Hello everyone, The WLUG committee are considering organising a Saturday Workshop at the Uni for October 1. Can we have a 'show of hands' on who is likely to turn up, please? We had a few problems with last month's workshop and it would be good to avoid that scenario again. On behalf of club, I would like to apologise to those members of this list who had travelled some distance for last month's particular workshop and found it not happening. As club president, I had made some assumptions about the attendance of others that often organise and champion the workshop day. Recognising that they could be a problem on the Saturday morning of the event, I made what I believed were sufficient arrangements with Univerisity security stafff and communicated this to the club member that believed would be attending. Unfortunately the communication was only one way and I had to leave Hamilton for a prior arrangment. Sorry for the mix up. Any type of "locked" electronic devices have proven to be less valuable than their "unlocked" counterparts. It is not in the interest of commodity hardware manufacturers to allow MS to essentially lock their devices. Sept 26th - No Monday night meeting

How Microsoft Can Lock Linux Off Windows 8 PCs

Just came across this gem here on slashdot: "Windows 8 PCs will use the next-generation booting specification known as Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). In fact, Windows 8 logo devices will be required to use the secure boot portion of the new spec. Secure UEFI is intended to thwart rootkit infections by using PKI authentication before allowing executables or drivers to be loaded onto the device. Or is this an opportunity to get lower prices on computers if they come with Linux pre-installed (no key necessary, no OEM fee)? GNOME Workspace issue

I've suddenly noticed that I'm unable to switch between workspaces. Neither clicking on the workspace applet nor Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right arrow work any more, and I'm at a loss as to why this might be. I can still send windows to another workspace, but I can no longer get to them. Would anyone have any ideas about why this is happening? This is 11.04 x64.

Laptops/PC's for Demo/Testing of Instant Infrastructure

As part of the :ii project, it would be interested to try installing on various laptops and desktops that I wouldn't normally have access to. At this point it will format whatever is on the hard drive and install Linux or Windows with a predetermined configuration and software set. Hi everyone Just a quick announcement regarding the "Gimp for photo restoration and touch-up" presentation that Jody, my wife, will be giving at Software Freedom Day this Saturday. Feel free to bring photos that need restoring or touching up. If you don't have digital versions of the photos, that doesn't matter as we can scan them at the event. Of course, she'll only be able to work on a limited number of photos during the presentation and throughout the day, so please don't feel left out if your photo can't be looked at. However, looking over her shoulder and talking to her should give you a good idea on how to enhance the photos yourself. Hi Chris, I've added you for the 2:30 time slot. You are also welcome to come and setup in the foyer area and demo/talk about your project. If other people are interested in setting up and showing of whatever cool interesting project or application they are currently working on/interested in etc... just let us know. For instance there was a great demo on FOSS musical applications last time we held SFD at the uni. If someone wants to do something like that again, we'd love to see it. I will have a small display w/ a midi-controller and LMMS ready, but I can't remember who it was who demonstrated Arduor and some other music apps last time. A couple of guys from Tauranga want to introduce the local community to a project call instant infrastructure <http://ii.code.org.nz>. We are presenting at SFD in Tauranga Sunday! We want to enable non-technical people to install operating systems and applications (in possibly complex and interdependent configurations) to computers that have blank or format-able hard drives. The computers may be configured to be centrally managed over the network for ongoing support and maintenance. This could happen from a smart phone or usb stick... On the technical side I've be trying to get Virtualbox booting the infrastructure from Ubuntu and after that it won't be long until it's selfhosted starting from Windows, OSX, or Linux. This would allow people from many different experience levels and backgrounds to participate in sharing solutions. WLUG now has Elgg (open source social networking)

Hello all WLUG list subscribers, Since Peter Reutemann's presentation on Elgg at our last Monday evening meeting, Peter, Ewen Cummings and John Billings have been working to establish Elgg on the wlug server. Elgg is open source social networking software and our case, is another avenue for WLUG club members to interact online. You can share photos, create discussion forums, write your own blog, link in your twitter feed, and follow discussions via RSS. There are many more plugins available and the site will continue to receive additional features. The existing wiki is not being superseded by this at all and will still be the place to document technical and linux related things. So it is my pleasure to extend this invitation to all members and list subscribers to check out Elgg, create yourself a profile, upload a photo of yourself and have a bit of play on the site - maybe even create a group for your own pet topics and invite others to join. http://elgg.wlug.org.nz/ The following site lists many of the plugins available to the site. Introductions and Instant Infrastructure

Hello Local Linux Community, I'm an opensource enthusiast who has recently moved to the area and looking to get a bit more connected. I'm currently working on an instant infrastructure project to assist small to medium offices (non-profits and education are my primary targets) setup a functioning centrally managed computing and network infrastructure. The initial code is up at github. https://github.com/passionengine/ii/wiki Long term we should be able to boot an entire infrastructure from a smartphone or simple network device and create usb boot sticks for anything that doesn't do pxe booting. It will take bare metal machines (no os, no virtualiziation) and build them up with Ubuntu, XP, and/or Vista configured with a chef-client to keep them maintained centrally via a chef based infrastructure. I'm hoping to pull a demo together by mid-september and present at Software Freedom Day weekend (Waikato on Saturday and St. Mary's on Sunday). I'd been keen to have coffee or chat with anyone interested in working with me on this project. Cheers, -chris

Software Freedom Day 2011

SFD 2011 is a little more than a month away, and I'm just wondering who all wants to be involved. It's on 17th September this year. We are planning to have it at Uni, at the very least we can use our regular meeting room, and have a really low key day, or in the past we held it in the S block building foyer, and used some of the lecture rooms to do presentations. I was over at the Uni today and talked to Sally Jo and she seemed to think that would be fine if we wanted to have it there again. The NZCS meeting today was about the Linux cluster there, and the presenter said he'd be keen to give a talk/demo the cluster at SFD. We will be putting up a display at the library first week of September, as all the boards were booked the second week, and distributing some flyers around. If anyone remembers what we did in 2007, I thought that went well, having some tables set up w/ different demos and information, and we ran presentations throughout the day. I'm good for one table, and one presentation on something (possibly 20 years of Linux?) So let me know who all wants to be involved and what you would like to do. Best, John

Upcoming NZCS event

Hi all, NZCS is running an event at the University next week entitled "High Performance Computing: Inside Waikato University's Symphony Cluster". It's going to be presented by Donald Neal, from the high-performance computing arm of The University of Waikato - he's the main man who keeps their Symphony cluster running. This is going to be a pretty cool presentation, and I thought it would fit with this group's interests well. Hi All. Just a quick note. Yesterday I bought the above (netbook/6-cell battery/ext. charger) from Noel Leeming at The Base in Hamilton for $379 ALL UP. They tried to push a $99 warranty (Consumer Guarantees Act does this so waste of $$), and MS Word/etc as well hehe. Cheapest I could find this on the ´Net was $430. Brief specs: Intel Atom N570 1.66GHz Dual-Core 1GB DDR3? RAM - Max 2GB. ~250GB SATA HDD NM10 Express Chipset Webcam Sound Bluetooth 802.11b/g/n Wireless Grabbed Kubuntu Netbook iso, created usb boot drive, blew away Win7 Starter, installed fine, sound and wireless appear to work out of the box (no drivers D/L´ed) - can see several other wireless APś in network scan so I´m guessing that means itś working. Bluetooth seems to be working (can see other devices). Not sure when sale ends, so if interested be in quick. Noel Leeming is very close to Dick Smith at The Base. hope this helps someone. Abstract: We begin with a brief historical background of monetary information technologies, digital currencies and p2p currency. Next is an introduction to the open source bitcoin protocol, block-chaining, the coin issuance algorithm, the recording and securing of transactions. After these preliminaries, the talk will be an open-floor format discussion with demonstrations. A short user-space demo of web wallet, bitcoin client and send/receive public key address usage will be given. Next we'll go "under the hood" and look at how the code and the network is functioning. Topics that can be covered include, but not limited to; location of significant files, configuration of the bitcoin.conf file, securing the private keys contained within wallet.dat file, running "bitcoind" on a linux machine with the command line query/response interface, building the code from source and alternate clients. Finally, we'll finish up with a demonstration of a 6 node GPU OpenCL GPGPU cluster, aka bitcoin "mining rig" in action.

Hey, You are basically running it already without a battery. Taking the battery out should not affect the operation of your laptop any further. Need to make custom film cables

Hiyas, I figure someone in Wlug might be able to point me in the direction of how to get this done (or have some nice fancy gear at work): I need a couple of board-to-board film cables printed; 1.5 mm spacing at one end (and thickened, to insert into a connector), and 2.625 mm spacing at the other (mated face-to-face with exposed traces at the end of a membrane circuit). Hand-painting the missing traces on the existing ones I've got just isn't cutting it, so I figure it's best to find someone who can screen-print this sort of thing. I have two different cable shapes, need three or four of each, and can provide PNG masks. Anyone able to help? ta, Bryce

Garage cleanout

Hi all I've got some boxes of old bits that I've hoarded over the years, that I now think I really need to get rid of. 2x HP Jetdirect EX Plus Printserver (10 Mbit RJ45 + BNC). No PSU for these, they'll need a 13C DC centre-positive psu. 3x 56k external modems. One is a 3com US Robotics, the other two are unbranded as far as I can tell. I may have a 4th modem somewhere as well, I can't recall right now There are two PSUs that probably go with these, one is a 12V 1A PSU, the other is a multi-voltage 3V-12V, 0.5A one. 2x speedtouch pro DSL routers, with PSUs. Both were working fine when I last used them, which was around 3 years ago. 1x Compaq Evo T20 thin-client + PSU, part # 238365-001. This is probably running WinNT embedded, but it can be reflashed to run linux. 300Mhz processor, 64MB flash, 128MB RAM (I think). I put some notes up at http://www.wlug.org.nz/CompaqEvoT20Notes about reflashing them, and I think I still have the CDs of tools that I used, which I'll put in with this. There's quite a few resources on the internet for reflashing these too, eg http://www.mowson.org/karl/evo_t20/ and http://open-evot20.sourceforge.net/wiki/ Industrial patch cables. 7 x 2m, RJ45 (8P8C) to XP85, and 2x2m XP85 to XP85. XP85 is basically a secure screw fitting around an RJ45/8P8C jack. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3Com_Audrey) This is a very early internet appliance (~2000), running QNX. It's missing a PSU, and I don't know what condition it's actually in as a result. New PSUs can be purchased from http://www.audreymadness.com/, (they're a fairly non-standard pinout and voltage supply). I also have some old Fibrechannel gear. One Emulex LP8000, which had current driver support (lpfc.ko) in debian lenny at least, and two Compaq Tachyon adapters, which show up on the bus, but don't seem to have active drivers since around 2.6.8. There's still 2.4 kernel support for them however. There's also a pair of Compaq Fibrechannel Hubs. Everything has optical modules, and there's a few fibre patches as well. A Sun Netra T100, missing disks and ram. The disks are standard SCSI SCA disks, but the RAM is harder to source - you need "Mezzanine modules", like these: http://www.memoryxsun.com/netrat1.html. I had actually ordered some for it at one point, but the seller managed to lose my order. Pretty sure this system also has a quad-port 10/100 NIC in it, but if you want the NIC, you take the whole lot. Finally, my old desktop. Athlon 1800+XP, 1GB of ram (I think), single SATA disk (80GB?), DVD writer. PSU was changed not long before I stopped using it. I can't recall what the graphics card in it is, but it's not super flash. Was working fine when I stopped using it. All the above is free to whoever wants them, you must pickup from Hillcrest area, or from the CBD during business hours. No guarantee that any of it works. If it doesn't go here, I'll either put it for $1 reserve on trademe or dump it.
