Encypting backup utility?

Does anyone know of a Linux backup utility that uses GPG to encypt individual files? I've recovered files from CRDOMs with bad bits recently, and didn't know it until I tried using them. Storing each file with a checksum would be the answer to that. Also, I'd like to be give backups to almost anyone willing to store them. Encrypting the backups would be the answer to that: "Please keep this somewhere cool and dry" is far less of an imposition than "Hide this forever. It has all my personal email on it". I think GPG encrypting individual files would provide both encryption and checksum. Is there anything wrong with that idea? And has anyone seen a tool to do this? Assuming you're running Red Hat or Mandrake, try poking around /etc/sysconfig/network. There's a ifcfg-eth0 file in there that will contain all the parameters for your networking, that is loaded at boot time. If you change it, you can reload networking with something like '/etc/init.d/networking restart' or 'service network restart' - have a look in the /etc/init.d dir, poke around, Google, see what you can find. Otherwise, you can 'manually' reconfigure an interface with ifconfig; # ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 You probably shouldn't, however, have this setup. If your ADSL router is a router, and connects into your switch, you only need one network card, which connects into the switch as well. After you get this configuration going, you can look at doing trickier stuff. You may want, for ease of configuration, to use two different subnets if you're going to have a "router->linux box" and a "linux box->windows" LAN. Hello! Anyone got advice on the best Linux pda? looked at the yoper .. but it has an internal battery and not that much support and looks a bit mechanically delicate ... zaureus looks nice but has many incantations .. iPAQ is another option .. but pricey ... I'm looking for best price performance .. any advice apreciated .. there seems to be endless choises Thanks Stephen

I have made some progress on this problem. I upgraded my Sun JVM from 1.3.1_08 to 1.4.2_01 and the problem has very significantly improved, not gone completely though. In due course I think I need to check out the number of objects created by my application as it may be excessive. Thanks again for all the help Roger

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Using the commands you gave me highlight that it is JBoss and the JVM that appear to be using up the resources. However, the "Too many open files" error has now transformed itself into a JVM crashing problem. I have had this problem off and on for a number of months, but it has now reached the point where I can't work around it. I am fairly convinced that it is a resource limitation problem somewhere, but I'm no expert in Linux and am running out of time. The server is on a small network, so I was wondering someone would be prepared to come around and look at it, for an appropriate fee, to see if there was any obvious (to them) problem. Cheers Roger

Help - Strangeness in a Redhat

Hey ppl, I have a couple of strange things happening on my system, if anyone has any ideas on what is cause them please let me know. First, I am running RH 9 on my workstation and have a RH 7.1 box running as a webserver. I mount /home via nfs from the RH 7 box to my workstation. I have noticed that write speeds to /home are very slow, with no obvious reason. If I copy a file from /tmp (local) to /home/raymond (remote) it takes forever, and there is next to no network usage or cpu load. Transfers in the opersite direction saturate the 10MBit connection. I am using the following options for mount: rsize=8192,wsize=8192,intr Any Ideas why writes would be so slow? I have ftp running on the RH 7 box and ftping the data to /home/raymond via ftp runs at fullspeed. Second issue is a also strange, once I reboot I am able to run up2date and any rpm command, so I can install packages but after a day or two for no reason these commands just stop. They hang on execution as if they are waiting for something. You can't stop them with CTRL-C either, you have to kill -9 the process. This means I have to reboot my machine if want to install a new package, which isn't as much of a problem now I have things installed but was initially a pain in the bu when I first built the machine. "Too many open files" error

I am running an application server on Red Hat 8.0 and every so often the machine generates an error message "Too many files open" and then locks up. I have to restart the machine from the console to rectify the situation. Can anyone please tell me if there is some configuration setting that I can change to increase the number of permitted files? Is there some command that allows me to monitor the number of open files in the system? Thanks in anticipation Roger

RimuHosting is a web hosting company that does Linux Virtual Private Server hosting. http://rimuhosting.com/ RimuHosting's web page says it is based in Hamilton, but that is all. There are no names are full addresses anywhere on web site. Googling, I found a number of message boards posts promoting rimuhosting.com by someone called "Peter B". I'd feel happier if I knew more about the business than that. Other than that, does it look like good thing? A friend and I plan to run a few low volume websites from something like this. Stable Versions of Linux for Applicaiton Servers

I am wanting to set up a production application server using JBoss (written in Java) and PostgreSQL (written in C I believe), so would be interested in opinions as to what the most reliable platform would be for this. Firstly, I am wondering what flavour of Linux is considered the most reliable and what version. I am currently using Red Hat 8.0. Secondly, I am would be interested if people have experience with different JVMs for such a application. Perhaps another way of asking the same question: Are there any platforms or combination of platforms that should be avoided. Cheers Roger

Hi everyone, Because I want to see a big "Happy Birthday to me" audience, based on current relevance and suggestions prior to the AGM we're cobbling together a great topic for the next meeting: "Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam E-Mail Filtering on Linux". Suggestions for what to talk about include: * server side filtering options (MailScanner, Amavis, ClamAV & SpamAssassin, probably presented in a "How To" format with Debian Woody, Exim and Courier IMAP) * client side filtering (how bayesian filtering works, Mozilla Mail's implementation, plugging SpamAssassin into Evolution or Kmail) Since I've been doing this at work lately, I don't mind presenting it (and might even drag Greig into it too), unless anyone else would specifically like to. Seeing there are a lot of new users in WLUG lately, and that it would seem a lot of you start with KDE on Mandrake; can you let me know what email client you use?
