Hi We are facing a strange problem from past few days. Below are the logs attached for ref. We are using nic bonding to our dell server. It has centos 5.4 installed with 4 nic cards. This machine was working good from past few months. But from previous 2-3 days it went out of network by itself. Hi Rod and WLUG fellows - I am a PCBSD (or FreeBSD) user and have attended couples of WLUG activities recently including Monday meetings, Saturday workshops, SFD2008(a)Waikato University, SFD2010(a)Central Plaza and eDay2010. I have for the last few years been using and contributing to FLOSS both on *BSD and Windows, and have also been spreading the word of FLOSS whenever there is "appropriate" chance. For a long time I have usually, if not always, felt that *BSD, Linux or even FLOSS is still giving the general public a wrong impression that these are for geeks but not for the them to use. One example is that all books regarding Linux are titled something like "Building a Linux server system", "Linux systems", "xxx Programming Language Bible" etc whereas undeniably these would scare most general users away. While more general books and online tutorials for general users are coming out nowadays, these are still far less than those technical stuff. Another example is that the term Linux refers not to a OS but to a kernel, whereas general users just don't realise the difference between them nor do they care what they exactly are; all they care is - how to use those common/useful software in their daily lives. This is what the public is interested in as well as in need of the most. Linux? System administrating? Programming? These are definitely useful for techies but sorry most people just don't intend to bother them. As a side note, in NZ there used to be a user group called NZFUG (New Zealand FreeBSD User Group) but apparently they have disbanded years ago, which I believe is due to fail to draw the public's interest mainly for the similar reason. Sadly enough, all official FreeBSD webpage/ftp mirror sites in NZ were also discontinued due to the lack of maintainers for ages. I see WLUG is unfortunately following the same path. WLUG has been holding several interesting talks in the meetings as well as valuable activities, I felt WLUG (and probably other FLOSS-related user groups too) needs to focus more on the general user base. An introduction to Inkscape given by Stephen last month is a good start. I think similar tutorials/seminars about other FLOSS e.g. GIMP, Scribus etc would be helpful for both the user group and the public. While technical skills is an important part of WLUG, I think expanding and promoting FLOSS to a wider audience urgently need to be prioritised - if the user group is still to be continued. I also think that the user group had better not claim something like FLOSS/Linux but instead use the term FOSS as this otherwise would give the public an impression that all these was only for Linux, whereas in fact FLOSS exist on *BSD, Windows and other platforms. That said, by using the term "FLOSS" instead of "FLOSS/Linux" it would be less likely to limit ourselves from the otherwise potential yet wide user base. I was even dreaming that, if I were to lead the WLUG, I would rename the user group to say WFUG (Waikato FLOSS User Group) and merge those FLOSS users at the Waikato or even in NZ from other platforms - regardless of *BSD, Linux, Mac or Windows. Perhaps it is only by combining these sparse forces that could increase the odds to sustain the FLOSS community at Waikato or in NZ in the long run. Regarding the finances, I felt some expenses had not been necessary nor worth the outcomes. Software Freedom Day this year was actually not really successful as people really do not want to be disturbed in the middle of their shopping by someone proposing FLOSS. As for the Internet usage/cost, I think Internet is also not necessary in the Saturday workshops as the workshop shouldn't be a free Internet cafe (another reason is that downloading in NZ is by nature not favourable due to the restriction in the monthly Internet usage policy in NZ). To help visitors install FLOSS/ISOs these could have been prepared on disks in advance rather than repeatedly downloaded during the workshop. Another thing I felt WLUG needs to improve is communication within the user group member as well as with the public. Take eDay2010 for example, some people was told by the user group that he would be assigned the time and tasks by email before eDay whereas ultimately he didn't get any contact from the user group. Communication within the user group needs to be organised and improved. As for the communication with the public, this has largely to do with advertisement. Not many people know about WLUG and the activities the user group has been holding. There are actually many low-cost or even free yet more effective ways to advertise WLUG activities... for instance Facebook, Tweet, or "chain-email" through friends of friends etc. Just my two cents. WLUG AGM ANNOUNCEMENT: Annual General Meeting, 22nd November In accordance with Rule 6 of the charter, I would like to announce to all members that the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated) will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 22 November, 2010, at 7pm, at the regular meeting location of Room MS4.G.02 (http://www.waikato.ac.nz/contacts/map?MS4) Several officers and committee members will be stepping down this year. Society membership has also gone down recently. Present and past members interested in seeing WLUG continue as an IncorporatedSociety are encouraged to attend this years AGM to meet quorum requirements and stand for election. Old computers and Eday

Hello all, I've got two Toshiba Satelite Laptops to give away, both very old. First laptop 8M of RAM. I can get Tom's Rescue Boot Floppy for work on it but haven't manage to get Basic Linux installed though its been a few years since my last attempt. Second laptop 32M of RAM. I can get Damn Small Linux to work on it using a CD drive. The screen is damaged on the right side - about an 8mm strip of black pixels. I also have a desktop computer case that formally housed a Pentium III motherboard circa 2001. You're also welcome to the motherboard but it no longer goes. I've also got some SCSI components and tape drives if anyone is interested. All these will end up at eDay for recycling if no one would like them. Please contact me off list if you're interested. Spontaneous suspend

Hi, I have a laptop running Kubuntu 8.04 and it has begun spontaneously going to sleep a short time after I log in. After resuming everything appears to work fine. If I don't log in then it will sit on the greeter screen without suspending. I suspect there is something in my .kde/ that is doing this. Anyone know what I should be looking for? sudo command not found

Hi Sudo has me boggled ..... I'm trying to configure a group %linuxadmins .. My account is a member of linuxadmins , when I sudo iptables -h I get "sudo: iptables: command not found". Let me know if you have had problem playing flash videos at all, I've had a fair few problems with it logging up. I have tried kde, gnome, kdm, gdm, straight X windows without anything, Brand new login with fresh profile etc and still getting the bug. Chrome has its own flash plugin which still has the problem, firefox with standard plugin also has the same bug. basically after about 2 mins it locks up, the active window is still usable (ie a konsole) , and mouse moves but can't click. I can use the keyboard to type but not to navigate alt+tab to other windows etc. I can get to tty1 and back no problems but again not change windows in the window manager. If anyone has got a similar problem, or a fix, let me know. Upgrading to Maverick...

As far as I can tell, Maverick seems to work just fine. However, I haven't installed it yet. Has anyone here got a dual-boot system with Windows 7? I've read about this bug where grub2's bootloader is overwritten after running Windows, and I don't know if it applies to this distribution as well -- I'm rather wary of upgrading (a clean install in this case, as I'm skipping Lucid) as a result. I would like to upgrade, as it finally fixes the inability of my laptop to mute the internal speakers when headphones are plugged in (that's really the major reason why I want to upgrade; the other one is that Karmic's running rather slowly after a year). Remote adminstration

Hello all, Is there a tool in ubuntu that a user can start that reports the real world ip address and configures a home router to open a port to allow remote administration? I have a friend or two for whom it would nice to get them to start a program, report to me the details via MSN or Skype or telephone etc and allow me to log in and fix or make a configuration change to their machine. I know how to set things up using ssh etc but that relies on some initial configuration at the their end. KDE has a nice VNC invite function but it won't do the router config part. It appears the likes of KTorrent and Azuereus have the ability to do some to the router via UPnP to open ports up on the router dynamically so I am guessing all this is possible. Cheers

Using a laptop as an access point

Hi all, Does anyone know if there is an easy way to configure a wireless card as an access point in Kubuntu 8.04? (I don't really want to go through the carnage of an upgrade at this stage) I found these instructions: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?action=printpage;topic=3096387.0 but they involve a lot of manual settings. I think I read somewhere on my searches that the in recent versions of Ubuntu you can do this by selecting an option in Network Manager. Ideally something like that is what I am looking for. I think the user group could have made use of many other resources such as Facebook or Tweet etc. I have circulated an event advertisement (see below) to my department in university and friends (some of which is working at HCC). Let's see how many of them will show up. ========= Advert from here ============ This Saturday sees Hamilton's very own Software Freedom Day (SFD) event. An annual worldwide event since 2004, SFD is designed to be both a celebration of free software's successes and a public education effort to help further its acceptance. It has a fairly impressive sponsor and partner list, including Google, Canonical, Sun, the FSF, and more Organised by the Waikato Linux User Group (WLUG), the open day will feature volunteers showing visitors the extent of open source software and its capabilities. Internationally, the goal of Software Freedom Day is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality Free and Open Source Software (FOSS / FLOSS) in education, in government, at home, and in business. In Hamilton this event was once held at Waikato University in 2008, and this year we will be at Centreplace near Whitcouls all this Saturday from 9am to 5pm. We will have a couple tables w/ 4-5 workstations setup running all the popular programs including GIMP/Inkscape. We will have a new “Kiaora DVD 10.09” which we will be giving out (a collection of Free software for Windows similar to The OpenDisc). We will also have some Ubuntu cds and some WLUG brochures. We may possibly have some demonstrations about how general public can make use of FLOSS in their daily life. Software Freedom Day 2010... advertisement?

Now that it's 2 days left to Software Freedom Day 2010, are there any flyer from the user group to provide so that I could inform my friends of SFD? (Am I wrong or there just isn't any advertisement regarding SFD in Hamilton city or even in the university? Even I am not quite sure what exactly will be happening through that day...) Regards, Sam

Cairo cross compile

http://peppermintos.com/ It has some lineage with Linux Mint http://linuxmint.com/ Peppermint is linux distro aimed at those users who like to use web apps and 'the cloud' for more of their computing needs. I've had a little play with it in a virtual machine and it boots pretty fast. Those with netbooks might like it Chris.

Cairo cross compile

Hi All, I am trying to cross compile GTK+ in hawkboard (www.hawkboard.org) I have already cross compiled the following successfully for hawkboard: atk fontconfig freetype glib libxml2 pixman Now when I try to cross compile cairo, configure gives the following error: configure: error: Cairo requires at least one font backend. Perhaps we can arrange a computer or two to demonstrate (or even tutor) how general public can make use of FLOSS in their daily life/work? For instance, use the GIMP or Inkscape to draw some pictures/icons and edit their photographs (somewhat like street performance so as to attract people to come over SFD).
