recovering data off failing/failed hard drive

Hello people, As the linux fan at work I was offered an old machine to set up a wiki at work. I migrated much of the data off a private wiki I kept on my home machine and set up the wiki using Kubutu Server 6.06 LTS. The wiki is phpwiki and uses mysql as the backend. The machine stopped serving webpages yesterday and although I could ssh into it it was complaining that it couldn't write to the access logs when I stopped and started apache. I elected to reboot the machine but the machine no longer boots linux although it will be boot the Windows partition if you wait long enough. (i suspect Windows is running scandisk.exe 'cause it thinks something is wrong) I put in the Kubutu 6.06 server CD and tried to start a rescue session. Althought it boots it wouldn't boot of any of the partitions (my knowledge getting a little fuzzy here). At one point I tried starting the partitioner but the machine seemed to lock up so I had to switch the power button. So I put in a Damn Small Linux Live CD (kernel 2.4.26) and it boots ups fine, sets up X windows etc. I can mount /dev/hda8 fine which is my home partition but it won't mount /dev/hda7 which is the root partition and inconveniently containing the data I wish to recover. When I run e2fsck /dev/hda7 it exits early saying its a short session and asks is it a zero length partition? I run fdisk and the stop and start segments, sectors? seem in proportion to the partition size (about 10G). I've tried running fsck.ext2 -b 8913 /dev/hda7 but it still complains that it can't find the superblock and makes ominous suggestions that the partition might be corrupt. I have been running badblocks /dev/hda7 for the past hour or so but nothing salient seems to be reported. My plan was to image the partition and mount on another machine to recover the database but this now seems hopeful. Do the sys admin guru's out there have any suggestions? Thanks Chris

Whilst I do have a gui manager for networking it is not like the one shown in the link. One clicks on the name of the network shown and a drop down with any other access is shown. I _think_ the the key is WEP simply one word <ultra> I will I try the command line. should that fail I guess I need to install network manager,hopefully I can get it through apt. I did not do this before as I thought it may cause a conflict with the ndis wrapper. This is the output from: iwlist eth1 scanning ESSID "martin" Protocol IEEE 802.11g Frequency: 2.412ghz Channel 1 Quality: 0/100 Signal level 64dbm: 256dbm Encryption key: on Bit rates 1-2-5.5-11.6-9-12-24-36-48-54MBS Extra:bin_int=100 Extra:ati=0 I have never had a problem with open access points so I wonder if I am incorrectly entering the key somehow ( does it need to be entered twice with a space/dash?) The key is a simple 5 letter dictionary word so I assume that it would be ascii though I did try the hexadecimal entry also. I can ping the router under windows with round trips under 2ms When i ping with ubuntu I get network unreachable. Thanks for responses, I have a broadcom wireless in my note book and no wifi radar. Windows is reporting a constantly fluctuating signal on its gui giving a signal of 2 to three bars (5 is max) Ubuntu wireless network "sees" the connection but will not connect once I enter the wep key. My guess is that the signal is too week to connect with as I usually can connect with out any effort. wireless connection

My landlord has agreed to share his wireless connection (for a fee) with me and has provided me with the password. If I boot into windows, add the password it all works but with Ubuntu I cannot get a connection. so far I tried ascii and hexadecimal but no connection i have the networking set to dchp the router address is 192.168.1.254 do I need to turn off dchp and use a fixed address? Or is there some other thing I may have missed?

Thanks very much to David and Bruce for your replies. @ David: the modem is a Belkin ADSL2+ modem, which I believe is available only here in Australia. It was supplied to me by my ISP. (I took the path of least resistance on that!) @ Bruce: your reply prompted me to look at the fine manual that came with the modem. There's a section in it called "Setting MAC address filtering" which seems to allow me to do the sort of thing you're suggesting. I really should've looked there first, shouldn't I? How to mount a usb drive at boot time

Hi, I have a usb drive that I would like to use for automatic backup and I'd like for it to be mounted at boot time and treated the same as any other disk. I found these instructions which describe exactly what I want to do... <http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/10/07/suse-automatically-mount-usb-hard-dri…> However I'm running Ubuntu feisty and those instructions don't work properly for this distro. During boot the fsck stage fails because the disk isn't mounted yet (Well I think that's what's happening). After boot up manually running 'mount -a' mounts the drive as expected. Anyone know how to get this working? Or is there an alternative approach? I figure I could just run mount -a in rc.local but then how would the fsck get to run every nth mount? Changing addresses

My modem is plugged into an Ethernet switch. The Ethernet card in my computer and my printer are each plugged into the switch. My modem has the address internally of 10.1.1. My printer's usually 10.1.1.2. My computer's usually 10.1.1.3. However, recently on a number of occasions, I've discovered my printer or computer has a different address. No doubt, some command will tell me the current addresses of things plugged into the switch, but I don't know which. Could someone enlighten me as to the command? Also, is there some way to force my printer and computer to keep their usual addresses permanently? Otherwise, when I discover that my printer isn't working or that my firewall's blocking connections, I have to change the relevant settings temporarily to match the different numbers, which is annoying. Configuring monitor in Ubuntu

Folks, I'm working on Ubuntu 7.10 (beta) on a PC which I must say is quite nice and Dad is also working on Ubuntu 7.04 boxes and we have an issue with resolution. Our PCs seem to not pick up the capabilites of the monitor and lock down the modes you can choose from Preferences, Screen Resolution I can't find a graphical box to alter the monitor characteristics. I can either edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf or type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and it fixes the issue. Is there a nice graphical way I can do this so that I can tell others as this is not the easiest to tell other users... Ian, Following your comment on the wlug wiki at http://www.wlug.org.nz/SysFs, I was wondering if you had any more info on what sysfs is being replaced with, and what the motives were? I've looked at all the obvious places, but don't feel like trawling through lkml archives. That said, don't go and trawl through said archives yourself if you don't know. I'll go look later on.

Hi WLUG! :) I've been "lurking" on the list for a few weeks now, and figured it was about time I spoke up and introduced myself... My name is David Young. I'm a South African Linux Geek, and I run a small consulting company over here called "Funky Penguin". For the past three years, we've been assisting clients with Open Source systems, developments, and customizations. I've subscribed to this list because my wife and I are giving very serious consideration to immigrating to your fine country. (South Africa is not the safest place to start a family). I'd want to ply my trade as a consultant over there, while continuing to manage my fledgling company back in SA. I enjoy working with technology in general, specifically open-source software, and if you asked me to define my specialties, I'd have to say : mySQL / PHP development and customization ( http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=wp-phplist - although it's not my favorite pastime), network and open source systems setup, wireless hotspots (working on a pay-for-play model to resell your connection to your neighbors / customers), and (really esoteric) jabber logging ( http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=jabber+bandersnatch) The wife and I are coming over there for a month in August, to get a "feel" for the place, before making our final, life-altering decision. I'm hoping to make friends and contacts on this list, and to establish some "street cred". I go to this web page: http://www.buerofuerform.de/ I click on the word "lighting". I click on the word "flapflap". A series of images appears. I want to download one of them, but can't figure out how. Although the images appear to be individual ones, they aren't. They've got something to do with Flash, but I know nothing about that. NZOSS AGM This Sunday

June 24th will see the NZOSS elect a new President. The AGM will be held across the country with venues in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch connected by Internet Conference. Vik Olliver and Don Christie will be running for President. Both candidates are very well respected in the open source community. The AGM will be an opportunity not only to do the "business" of the NZOSS in terms of elections, but also to catch up with each other and get some energy going in each Region. Ideally we will finish the society business in about an hour. The Presidents Address will be delivered via YouTube - I will record it before the event and publish the link on the list. For those unable to make the event we will be on IRC. We will use IRC as the primary means of communication. We will also try to get more real time communication going, either voice or full video. I'm working on updating all the software and designing a better website at the moment, and I'd really appreciate someone helping me with the CD browser and testing everything on 'the target operating system' ..I _was_ going to let this project die quietly, but it seems it just won't go away :(
