The 5-letter (or less) .NET domain names are being used for the InterNAT field trials. nfsroot

Hi, I have managed to get my iMac to netboot the Linux kernel. The kernel seems to load fine, but stops with a kernel panic as it can't mount the root filesystem. I'm using the default 2.4 kernel from Debian 3.0. As per the instructions for yaboot (the Open Firmware boot loader that LinuxPPC uses), i set "root=/dev/nfs". Is this what i'm supposed to do to get / mounted via NFS? Is this a sign the kernel doesn't have nfsroot support? I found a web page that suggested i add "fsroot=$SERVER:/export/root", but that didn't help. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Jon

compiling 2.6.5 kernel from rh9 .. a better distro?

Recently downloaded the 2.6.5 kernel from kernel.org as a tgz source file .. and tried to install on rh9 .. but the new installation fails at boot. I am now thinking of converting to an alternative distro that will allow this easily .. I understand rh has a whole lot of distro specfic stuff which has to be organised .. Could someone advise me on either how to get it going using rh9 .. or which alternate distro would be best ..rh is the one I'm familiar with. Also ..can you install a new distro without a reformat of the disk .. to preserve all my personal files? Lastly, can anyone provide me with a copy of such a distro .. creating directories

I am trying to create a directory in my 'home' directory with my user login. However I can only create a directory as a root user and thus can't use it with my user login. I can use the 'gun' directory in 'home' with my user login. Any help would be appreciated. The group of the directory has read/execute access (No write access). Everyone else has read/execute access (No write access). Incidentally, root has full control of adelle, and if adelle is a user, tough, adelle ony is seen as Joe Public and has read execute access. Xandros 2.0

Hi, I have tried xandros for a couple weeks, it nice and easy to install/use. Well, just feel like Andreas, same Yoper but Canadian(i believed they from Canada, Andreas :) ) It recommended for newbies and windows mover as they X/team has tweaked some features to get their own filemanager and the software depository (called XandrosNetwork). Installed stuff outside that is just normal as install on other debian based distro or just configure/make/make install. Overall, easy to use but less "fun" of course. IMO, if yoper has the GUI installation (i havn't tried the 2.0 yet) than Yoper is a clear winner as newbies always scare of text thing thou :) Just a few comments, Nigel Ng. P.S: Do anyone know if Yoper has new zealand mirror for downloading ?

Performance bottle neck?

I am currently importing a lot of data into a Postgres Database. Initially things where quickish, but now it seems to be running very slowly. I put this down to index scans. The machine is a Dual P4 with 2 GB of ram and a Raid array (14 Fibre Channel Harddrives) Top is reporting the disk cache is 1.7 GB and system idle around 70%. The postgres backend is using 10% to 20% of one CPU. I don't know if the bottleneck is the Disk IO or Ram. What would people suggest I can look at to see what is holding up the process?

Yoper V2 is out

Hello fellow Linux enthusiasts Version 2 of Yoper (iso date 20040509) is now available on http://www.yoper.com. Main changes are: - RPM based - Apt-rpm support and repository available - More than 400 packages now available - Yoper is not commercial anymore - Installer allows a fully apt capable minimal install (around 300Mbyte) - The KDE experience has been extended by including Openoffice with full KDE look and Geramik as a GTK KDE theme - Synaptic is now the graphical package management system - 400 packages (including Gnome) are available via apt - Yoper is still i686 optimised and performance patches from Con Kolivas bring even greater speed Regards Andreas Girardet

Installfest aftermath

We've just finished tidying up after the installfest. I think we had about 30 registrants, but I'm sure more than that came throughout the day. I'm pretty sure we got linux onto a few peoples computers, and we solved a good number of problems. Let's hope we didn't create more than we solved :). Out of interest, I checked the usage graphs for the Internet link, and we peaked at 170 KB/sec at one point during the day. Next time I'd like to enforce use of a proxy server, as I'm sure most of that traffic was duplicated a few times. While I remember, I'd like to fire off a few points: * I think it was a great success. We had many new people turn up - some from as far away as Waihi at least - and it was a really great atmosphere. * Thanks to everyone who helped. The entire committee, Bruce, Alastair, Matthias, Lindsay, Alan, Shay, Shane and all the rest who helped people out during the day. Big ups :). * Thanks to Lindsay / University of Waikato ITS for supplying the Cisco Catalyst 5000 and 2926 switches. * Thanks to Phil / Open 2 View for providing the server. Thanks Carich for going into receivership and allowing Open 2 View to buy lots of your old computing equipment . * Thanks to Crawshaw School for the use of the Hall and facilities, and the use of the Internet connection. Thanks also to Satlan, Crawshaw's Internet provider. * Thanks to DSE for giving us some Mandrake 9.2 cds. We still have a handful of these left, so if anyone would like a copy of this, yell out, you can pick it up at the next meeting. * Thanks to IT Partners for providing "CD Duplication Facilities". And thanks again to everyone who turned up. We've learned a bit about running these, so hopefully next time things will run a bit smoother - we should have enough tables at least! Daniel

Installfest is this weekend

As you are all probably aware, the WLUG Installfest is happening this weekend, Saturday 8 May, at Crawshaw Primary School. Network profiles in Mandrake

Anyone know how to get network profiles working in Mandrake? The whole system seems to be badly broken, but then again I may have set it up wrong. What I want is to set up a home profile and a University profile on my laptop. Home needs a static ip and University needs dhcp. Actually home could use dhcp too but then if I boot when not connected to a network it takes forever to time out looking for the dhcp server. I have tried to set this up using netdrake (or whatever it's called) but the ip address settings ie static/dhcp etc seem to be independent of the profile, so there isn't really any point to using it. 'Automatic' kernel patching

Just saw an article about automatic kernel patching linked off rootprompt.org Ketchup is a script that intelligently downloads the right files for a kernel. EG, if you want to grab the latest kernel source, and you have nothing, it'll just grab the source. If you already have an earlier version, it'll grab the right patches to bring that version up to speed. Mysql support in apache /php

Hi Any experts on this out there? I have set up a mysql database running on a server. The database is loadable and can be interacted with via mysql client using a telnet session. A basic php script running on the httpd server <?php phpinfo() ?> returns a result suggesting mysql is supported ..under the dbx subheading of the return .. but if I run the "mysql_connect" command the web page shows a error saying that this function (mysql_connect()) is not supported .. I cannot work out why not. Secondly I would ideally have liked to create the database as non root .. but seem to only be allowed to do it as root. Other users can readily access it. The os is rh9. Oddly, setting this up locally on my laptop there is no problem in running mysql_connect despite the installation being essentially identical (although I did use mysql rpm binaries to set up mysql). Any thought appreciated Stephen :>)

Programming Courses ?

Having lasted 25 years as an electronic Tech, I am needing to expand to cope with the continued blurring of the line between when the electronics start and the Programming of PC's takes over. I already write assembler for microcontrollers (programming from 2K to 2 meg in assembler) and really should be using c for this, but have never took the time to learn it.I have however programed in both Portran (port-a Punch) and basic many years ago. Ancient history lesson ends I basically need to program PC's to set up/ colect data/ process data and probably via a graphical interface. so my question ... in 2 parts: 1. Is C still a viable language to learn to write programs for PC/MAC Ideally in Win MacOSX (cocoa looks nice) and Linux or should I be looking at C# / Mono / QT / ?? It seems that all later programming languages seem to be adding to C (extend .. embrace ??) so Would C be a good start place ? All opinions welcome.... and crystal ball gazing will be entertained. 2. Does anyone have experience with a good course / course provider that they would recommend to provide such training. I would prefer part time training, as my family like to eat, but this is flexible, as I can work nights/weekend is the course is not too long. Of course, then I could apply for the job that just hit my inbox too :-) Thanks in advance.

iptables question

This has more then likely been asked by a million people with a million different answers but here goes. I was wondering if it is possible for iptables to filter by a domain name? I would like to restrict port 80 connects to .nz domains only and all others are stealthed. The solution does not need to be very fast, handle more then one high level domain or any other ports and is not for commercial usage. Any solutions?

ms access 97 to apache/php/mysql

Is there an automated way to take an access 97 database and port it to mysql .. and convert the forms for php access using apche? (I have apache/php and mysqld operating on a networked server .. and am now trying to do the port) Thanks Stephen
