Transformational ICT through Open Data Throughout Europe in the 18th Century the great Age of Enlightenment was born, a movement promoting the black arts of education, reason and logic in decision-making. In this entertaining and informative presentation popular ICT commentator and online strategist Paul Reynolds will shine light on the new Internet-driven "Age of Enlightenment" happening right now, and how individuals and organisations can cash in on the phenomena by building upon the growing wealth of publicly-available open data covering everything from map and geospatial information, through to the human genome itself. Grub boot problem, help please

Hi, I wonder if anybody could please advice me on a booting issue. I have double hard disk computer, which I was using with either Ubuntu or Windows depending on the need of the moment. I have been using the F10 option at start-up to select the Windows HD when needed. After upgrading to the latest version of Ubuntu, I cannot boot in Windows any more. While I was upgrading, "Grub" software opened options, and I most likely selected the wrong ones. Now when the computer boots, only does it in Ubuntu, even if I select Windows option. Even selecting the HD of Windows with the F10 option, still doesn't boot on Windows, it just get stopped on a black screen. Dell, ubuntu 10.4, Phillips 21"

Hi I am having trouble with a ubuntu 10.4 install, the problem is sometimes it detects the display, and changes to its native res (something like 2048x1560) however other times it doesn't and then default to 1024x768, this wouldn't be a problem if it just stuck with one all the time, but it seams to take liberties about when it chooses with res to go with, and as this is a pc for my parents, it is somewhat annoying, any ideas? One of the fixes I've found on the net is to edit the grub2 file which has a basic emacs editor they suggest we add a line acpi=off however I don't seem to be able to save it. What command should I use? cntrl + s doesn't seem to work Ron Dean

[OT] local support for small (Win) network

Apologies for this OT posting but I prefer and hope to find the right person or company through a local Linux user group rather searching through Yellow Pages or similar. I hope this is OK. We are a systems integrator in Tauranga. As much as we like to use Open Source (especially Linux based servers), real life means we often have to deal with the Windows world as well. For an existing customer from Tauranga, we will setup a new office in Hamilton, a small LAN with three Windows7 machines, a multifunction printer and one machine being the peer to peer server with a USB backup device. All pretty normal stuff. The only Open Source there, at least for the beginning will be OpenOffice, Thunderbird and Firefox. Ideally we are looking for a local company (or maybe single person) who wants to help us as their local support in case they need someone on-site. Under the Patents Act 1953 computer programs can be patented in New Zealand provided the produce a commercially useful effect. Open Source, or free, software has grown in popularity since the 1980s. Protecting software by patenting is inconsistent with the open source model, and its proponents oppose it. A number of submitters argued that there is no "inventive step" in software development, as 'new' software invariably builds on existing software. They felt that computer software should be excluded from patent protection as software patents can stifle innovation and competition. Batch renaming Photo's

Internet problems

Was installing Ubuntu 9.10 on some relatively old hardware (c2002-2004) at SeniorNet this afternoon and had an unusual problem. I could ping google.com but could not go to Google site on Firefox. I could bring the router/modem status up on the browser. That page has an automatic refresh, and I got the impression that the transmission speed was slow. There was a brief (at least 0.5sec?) blank screen between successive frames - something I don't recollect having seen happening before. Computer has been fine in the past - used to run Windows XP - and had beta Windows 7 running for several months (after upgrading RAM and optical drive). Double-checked by running Puppy 4.3 ... no problems at all with the Internet. Tried, I think (there's no guarantee that what you've done is what you think you have done!) putting ISP DNS server address directly in eth0 settings, but it didn't appear to make a difference. Tried both auto DHCP and manual settings. Has anyone experienced this before and know how to get around the problem? Is there a problem with the NZ Ubuntu server? Was testing on a spare computer yesterday and wanted to add some software. Seems the NZ server wasn't playing ball and I only succeeded after changing to the main server. My main system is set to the NZ server and I've not noticed any problems!! Finally, getting back to the computer I was dealing with today ... installing Windows 7 beta several months ago was an interesting exercise. The installer was quite happy with the LCD screen plugged in at the time, but Windows 7 itself refused to display on it. It wasn't until I substituted an ancient CRT monitor that I discovered that Windows 7 had installed successfully. Michael

Thanks for your link, Gregory. Turns out I didn't give enough information in my original post - and after thinking of the right terms, a Google search found the problem. I was affected by bug 477104, fix and cause here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/477104 in case it will help someone. I was running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 via Wubi (critical missing info in my original email). Wubi + kernel update = broken grub2 & left at bootloader. In the future, I'll need to follow any major updates by running sudo update-grub2. If this happens to anyone else, I fixed it by running: > set root=(hd0,1) > loopback loop0 /ubuntu/disks/root.disk > set root=(loop0) > linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-generic root=/dev/sda1 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro > initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-17-generic > boot Once Ubuntu booted successfully, I had to run sudo update-grub2 to prevent the issue from recurring at next boot. Obviously, the versioning will vary; I also had to rollback to the previous version of vmlinuz and initrd. I've seen comments that the first 2 lines aren't necessary, but I needed them on my system. Hi All, Due to some awful archiving. I have around 1500 digital still images that have been duplicated triplicated or more in a number of folders,C/D's and DVD's on a number of drives. I would like to know if there is a way I can dump ALL the directories into one folder then run a "find dupes" type program that would ensure that I did not delete any of my original photos. Hi, I am one of the members of Aucklug, and noticed the excellent wiki that the Waikato lug runs. Would you guys be open to us sharing the wiki, adding a few more pages that are Aucklug specific, linked from http://wiki.linux.net.nz/AuckLUG I don't see any point re-inventing the wheel, and the wiki already has many great references to things like Linux, NZLUG, etc. I want to put up a page for a start with some venue information on it, and a page for the next presentation where people can add ideas, RSVP, etc. Regards Glen Ogilvie

Brother printer stopped working

Hi, My Brother HL-2140 printer which has been working perfectly has suddenly stopped working. I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 on amd64 which I keep up to date and I guess it was due to a recent update, but I don't use it all that much so I don't know exactly when it got broken. The dog ate my bootloader!

Hi everyone, Well the subject line says it all... There was an update yesterday that came in for Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.10). Downloaded, installed, rebooted, and now I just get dumped into Grub. Immediately before the Grub screen comes up, it quickly flashes something that MAY be the words "Try hdd(0,0) NTFS". Then I get the sh:grub> prompt. OK So I don't know anything about Grub or what I'm doing in it. I've typed ls and I get: (loop0), (hd0), and (hd0,1). I tried boot /vmlinuz, and I get "Error: no loaded kernel"; tried linux /vmlinuz, and I get "Error: wrong magic number". Not sure what else I should try. Does anyone have any advice to get my netbook up and running again? I'm back to Windows 7 Starter! (argh, argh, argh) Thanks in advance! Cheers, - Eric

Linux Mint 8 (Helena) 32 bit tested

Hey guys. If anyone's interested, I've installed Linux Mint Helena (32 bit) on my Compaq Presario Notebook. Decided that, since my Gloria was getting a bit buggy in regards to updates and sound, it was time to take the plunge. Helena runs like a dream, drivers and wireless work fine with no fuss. They've improved the general aesthetics. Additionally, you can now do OEM installations. They've also improved the layout of many menu's. You can also choose to ignore certain updates. Be interesting to see what other goodies I discover over the next few weeks. If anyone wants the ISO, just give me a yell, at the next Fix-It day.
