Linux Kernel 2.6.0

The new linux kernel stable branch, 2.6.0, is nearly here. It is currently in the 2.6.0-test stage. I've been running a 2.6.0 test kernel on and off for a couple of weeks now, and thought I'd mention it on list to encourage those who feel up to it to try it out. Some new features that I've noticed: * Crypto API support, for encrypted filesystems and IPSec * (IPSec) * /sys filesystem - like the contents of /proc/sys * Much better ACPI support * STCP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) * Improved networkin * IPv6, netfilter for IPv6 * netfilter for bridges? * ALSA sound drivers have been merged * ext2 / ext3 extended attribute and ACL support * (I think) better firewire / usb2 support * ATAPI cdwriting - no need for scsi emulation any more There's a whole lot more too, i'm sure -thats just what I can remember. It seems stable, although I have odd things happen every now and then (like, a segmentation fault when rmmod'ing a module - all subsequent module operations (lsmod, rmmod, modprobe) lock up. reboot needed. oops). Certainly, once the test kernels have finished and 2.6.0 is declared "stable", this should be a good kernel. On my gentoo box, the only thing I needed to upgrade was modutils. Your mileage may vary for other distros, so make sure to read the kernel changelog and update any packages required! I think some distros (RedHat ?) have binary kernel targets for 2.6.0 already Daniel

Basically my problem is this: I have an academic who is running win2k. He also has just purchased a scientific program that runs in linux. However he also does not want to have to dual-boot or purchase anthing more. Thinking along these lines as far as both he and I could remember, mandrake allowed you to create an image that you could load to from within windows and was doing a lot of marketing on this ability a while back. I haven't seen anything more about this on their site, so I don't know about this anymore. In the end I just need to know if it can be done with any of the distros rather than a VM of some sort. I have a question as a follow on from my mandrake one... Is there any distro that can be installed into an image within windows and then run like an emulator I guess. Ie run it and it opens up the image of a linux drive from within windows, you have your filesystem/partitions created etc. all within the image. Hope this makes sense. Cheers... david

Hi guys, I ran the yoper installation disk last night.... it's not to bad. But I can't seem to get the sound card to work .... it says its not configured. how do you configure it? graphics speed

Hi, I have a scientific visualisation app (cgui from http://www.bioeng.auckland.ac.nz ) that I have tested on 3 different machines and I have found that the graphics performance is opposite to what I expected. I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers about how to figure out what might be causing the slowness on 2 of the machines. The machines are: 1. Compaq Presario 2100 series laptop. Athlon XP 2400, 512Mb Ram, Ati Radeon IGP320M. The accelerated features of this graphics chipset are not supported by XFree86. 2. PC with AMD Duron 900 + Matrox GA400 graphics adpator. 3. PC with Athon XP 1800, running Xvnc 3.3.6. Viewed across 100 Mbit ethernet from vncviewer on Windows. The thing that is confusing me is that when viewing a shaded bezier surface the best performance is on machine 3 - using vnc. I would have expected machine 1 at least to have equivalent performance to machine 3 given that the rendering is being done in software in both cases. But it is noticably a lot slower on machine 1, any ideas why that might be? I haven't done any framerate measurements, the "test" I used was to load a human torso model and rotate it with the mouse. Machine 2 was the slowest at this task, so apparently there is no hardware support for shading in the mga driver or the driver doesn't like my hardware. mandrake as an image within windows

hi everyone. i always understood that mandrake could be installed as an image within a windows partition (not that its the most ideal way but i have someone who needs this sort of thing for preference), and could be launched from win. does this still hold true? am i hallucinating? need slapping? or is there another distro that does this? any help appreciated. cheers... Regarding the AGM tonight, there won't be any presentation as such, nor will there be any set time for dealing with peoples Linux problems. However there will be a lot of people there that you might want to come along and meet, no doubt there'll be a couple of computers up that you can have a play with and we'd like to encourage as many people as possible to come along and join the society. Warehouse sale of old computer books

The Hillcrest branch of the Warehouse has a table full of old computer books going for $15 to $35. Most are too old to be of any interest but there could be some that are still useful. Most of the O'Reilly books are there - Running Linux, Perl, Unix Power Tools etc, lots of programming books - MYSQL, XML, etc and lots of Windows stuff. Running/Using (I can't remember which) Red Hat Linux 6 was there but unfortunately I didn't see any of the "Unleashed" Linux series. Konqueror - Domino Webmail

I am using Gentoo and Konqueror for browsing. When I am accessing the Domino Server (R6, running on Win2000 Server) at work to read the mail via Konqueror, the Java applet for the buttons does not download and install. This results that I can only read the messages but not do anything else. Using Mozilla, it works fine in that respect. However, for some reason the fonts and colours are all so badly mucked up, that it is no good for anything (applies to all web pages). Any idea how to get Konqueror to work with these Java applets? The library wants the exact same distro... crazy as it may seem. rhl 3.0.5. I think I've found the book and cd in the states at a 2nd hand book shop but it'll take weeks before my kids will be able to use the library. they may have to wait. $699 is why I'm running away from microsoft Thanks for your help. > > > it is. Hi guys, When I was just a newbie (still am) I got Redhat linux unleashed [kit] / Kamran Husain, Timothy Parker. 1996, from the library here in Hamilton. It's a big book with a cd. It was fine and dandy until I took it back and the lady noticed that the cd was cracked... I don't know how, but it is. So I was wondering if any one has a copy of the cd or knows where to get one cheap as they want me to pay $100 for a new set. RH 9, running squid and Dan's Guardian. How to block port 80? Students are bypassing squid and getting strait out to the net. IPchains was set up originally, but has lost it settings and know does not want to work. If your internet router is a Cisco 831/837 or upwards, you could implement WCCP (WCCP is in the Wiki Pages). WCCP is not supported on the 827, 806 or downwards. That would then mean that if the students are bypassing the proxy, they would still be going through the proxy. Why use the WikiWord for a Wiki page on the page itself?

Why are mny people using the WikiWord for a Wiki page on the page itself? For example the COBOL page has four [COBOL] links it it. I can't see the point. How do I contribute something to KDE?

I've written a Kate (KDE editor) syntax-highlighting file for Ocaml, and I'd like to contribute it to KDE. What's the most painless way to do this? Wiki for beginners

Hi everyone, I've been doing some tidying up of the Wiki (our web site) lately, with reference to the comments about beginners being lost. The home page has been rearranged so that it's (hopefully) a bit more obvious where to start. The sidebar has been shrunk a bit too (thanks Perry) so that the backlinks are more prominent. This way, you see not only what the current page links to, but what other pages link to this concept; a really good way to learn what connects to what in the world of Linux. I'd like to encourage anyone who thinks they qualify to look at http://www.wlug.org.nz/NewToLinux, and add suggestions/hints/whatever they need to get the information that you want to hear, on the wiki. (People normally add what they learn, which is why there's a lot about the newer things, but not as much about learning from the ground up, because most of the regular authors did that many years ago.) As a note, debates that are off topic for the mailing list might very well be on topic on the Wiki; please remember however it is another public face of the incorporated society so standard graces need apply. My 1cent worth. I belive, rather then up the bandwidth, telecom should allow ISPs to operate thier own full rate portals for ftp. This will be off more benifit then upping regular bandwidth! Waikato University Linux

I was discussing the use of Linux at uni today. One of the main points I was asked to defend was essentially; "Why does Linux sucks so much?" This persons experience with Linux had pretty much centred round the R block, and G basement computers at uni - and I can't say I disagree with her. As far as I can make out, those computers are running some ancient version of Slackware (I think?) with GNOME 1.4, and KDE2. Most of the other WMs seem to be broken. Fonts are abysmal, and the default browser is Netscape 4. The CDRom/fstab is only correctly setup on some of the machines. Frankly, it's embarrassing. While I can understand that the uni staff don't exactly have time to be reinstalling Linux every six months, and that stability is very important, this is the same config that I was using when I attempted second year for the first time back in 2001. >From a brief poke around the /proc/ fs, it's clear the machines are easily capable of running something far more up to date. I would really like to see something along the lines of GNOME 2.X, KDE3, a fairly recent version of say Mozilla, Galeon, or Konqueror, and for the love of god, decent fonts. Given the varsity centric nature of the WLUG, I'm hoping someone can tell me why the Linux machines are in such as sad state. Do the admins not care? If I recall correctly SCMS is investigating a move from Slackware to a different distro due to its fading support. However that's not something to take lightly, and the number of different services that SCMS support staff have to deal with means a change won't be for a while yet. I've talked about this problem with others a number of times. It's been ages since I was at uni now but when I was there all of the machines were well behind in their operating systems. Not just Linux machines but the Macs and Windows boxes too (well the few windows boxes I saw anyway). Whenever someone put down another OS based purely on using uni computers I just used to say to them "If you had an <insert their favourite OS here> machine set up the way they are at uni would you like to use that?". simple CAD program

Hi, I need to annotate some pictures with dimension lines showing angles. Does anyone know if there is a Linux 2D CAD program that will let me load a jpg image and draw dimension lines on it? Ah come on, it's like having having personalised plates on your car... Do I have personalised plates on my car ? Of course not, but if I waited a day, I could have got BGPxxx (instead of BGNxxx) then I would have had personalised number plates at no extra cost... Seriously, domain names now have a huge slice of action in the advertising industry, more and more business are branding themselves with their domain name. Mailman/Pipermail Email Address Obsfucation

Hi, Does anybody her have experience in obsfucating email addresses in list archives to prevent spam harvesting using pipermail/mailman. The standard mailman privacy options only seem to apply to mailman configuration / list information pages not the archives which are generated by pipermail, and pipermail seems to be extinct. I would like all email addresses in the archives to appear as From: Matt Brown <matt(a)m...> rather than From: Matt Brown <matt(a)myrealdomain.com> Is anybody able to offer a solution to this problem? help with backup options

Hi folks I've got Compaq ML370 G3 here running RedHat 8.0. I need to put a tape backup unit into it and have narrowed it down to two options 1) HP storage works SDLT 220 Tape Drive 2) HP storage works Ultrium 230 Tape Drive I want something that is easy to run using shell scripting for backups and of course is easy to restore. Both are supported by RH8.0 however I have never spec'd a unit for linux before. Has anyone used either Ultrium or SDLT with Linux and can let me know how they got on? KDE: how to remove the stupid dragon.

Does anyone know how to remove that stupid bloody dragon in bib that decorates KDE's logout window? "Konqi" I think it's is called. * I've used 'find' to scan my file system for PNG or JPEG files with "Konqi" in their names but it doesn't seem that simple -- all I found was an ominous image of a KDE cogwheel with a bomb in it. * I found an image that looked just like the one I wanted to removed: "/usr/share/apps/kdeui/pics/aboutkde.png". I replaced that with a transparent PNG, but that didn't help either.
