Hi After playing with my networking settings in Breezy, I seem to have lost some data from my /etc/hosts file. Partly it requires editing to add to add "ubuntuDavid" to it. However without it I can't log in as root to edit it. Can't find password! I can't edit it with Knoppix, I don't have permission. Is there any way to edit it or is it a reinstall job. As it is I can't connect to the net or anything requiring root privilege. Thanks David Bowen

Skype working better for Linux

Folks, I'm meant to be making a Skype call at 5 am tomorrow (yeah!!) to talk about Linux but I have had bad experiences with Skype previously with sound working (or more to the point not!) and preferred not to use Windows in case I need to look something up that I'm talking about. Anyway I've now found that Skype for Linux has a new beta out which now uses ALSA by default as the sound system instead of OSS. What this means is that sound seems to "just work" now for me. I know it is doing nothing that couldn't already be done via a command line packaging tool but a lot of companies have already invested massive amounts of money in Wise infrastructure with delegated rights, deployment systems and reporting and would love to be able to apply those processes to their Linux systems. So now with Wise and Notes I can build 2 (MS/RPM) packages following the same configuration and testing steps and have every user running the same application and configuration while my manager can manager the teams workflows and productivity via the reporting functions. I know most of you will not see it this way, but this is a massive leap forward for Linux in the Standard Operating Environments that I help design and deploy. From: "Ian McDonald" What source code package are you using? i.e. where are you getting those files you put in that directory Intel-536. These are the drivers from Intel's download site. The same ones I used on Breezy. That version number sounds like an Ubuntu kernel. Have you tried with a kernel from http://kernel.org and then using that? It is the default Ubuntu Dapper kernel. I gather compiling custom kernels is not for nube's like me. Replacing FreeS/WAN with a 2.6-kernel-friendly VPN server

I currently have a Debian Woody machine acting as a head-end IPSEC server to three sites with Cisco 837 ADSL routers. Woody is no longer maintained and I would like to upgrade the machine, and get it onto a 2.6 kernel. The IPSEC driver used by FreeS/WAN on 2.4 is klips. FreeS/WAN is no longer maintained, and has forked into OpenSwan and StrongSwan. The 2.6 kernel has its own implementation of IPSEC, called NETKEY, and klips requires a patched kernel, which I would rather not have to maintain, as there is a good IPSEC implementation in the mainline. The standard 2.6 kernel IPSEC model, using the ipsec-tools, lets you do all sorts of things with policies. In the past, I've had an ipsec0 interface, which has been given IP addresses and been able to connect routes to, and hang firewall rules off. I believe NETKEY doesn't give that. The remote sites can be considered 'trusted' insomuch as machines on their LAN are currently routed such they may as well be on the local LAN, and so it wouldn't matter too much that I couldn't apply specific firewall rules. Can anyone advise me on the easiest way to do this? Should I continue using OpenSwan? Is there a good HOWTO for this, or will I be the guy that writes it? (Assume I know everything on http://www.wlug.org.nz/26sec :) Any suggestions? Michal, are you still around, and is this right in your area of expertise? :) Craig

Running ntpdate in ppp/ip-up.d

Hi, I am trying to get ntpdate to run when my dialup link comes up. This box is running Debian/stable. I have put a simple script in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ntpdate : #!/bin/sh /etc/init.d/ntpdate start All this script does is to run /usr/sbin/ntpdate -u -b -s $NTPSERVERS However the script hangs and ps indicates that it is sleeping ( S< ). VMWare Player install

Hey guys, How do I install VMWare player for Linux? I have tried to manually install the software, downloading from wmware.com. I unzipped the .tar.gz, but what do I do next? External modem getting Fax to work

I have an old fax modem 33k that I would like to set up as a fax. when I run the automatic dectection as a modem it detects the device as /dev/ttyS0 . However when I try it out as a fax it looks for /dev/modem which it does not find and looking in the dev directory it doesn't exist So I was wondering if I should create a file and put symbolic link between the files. But I don't really know how to do this

Software Freedom Day - Public advocacy event

Hi everyone, We've had two successful installfests in the last two years, but this year, especially with the emergence of the Saturday Workshop, it seems have already got Linux installed for all the people we know that know about it. So now it's time to drum up some new interest! One of the things we have wanted to do for a while is a public advocacy event, to be held before the next installfest, so we can tell members of the public that Linux exists, it's not just a "different DOS", and that Free/Open Source Software is available for proprietary operating systems too. Software Freedom Day is an international celebration of FOSS. Now in its third year, SFD 2006 is on September 16th, and it seemed only natural to have our advocacy event on this day. What we envision is a public booth in a high foot traffic area (currently we're hoping to be able to get some space in Centreplace or Downtown Plaza). We can have three or four computers set up to show off some of the latest Linux eye candy, as well as FOSS software on Windows, and some free culture media (such as the recent Pearl Jam video clip that was made available under a Creative Commons license). We will be seeking sponsorship from businesses for giveaways and signage, so if you are interested in supporting the LUG, please get in touch with me. SFD itself is sponsored, so we should be able to receive CDs and t-shirts from them, but we will also need flyers, posters, and other giveaways. There are some advocacy guidelines on the SFD website [1] that are worth reading; the basic gist is that FOSS is not the right answer for every situation, and the positives can be accentuated without 'boring people with ideology' or pretending that FOSS is the only answer. We are looking at holding an installfest a week or two later, and our 2006 AGM soon after that (early October). Samba

Hello all, I am using a Kubuntu computer (dual-boot) on a Windows LAN. I am able to the following: -Use Samba to access Windows shares using my domain name and password (I'm a Domain Admin). -Open Microsoft documents in Open Office (If I open Open Office first and then navigate my way to the share using the "Open" dialog box. -Have the machine show up in the Windows "Microsoft Windows Network" location in My Network Places. It shows up in its own workgroup, even though I listed the name of the domain in the "domain" line in the network preferences setup (KDE System Settings). This is what I would like to able to do; 1- When I click on the Microsoft document directly from the Konqueror window, Open Office displays it start up screen, but never opens. When I open the document from inside Open Office, it opens it, but says "Samba not fully supported. Only a local copy of the file will be created." And then it gives it some jibberish name - like kdefilepickerPX0BQa.doc" How do I get it to directly open the Microsoft document from the Konqueror window? How do I fix the Samba error? 2 - I would like to be able to RDP/VNC into the Linux box from Windows. I have a VNC viewer and a putty client. Both of these, as well as Windows "Remote Desktop Connection", all give me the "Connection refused" error. How do I fix this? 3 - I would like to share some folders on the Linux box to be accessible from Windows. I can see the Linux computer in the computer list, but when I click on it, it comes up with a login box. When I type my Linux user name and password (which is the same as my Windows variants), it does not accept the authentication. This never happened when I was running Ubuntu 5.04. The file system was just shared - I didn't set anything up or install any packages. Any help appreciated! Hohua

I suspect VMWare may close down this loophole so use it while it lasts... Dapper distro (64bit)

Hi All, I successfully downloaded and installed the new Ubuntu Dapper and have so far managed to get some of my media(Mpeg and wmv) to work plus flash player. However when I try to play a DVD it suggests I may not have permission. In properties it is a root only file so how do I change this please? Regards John

Hello, I tried upgrading Kubuntu Breezy to Dapper using the "alternative CD" It didn't work particulary well and so I looked at kubuntu.org for information on what to do. The upshot is, in the words of the website, that I have "hosed" my Kubuntu install. Naturally enough I didn't do a backup before had because everything that I had done with Kubuntu in the past had worked fine. I have Suse10 installed on other partitions and I can happily see my kubuntu partitions so the file systems aren't corrupt, its just that Kubuntu won't boot anymore. I'll happily resign myself to a fresh install of Kubuntu Dapper except the only data I don't know how to retrieve is information stored in my phpwiki that relies on MySQL for the content storage. I'd forgotten I had it on my machine but now that I have remembered it I'd really like it back. Is my data recoverable from MySQL? I don't mind if I have to cut and paste everything back into the wiki. It doesn' contain heaps of data but it does contain some techobabble gems and I would like to recover them if possible. Is it doomed?

Soundcards

Hello, I was wondering if people might care to comment on their experiences with soundcards and linux support. I have a Pentium III Coppermine on a motherboard with an onboard sound card. lspci> Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 21) To date the sound card has worked fine playing ogg files and mp3's. However, where it seems to struggle is with programs like Skype and Openwengo, two VOIP applications. I believe it has something to do with operating in full duplex ie it can't record and play at the same time (I don't have Windows to test this theory) and/or the state of Alsa support for the card is such hardware mixing (which I don't think the card supports) is the only viable option for using these programs I was wondering if people might be able to recommend a PCI sound card that is well supported by/for Linux.

Ubuntu documentation

There are many reasons that WLUG recommend Ubuntu as a distribution for new and experiences Linux users alike. The one I'd like to point out today is the excellent documentation that is available. http://help.ubuntu.com/ has PDF and HTML versions of guidebooks for the new 6.06 release, covering all variants (GNOME, KDE, XFCE), as well as Ubuntu Server and packaging. The documentation is available under the GNU Free Documentation License, so you can download it and print it yourself, as well as distribute it freely. A company called Lulu are making printed versions available by money-and-postage (http://www.lulu.com/ubuntu-doc) but I imagine shipping to New Zealand would be prohibitive. If enough people are interested, WLUG could investigate having some copies printed and bound, and made available to members at cost. Craig

Open Office

To the WLUG, Howdy! Here's my first question. (BTW I am a novice Linux/ubuntu user -- dual boot and work with Windows networks) I am a Domain Admin trying to access Windows shares ( I have full access). That works fine. I've been using OpenOffice to open Microsoft documents, edit them, and save changes. This has worked fine for 2 weeks. Now, when I try to open these documents, the OpenOffice program starts launching, but never opens the document (or OpenOffice itself).
