I have made some progress on this problem. I upgraded my Sun JVM from 1.3.1_08 to 1.4.2_01 and the problem has very significantly improved, not gone completely though. In due course I think I need to check out the number of objects created by my application as it may be excessive. Thanks again for all the help Roger

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Using the commands you gave me highlight that it is JBoss and the JVM that appear to be using up the resources. However, the "Too many open files" error has now transformed itself into a JVM crashing problem. I have had this problem off and on for a number of months, but it has now reached the point where I can't work around it. I am fairly convinced that it is a resource limitation problem somewhere, but I'm no expert in Linux and am running out of time. The server is on a small network, so I was wondering someone would be prepared to come around and look at it, for an appropriate fee, to see if there was any obvious (to them) problem. Cheers Roger

Help - Strangeness in a Redhat

Hey ppl, I have a couple of strange things happening on my system, if anyone has any ideas on what is cause them please let me know. First, I am running RH 9 on my workstation and have a RH 7.1 box running as a webserver. I mount /home via nfs from the RH 7 box to my workstation. I have noticed that write speeds to /home are very slow, with no obvious reason. If I copy a file from /tmp (local) to /home/raymond (remote) it takes forever, and there is next to no network usage or cpu load. Transfers in the opersite direction saturate the 10MBit connection. I am using the following options for mount: rsize=8192,wsize=8192,intr Any Ideas why writes would be so slow? I have ftp running on the RH 7 box and ftping the data to /home/raymond via ftp runs at fullspeed. Second issue is a also strange, once I reboot I am able to run up2date and any rpm command, so I can install packages but after a day or two for no reason these commands just stop. They hang on execution as if they are waiting for something. You can't stop them with CTRL-C either, you have to kill -9 the process. This means I have to reboot my machine if want to install a new package, which isn't as much of a problem now I have things installed but was initially a pain in the bu when I first built the machine. I am running an application server on Red Hat 8.0 and every so often the machine generates an error message "Too many files open" and then locks up. I have to restart the machine from the console to rectify the situation. Can anyone please tell me if there is some configuration setting that I can change to increase the number of permitted files? Is there some command that allows me to monitor the number of open files in the system? Thanks in anticipation Roger

RimuHosting is a web hosting company that does Linux Virtual Private Server hosting. http://rimuhosting.com/ RimuHosting's web page says it is based in Hamilton, but that is all. There are no names are full addresses anywhere on web site. Googling, I found a number of message boards posts promoting rimuhosting.com by someone called "Peter B". I'd feel happier if I knew more about the business than that. Other than that, does it look like good thing? A friend and I plan to run a few low volume websites from something like this. Stable Versions of Linux for Applicaiton Servers

I am wanting to set up a production application server using JBoss (written in Java) and PostgreSQL (written in C I believe), so would be interested in opinions as to what the most reliable platform would be for this. Firstly, I am wondering what flavour of Linux is considered the most reliable and what version. I am currently using Red Hat 8.0. Secondly, I am would be interested if people have experience with different JVMs for such a application. Perhaps another way of asking the same question: Are there any platforms or combination of platforms that should be avoided. Cheers Roger

Hi everyone, Because I want to see a big "Happy Birthday to me" audience, based on current relevance and suggestions prior to the AGM we're cobbling together a great topic for the next meeting: "Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam E-Mail Filtering on Linux". Suggestions for what to talk about include: * server side filtering options (MailScanner, Amavis, ClamAV & SpamAssassin, probably presented in a "How To" format with Debian Woody, Exim and Courier IMAP) * client side filtering (how bayesian filtering works, Mozilla Mail's implementation, plugging SpamAssassin into Evolution or Kmail) Since I've been doing this at work lately, I don't mind presenting it (and might even drag Greig into it too), unless anyone else would specifically like to. Linux Kernel 2.6.0

The new linux kernel stable branch, 2.6.0, is nearly here. It is currently in the 2.6.0-test stage. I've been running a 2.6.0 test kernel on and off for a couple of weeks now, and thought I'd mention it on list to encourage those who feel up to it to try it out. Some new features that I've noticed: * Crypto API support, for encrypted filesystems and IPSec * (IPSec) * /sys filesystem - like the contents of /proc/sys * Much better ACPI support * STCP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) * Improved networkin * IPv6, netfilter for IPv6 * netfilter for bridges? * ALSA sound drivers have been merged * ext2 / ext3 extended attribute and ACL support * (I think) better firewire / usb2 support * ATAPI cdwriting - no need for scsi emulation any more There's a whole lot more too, i'm sure -thats just what I can remember. It seems stable, although I have odd things happen every now and then (like, a segmentation fault when rmmod'ing a module - all subsequent module operations (lsmod, rmmod, modprobe) lock up. reboot needed. oops). Certainly, once the test kernels have finished and 2.6.0 is declared "stable", this should be a good kernel. On my gentoo box, the only thing I needed to upgrade was modutils. Your mileage may vary for other distros, so make sure to read the kernel changelog and update any packages required! I think some distros (RedHat ?) have binary kernel targets for 2.6.0 already Daniel

Basically my problem is this: I have an academic who is running win2k. He also has just purchased a scientific program that runs in linux. However he also does not want to have to dual-boot or purchase anthing more. Thinking along these lines as far as both he and I could remember, mandrake allowed you to create an image that you could load to from within windows and was doing a lot of marketing on this ability a while back. I haven't seen anything more about this on their site, so I don't know about this anymore. In the end I just need to know if it can be done with any of the distros rather than a VM of some sort. I have a question as a follow on from my mandrake one... Is there any distro that can be installed into an image within windows and then run like an emulator I guess. Ie run it and it opens up the image of a linux drive from within windows, you have your filesystem/partitions created etc. all within the image. Hope this makes sense. Cheers... david

graphics speed

Hi, I have a scientific visualisation app (cgui from http://www.bioeng.auckland.ac.nz ) that I have tested on 3 different machines and I have found that the graphics performance is opposite to what I expected. I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers about how to figure out what might be causing the slowness on 2 of the machines. The machines are: 1. Compaq Presario 2100 series laptop. Athlon XP 2400, 512Mb Ram, Ati Radeon IGP320M. The accelerated features of this graphics chipset are not supported by XFree86. 2. PC with AMD Duron 900 + Matrox GA400 graphics adpator. 3. PC with Athon XP 1800, running Xvnc 3.3.6. Viewed across 100 Mbit ethernet from vncviewer on Windows. The thing that is confusing me is that when viewing a shaded bezier surface the best performance is on machine 3 - using vnc. I would have expected machine 1 at least to have equivalent performance to machine 3 given that the rendering is being done in software in both cases. But it is noticably a lot slower on machine 1, any ideas why that might be? I haven't done any framerate measurements, the "test" I used was to load a human torso model and rotate it with the mouse. Machine 2 was the slowest at this task, so apparently there is no hardware support for shading in the mga driver or the driver doesn't like my hardware. mandrake as an image within windows

hi everyone. i always understood that mandrake could be installed as an image within a windows partition (not that its the most ideal way but i have someone who needs this sort of thing for preference), and could be launched from win. does this still hold true? am i hallucinating? need slapping? or is there another distro that does this? any help appreciated. cheers... Warehouse sale of old computer books

The Hillcrest branch of the Warehouse has a table full of old computer books going for $15 to $35. Most are too old to be of any interest but there could be some that are still useful. Most of the O'Reilly books are there - Running Linux, Perl, Unix Power Tools etc, lots of programming books - MYSQL, XML, etc and lots of Windows stuff. Running/Using (I can't remember which) Red Hat Linux 6 was there but unfortunately I didn't see any of the "Unleashed" Linux series. Konqueror - Domino Webmail

I am using Gentoo and Konqueror for browsing. When I am accessing the Domino Server (R6, running on Win2000 Server) at work to read the mail via Konqueror, the Java applet for the buttons does not download and install. This results that I can only read the messages but not do anything else. Using Mozilla, it works fine in that respect. However, for some reason the fonts and colours are all so badly mucked up, that it is no good for anything (applies to all web pages). Any idea how to get Konqueror to work with these Java applets? The library wants the exact same distro... crazy as it may seem. rhl 3.0.5. I think I've found the book and cd in the states at a 2nd hand book shop but it'll take weeks before my kids will be able to use the library. they may have to wait. $699 is why I'm running away from microsoft Thanks for your help. > > > it is. Hi guys, When I was just a newbie (still am) I got Redhat linux unleashed [kit] / Kamran Husain, Timothy Parker. 1996, from the library here in Hamilton. It's a big book with a cd. It was fine and dandy until I took it back and the lady noticed that the cd was cracked... I don't know how, but it is. So I was wondering if any one has a copy of the cd or knows where to get one cheap as they want me to pay $100 for a new set. RH 9, running squid and Dan's Guardian. How to block port 80? Students are bypassing squid and getting strait out to the net. IPchains was set up originally, but has lost it settings and know does not want to work. If your internet router is a Cisco 831/837 or upwards, you could implement WCCP (WCCP is in the Wiki Pages). WCCP is not supported on the 827, 806 or downwards. That would then mean that if the students are bypassing the proxy, they would still be going through the proxy. Why are mny people using the WikiWord for a Wiki page on the page itself? For example the COBOL page has four [COBOL] links it it. I can't see the point. Wiki for beginners

Hi everyone, I've been doing some tidying up of the Wiki (our web site) lately, with reference to the comments about beginners being lost. The home page has been rearranged so that it's (hopefully) a bit more obvious where to start. The sidebar has been shrunk a bit too (thanks Perry) so that the backlinks are more prominent. This way, you see not only what the current page links to, but what other pages link to this concept; a really good way to learn what connects to what in the world of Linux. I'd like to encourage anyone who thinks they qualify to look at http://www.wlug.org.nz/NewToLinux, and add suggestions/hints/whatever they need to get the information that you want to hear, on the wiki. (People normally add what they learn, which is why there's a lot about the newer things, but not as much about learning from the ground up, because most of the regular authors did that many years ago.) As a note, debates that are off topic for the mailing list might very well be on topic on the Wiki; please remember however it is another public face of the incorporated society so standard graces need apply.
