Volunteers who can repackage software with nullsoft or similar tools, track down or redraw SVG versions of icons, and take interesting screenshots would be greatly appreciated. Using a laptop as an access point

Hi all, Does anyone know if there is an easy way to configure a wireless card as an access point in Kubuntu 8.04? (I don't really want to go through the carnage of an upgrade at this stage) I found these instructions: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?action=printpage;topic=3096387.0 but they involve a lot of manual settings. I think I read somewhere on my searches that the in recent versions of Ubuntu you can do this by selecting an option in Network Manager. Ideally something like that is what I am looking for. I think the user group could have made use of many other resources such as Facebook or Tweet etc. I have circulated an event advertisement (see below) to my department in university and friends (some of which is working at HCC). Let's see how many of them will show up. ========= Advert from here ============ This Saturday sees Hamilton's very own Software Freedom Day (SFD) event. An annual worldwide event since 2004, SFD is designed to be both a celebration of free software's successes and a public education effort to help further its acceptance. It has a fairly impressive sponsor and partner list, including Google, Canonical, Sun, the FSF, and more Organised by the Waikato Linux User Group (WLUG), the open day will feature volunteers showing visitors the extent of open source software and its capabilities. Internationally, the goal of Software Freedom Day is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality Free and Open Source Software (FOSS / FLOSS) in education, in government, at home, and in business. In Hamilton this event was once held at Waikato University in 2008, and this year we will be at Centreplace near Whitcouls all this Saturday from 9am to 5pm. We will have a couple tables w/ 4-5 workstations setup running all the popular programs including GIMP/Inkscape. We will have a new “Kiaora DVD 10.09” which we will be giving out (a collection of Free software for Windows similar to The OpenDisc). We will also have some Ubuntu cds and some WLUG brochures. We may possibly have some demonstrations about how general public can make use of FLOSS in their daily life. Cairo cross compile

I've had a little play with it in a virtual machine and it boots pretty fast. Those with netbooks might like it Chris.

Cairo cross compile

Perhaps we can arrange a computer or two to demonstrate (or even tutor) how general public can make use of FLOSS in their daily life/work? For instance, use the GIMP or Inkscape to draw some pictures/icons and edit their photographs (somewhat like street performance so as to attract people to come over SFD). KPPP and modems

http://linuxmint.com/ A little while ago, there was a bit of lament about the lack of dial up modem support for modern distros. I downloaded the latest iso for Linux Mint KDE edition a week or so and was suprised to find that it has KPPP installed by default. Just wondering if linuxmint might be a better option for those without ADSL access. To be fair, I didn't actually try the modem since I was just running the live CD of a USB stick. Cheers, Chris

OpenSUSE 11.3 DVDs

All Woohoo, The 200 openSUSE 11.3 DVDs I ordered in anticipation of SFD arrived yesterday. I'll be at the meeting on Mon night if anyone wants one. They're very cool, Dual sided, 64 bit one side and 32 bit the other. Two live environments, KDE and Gnome so people can check out each DE. wiki down

As you might have noticed the wiki has been down. The switch failed that we have at Orcon. No one really wants to manage the equipment at Orcon anymore anyway, and we have a VPS donated by Rimuhosting where some backups are stored. If anyone wants to work on restoring these backups just send me an email off list and I can get you the access you need. I'm on holiday right now, and don't have time to look at it. I installed the Postgres database server on the VPS but it's a newer version than what the wiki was using before, so there may be some issues with that. I'll be back in another week, and can look at it more then if needed. Best, John

Technology has always been used to respond in times of crisis, but in the last decade internet access has enabled new approaches to saving lives and reducing misery. Several organizations, including Google, are developing systems to help disaster responders and people affected by a disaster. Detailed aerial and satellite imagery is accelerating disaster response, and SMS and internet-based systems improve communication allowing victims of a disaster to request help. This talk will describe specific responses to disasters this year such as the earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and China, and man-made disasters like the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Craig received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waikato in 1996. He moved to the US and founded Google’s first remote engineering centre in New York. He led the development of 'Froogle', played a key role in developing Google Maps, and Google in Māori. He will be honoured this year by the University of Waikato with its Distinguished Alumni Award. Need to download my development evironment.

Hi I need to download my Endian Firewall development environment from my VPS in the US. I'm having platform issues with the cross compiling, so want to move it to my desktop thats running 32 bit Fedora. I'm in a rural area in Hamilton and having connectivity issues. Slingshot dialup not authenticating

Just been tearing my hair out with trying to set up a temporary system (using Suse!! - also Lighthouse Puppy) for a friend on dialup. Couldn't get wvdial to work, kppp was doing some strange things (including query modem not talking to the modem!). Eventually discovered minicom which enabled me to talk to the modem manually. Dialled Xtra ... fine and clear prompts coming back. Dialled slingshot ... couldn't make head or tail of what came back - reminded me of the results of mismatched send/receive speeds. Anyone got any clues. MS Windows connects fine, so that might be the only answer. Michael

Just got the word from the people at linmodems that dialup modems are not supported on 64 bit versions of linux. Thats not catastrophic, I can use my Windows laptop to connect to the net and internet share across my home network, until I can get ADSL. Now all I have to do is make my Linux system communicate with my windows laptop. I have manually configured my networking settings on my Linux system, and can ping both ways, but cant get internet sharing up and running. I think the problem is with settings on my windows laptop. WLUG Blade Server

There is a problem with the switch connected to the WLUG Blade server. We are not sure what the problem is, other than some IPs are not working. We possibly need a new switch. Does anyone have one? I'm able to schedule a call-out, if someone is able to go to the data center and replace the switch. A call out will cost us $50 for every 30 min. Is anyone able to help with this? Hi, We have another Kiwi PyCon lined up, and we're all expecting it to be as good as last year's event. This year it will be staged in lovely Paihia/Waitangi in the sunny Bay of Islands. New DVD drive unusable in Lucid...

I got hold of an old computer, and managed to put Lucid on it. At the time, it had an old CD-RW drive in it. Now it's got a brand new DVD +/- RW drive, and Lucid can show me that it exists, but it can't mount any discs. In XFCE, it shows the error 'Method "Mount" with signature "ssas" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist'. The problem is pretty much as described on this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1509538. I would have installed Windows, but I didn't have any working Windows XP discs (or a valid key), and even installing Lucid was rather hit and miss. I can't reinstall Lucid to see if that fixes the problem as I'm not at home, and I didn't bring my Lucid disc (or if I did, it's corrupt). If anyone has idea of how to fix this problem (the computer's for my parents, aren't they're not exactly computer savvy, even with Windows XP), I would very much appreciate a solution. If worst comes to worst, would a complete reinstall work (even if I have to download the ISO again, although I'm not sure I have access to a spare CD). I have until Saturday, which is when I have to go home. Sandy (rather desperate)

Xubuntu disc...

Would anyone here have an Xubuntu disc I could borrow? Preferably a text-mode install, I think. I've just got hold of an old Dell Latitude with a 600MHz Celeron and 128MB RAM (4MB given to video), and I can't put anything on it except Puppy Linux (which I don't much like) and Damn Small Linux (which can't properly deal with the USB flash drives I tried with it). This is not one to be missed! The Latest in Digital Forensics and e-Crime Digital Forensics and e-Crime is a rapidly developing and cutting edge discipline of ICT, contributing more and more significantly to crime investigations in New Zealand and globally every year. The NZ Police e-Crime Group is responsible for managing the digital forensics for the NZ Police via three e-Crime Labs throughout the country. In this presentation Maarten Kleintjes, head of the NZ Police National Electronic Crime Group, will give an update on the latest local and international work in digital forensics and e-Crime including recent examples of high profile cases where digital forensics played a key part in cracking the case. As the devices on which people process and store information have become more sophisticated, more widespread and more interconnected, the role of the E-Crime Lab has grown considerably. These days there are very few crimes committed that don’t have an electronic component to evidence and the number of exhibits have increased from around 40 a year in 1985 to over 16,000 in recent years. This ranges from people using their computer to research how to commit a crime (or ironically how to get away with it!), or emails or text messages which often unknowingly give the game away, through to more complicated analysis. Maarten will also outline EVE, the Environment for Virtualised Evidence, the world-leading system created by the NZ e-Crime Group and launched last year to revolutionalise the efficient and timely collection, indexing and analysis of electronic evidence. This system dramatically changed the turnaround of a Detective submitting a computer for analysis and access to files and information from many months or years to several days.
