Personalising Learning Environments with Quick Response (QR) Codes

Hi, There will be an interesting meeting next month presented by NZCS, Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7pm, 10th November. I originally approached Dr. John Clayton to give a talk to WLUG about the work he's done with Moodle in the past. I also asked if I could interview him for community radio, which we did last week. In the course of the interview, he told me his new work involves researching QR Codes in education, and we thought that might be an interesting topic for a presentation. Since we are having an AGM next month and it was too late to organize it this month, I pitched the talk over to David at NZCS and he's organized that now. We require a default forwarding of domain *(a)bugtest.abc.local mapped to email_id emailsuite(a)bugtest.abc.local - So from now on all the mails sent to any unknown address *(a)bugtest.abc.local will be sent to emailsuite(a)bugtest.abc.local 2. GUI frontend for pypdf

Hi there A couple of weeks ago, I needed to join two PDFs together into a single one on my Ubuntu box. Problem was, that I could only find command-line tools like pdftk to do the job, but no GUI frontend like pdftk_builder or guipdftk, which are only available for Windows. When I happened to come across the pypdf Python library (http://pybrary.net/pyPdf/) I told myself, maybe a little bit of Python-hacking could fill the void. Well, there you have it... pyPdf-GUI, a little pygtk and glade based Python frontend, released under the BSD license. And, since I thought this software might be useful to other people as well, you can find it here available for download: http://pypdfgui.fracpete.de/ On that (rather basic) website, you can download an Ubuntu 9.04 .deb package and a source archive (for other Linux flavors or older Ubuntu versions). wlug server status

To anyone using the WLUG server, Hoiho the blade hosting the home directory for user accounts, has a failing hard drive. Please don't keep any important data here, and if you do have something there now, this would be a good time to back it up. Today I was informed there is only about 600 MB of space left there. Most of the space is taken by some database backups, and I don't really see the point in removing them, when no one should be using this drive anyway. We have a replacement blade for hoiho installed which has a larger drive, but it's not plugged into the right port on the switch or something. Someone has to go to the datacenter to sort it out. Hopefully this month we will get someone up there, but we can't guarantee the drive won't fail before then. Just an FYI we are having an AGM 23rd Nov., and we will be proposing to add a sysadmin role in Rule 7 of the charter. Help with update manager please

Hi guys My update manager is stalled - every time I try to update I get 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/mirror.aarnet.edu.au_pub_ubuntu_archive_dists_jaunty_universe_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' Software Freedom Day roundup

My first impression was that SFD was a disaster (entirely my fault of course!) because quite a few things went wrong and we were fairly disorganized, but others have told me I'm just being a pessimist and looking back it actually seems to have been pretty successful. We gave away 130 OpenDisc-lite CDs on eday, and at least another 100 OpenDisk-plus DVDs on SFD (I'm not sure how many we started with but over 100 and we've got very few left), about 60 Ubuntu CDs, we've got 38 feedback forms, Liz's photos look great, still waiting for others to get photos uploaded, and the video looks pretty good too (yay kino and being able to adjust the gamma). So a big thanks and well done to everyone who came along (and if you didn't, how about getting involved next year?!)

Hey, Bruce and I are meeting at the hub tomorrow at 10 am to do the last minute scurrying about. We have this to do list: how many tables do we need? Get them network check projector and AV system for conference room coffee, etc print membership forms create/print eval/survey/prize entry forms (all one doc) round up some demo boxen ... other things we are forgetting? We have a really nice venue for Software Freedom Day this year, and we are trying to come up with ideas to best utilize it. So one of those ideas is to have a barcamp, where anyone can give a presentation on anything they are interested in. Software patents are patents that cover software ideas. Stallman will argue that they restrict the development of software to the point that the risk of legal action as a result of design decisions is dramatically raised. Stallman will also make the point that patents in other fields restrict factories, but in IT, software patents restrict every computer user and consumer. Stallman will also present some of the international research and economic data related to this issue. Light refreshments provided. About The Speaker Richard Stallman is a software developer and software freedom activist. In 1983 he announced the project to develop the GNU operating system, a Unix-like operating system meant to be entirely free software, and has been the project's leader ever since.
