Waikato Linux Users Group plan to hold a Software Freedom Day public event at the Galagher meeting rooms, Wintec Central Hamilton Campus on Saturday September 19th, 2009. Last year's event (held at Waikato University) was a great success and a lot of fun. This year we expect the event to be bigger, and even more fun! If you're contributing to Free software, providing support for Free software or doing something interesting using free software and you'd like to display what you're doing the general public, software Freedom Day is an ideal opportunity for this and we'd like you to be involved. Hi All, I did finally get this to work but sadly I needed to use alcohol 120 and dosbox in windows but it crashes a lot (I know, windows) when I try to save game and other functions I was unable to mount my drives in the Linux dosbox or wine. maybe someone can show me how at the next fixit meeting. There are lots of different files in each directory; I took some time to recap and I think I may have caused the problem. I downloaded something called: Noctropolis_English_Uncensored. The download contained: Noctropolis_English_Uncensored.ccd 2.7kb Noctropolis_English_Uncensored.img 602.2mb Noctropolis_English_Uncensored.sub 24.5mb Noctropolis-Manual.pdf unreadable with document viewer "unknown mime type" I copied them to a c/d found they were unreadable so saved them as an iso on my hard drive. I think this may have caused all the files to be appended... Does anyone have some suggestions as to what course of action I should follow? Hi All, I recently downloaded an iso of "noctropolis" an EA game from way back. I was having problems with trying to install under both wine and windows. Dialogue box opened then closed immediately. I then noticed that ALL the file extensions have the suffix ;1. eg install.exe;1 if I need to rename them all it will take forever. Can anyone suggest a sensible course of action please. Bootkit Bypasses TrueCrypt Encryption

Just came across this article on slashdot, about how a bootkit is used to bypass TrueCrypt's encryption in a rather elegant way: http://it.slashdot.org/story/09/08/01/2247225/Bootkit-Bypasses-TrueCrypt-En… At least, there is some form of protection possible, since anti-virus software fails completely at detecting the bootkit: "However, administrator privileges or physical access to a system are required for an infection. At present, only machines running the traditional BIOS are vulnerable. The attack is unsuccessful when the BIOS successor the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) is at work on the motherboard. The most effective protection appears to be encrypting the entire hard disk with software that is based on the Trusted Platform Module (TPM)." re-scoring music using Rosegarden

I want to re-score some music (on paper) from tenor clef to bass clef and would like to use Rosegarden on my Ubuntu box to do this. I have read the tutorial at www.rosegardenmusic.com but I am still finding it hard to work out the basics of writing the music on-screen. Are there any local users of Rosegarden who could assist me? Fun with windows xp..............

Hi All, I am currently trying to recover three hundred media files from a windows system that keeps rebooting. With Puppy fire-hydrant the machine ran for a long time without error. I could access the windows drive and the files I wish to recover. The usb drive was mounted and had read write permissions. the problem was I could only copy ONE file at a time.. ON to Knoppix which also ran well, I could access the directories and bulk copy the files but could not mount the usb drive for some bizarre reason. Went to windows where everything I needed is available but it started rebooting as soon as it got warmed up.. My next course of action may be to remove the drive from the machine so that I can copy the info directly to another drive. However if some one knows a simple fix for the usb mount in Knoppix I would like to hear from you. Regards John
