electronics companies in Christchurch support the event”, said Tim Knapp, the conference Director. GUI frontend for pypdf

Hi there A couple of weeks ago, I needed to join two PDFs together into a single one on my Ubuntu box. Problem was, that I could only find command-line tools like pdftk to do the job, but no GUI frontend like pdftk_builder or guipdftk, which are only available for Windows. When I happened to come across the pypdf Python library (http://pybrary.net/pyPdf/) I told myself, maybe a little bit of Python-hacking could fill the void. Well, there you have it... pyPdf-GUI, a little pygtk and glade based Python frontend, released under the BSD license. And, since I thought this software might be useful to other people as well, you can find it here available for download: http://pypdfgui.fracpete.de/ On that (rather basic) website, you can download an Ubuntu 9.04 .deb package and a source archive (for other Linux flavors or older Ubuntu versions). wlug server status

To anyone using the WLUG server, Hoiho the blade hosting the home directory for user accounts, has a failing hard drive. Please don't keep any important data here, and if you do have something there now, this would be a good time to back it up. Today I was informed there is only about 600 MB of space left there. Most of the space is taken by some database backups, and I don't really see the point in removing them, when no one should be using this drive anyway. We have a replacement blade for hoiho installed which has a larger drive, but it's not plugged into the right port on the switch or something. Someone has to go to the datacenter to sort it out. Hopefully this month we will get someone up there, but we can't guarantee the drive won't fail before then. Just an FYI we are having an AGM 23rd Nov., and we will be proposing to add a sysadmin role in Rule 7 of the charter. We'll have the usual tables, power, various ISO's, Internet, coffee and light lunch, etc. Starting this month we're also going to have a regular FreeGeek build. We'll sort out a computer from parts and install Ubuntu on it, ready for donation to whoever Nettie decides will most benefit from being given a computer.

Here at Kiwi PyCon '09 HQ we've set the date that we will have the T shirts to the printer by as **Friday, October 23rd** so if you haven't registered by that time you'll miss out on your correct T shirt size! We've also already sold about half of our available conference tickets and almost 3/4 of our Pre-Conf Party tickets so get in quick to secure your place at the party/conference.
