Samba (re Monday's meeting)

One thing I forgot to mention when Greig asked me to talk about Samba in general, is that I am completely and utterly sick of samba playing catchup. Samba will always chase behind Microsoft's implementation. If Samba ever fully catches up and can play the AD game perfectly, and has zero problems, MS only has to move to another structure. It's a futile game to play at. Current Samba implementations fall foul of many of the problems Greig talked about. It's almost the same, but it is subtly different in many ways, and this causes problems. There aren't really any decent unified configuration systems yet, so running an LDAP backed samba system which *works* is not a trivial task to set up. The entire domain model of samba is tedious to work with unless you're running MS gear. That said, it's the only option right now. There are ways around it which have been implemented on large university networks, however support is tedious. I'm looking at using a custom GINA (the login part of windows) which will auth via Kerberos or LDAP, and having an AFS based network (Andrew File System), a distributed file system). It's not all doom and gloom, I guess. I get fairly frustrated with the attitude that seems to dominate overall major linux development which says that we have to mimic Windows. GNOME and KDE have done this, Samba is perpetually doing this. If Linux actually *is* better than Windows, why do we have to mimic them? We could at least be mimicing Mac OS X. I'd like that. Daniel

We do not want to have to change "browser settings" on all of the client machines. I am unfamiliar with a transparent proxy versus other options but wonder if someone could help me out with doc? Finally, I may be missing something very easily, if so, please forgive my carelessness. Is there a simple procedure to follow so I install simply and than add complexity as I go? Tryed installing one app at a time starting w/ Squid then DG w/ plug-in, then IP tables but to no avail... I used the standard config files in many cases and will attach those files. The errors I receive are when setting my browser to "direct connection" are "ERROR Requested URL could not be retrieved" & "Access Denied". There have been times when Squid/DG & IPtables filtering seem to work, but would filter "all" sites most of the time. Most of the time when I enable the FW or IPtables it does not seem to work correctly. Meanwhile, I am trying a new distro - RH AS 2.1 server and will patch 2/ up2date. Trouble connecting linux to ValueNet

Hi, My Dad has asked me to help with a dialup connection problem to ValueNet. He has Mandrake 9.0 and it works fine when connecting to Xtra. connection. The ValueNet connection also works fine from a win95 PC. You see these guys working on Samba-TNG and X.org contributed greatly to the original products. I don't want to get into a discussion of what the different parties mean by "redistribute". Let's just look at it empirically: Java comes on every major Linix distribution disk apart from Debian. FreeBSD has negotiated a license with Sun that allows it to distribute Java from the FreeBSD site. NetBSD are doing something similar. Apple comes with Java. Clearly the problem is the Debian stance. Distributions can choose to be flexible. We all know of Linus's flexibility wrt to binary drivers "in" the kernel just as we know of RMS's opposite view. For Debian it is a religious question. Gotcha!

Not so long ago I decided to dabble my toes in the waters of Linux, to broaden my experience and see for myself if it can truly replace that "other" operating system. I purchased a new system with 2 disk drives and proceeded with some testing. Since I wasn't ready to break "the ties that bind", my plan was to install Linux on the slave drive and that other system on the master. Fedora Core 1 loaded nicely onto the slave drive. But ... on booting the system, "GRUB" would appear on the screen (no menu) and there it would stay. Fortunately I had created a boot floppy. Away I could go, having to boot from floppy. Just as well I had a floppy drive! That boot floppy was transferred to CD within a couple of days. The other operating system was loaded on to the master drive. No problems there, but it was interesting to note that many drivers had to loaded (with much rebooting of the system) before all the hardware was operational - whereas Linux coped "out of the box". Was surprised to find that my system drive was "G:" ... because of the Linux partitions set up earlier. Along comes Fedora Core 2. Great! The install went like a charm ... until the reboot. Of course, Grub still wouldn't load. The boot diskette (CD) for the 2.4 Kernel proved useless too! I've tried, without success to recreate the loader, even trying to put the loader on /hda. Even went to the extent of renaming some files in the boot partition on /hdb1 ... that caused the installer to think I needed a new loader (which is what I intended!), but when it came to the end of the installation it said the loader was up to date so it didn't need to replace it. "Help!" ... any suggestions please? Michael

I have a fully licensed version of this software, but disk 1 has been damaged, and I cannot install it. Microsoft will sell me replacement Media at $50NZ but before I fork out more money on this, I thought I'd ask if anyone has a set of this with CD 1 that I can get a Backup of to allow me to work past the damaged bit of the media on disk 1, and install the software on my new laptop. otherwise its more dollars for Microsoft NZ that I would rather spend elsewhere. I need this for a course. so any help will be appreciated. After that I can migrate to mono. Please reply to me off list as this really has nothing to do with Linux, but since we have so many smart programmers here, someone may be able to help me hang on to a few dollars. Sorry if this traffic is a annoyance, I won't ask here again. honest.

Wee problem with Samba

Hi. I'm having a wee problem with Samba. It's configured to be the Netbios Master Browser for my home network. It's working perfectly ..... except that the browse list only contains a single machine - the Samba machine. I can get to any other machine using it's netbios name - \\megans - and everything works fine. The logs all show that it's working alright - it wins all the browser elections and no errors show up. The only weird thing I've noticed is that in the "log.<machine name>" lanman.c is mentioned after a client connection is made (shouldn't come into things at all but I don't think it's any problem??). Otherwise, things look just peachy. I've tried all the usual stuff (smbstatus/smbclient/nbtstat .... created shares and they show up etc), google, docs from all over the place blah yadda etc. Not a damn thing :( Any ideas?? Traffic Monitoring

We got a small network which connects to the internet via a switch and an ADSL router. We have no access or control over the router (corporate office only). I need to monitor the traffic between the individual work stations and the router in a as simple way as possible. Any suggestions? Debian update not working

Hi, I'm running Debian/testing and I just tried to install a new package that had to update a lot of dependencies. Some of the downloads timed out, this is because they are outdated and no longer exist in the pool, so I need to do an apt-get update. This usually works out fine but right now apt-get update doesn't update the package files. I checked the packages it wants on the Debian website and they have been updated. Why would apt-get update have suddenly stopped working properly? Hi, Went ahead and got one of these ... and the ltmodem source which I'm trying to compile under 2.6 what do you list when you "lspci" the modem? I get an unrecognised pcTel device .. number 2179 .. I'll be in Hamilton 4th Sept. and could pick it up then or I could get a Hamilton friend pick it up beforehand if you wish .. how much do you want for it? Any suggestions for a replacement of my conexant hcf internal, modem which has stopped since I upgraded to fedora 2? The DS Intel Ham has a similar problem with the chip manufacturer having a proprietry component to the driver and not upgrading to the latest linux releases Thanks Stephen

HP-UX 11i expertise wanted

Hi UNIXers, I'm working on a port of a very large C++ project from Windows to Unix. The aim is to get the system running successfully under HP-UX 11i. The application is multithreaded and runs as a service under Windows and as a daemon under Unix. The application uses the 3rd party libraries boost, CenterPoint XML, OTL++ and libodbc++. It currently interacts with SQL Server and Oracle databases. I have to say that I'm definitively not a Unix person; my skills are in the Windows arena. Even so I have managed to convert the code successfully so that it runs fine under Linux RH8 and RH9 (compiled using GCC 3.2). However, I'm extremely frustrated to find that I have a major problem with the software under HP-UX: it seems to CORE dump after running for "some time" (typically 2 - 3hrs). I simply don't know enough about HP-UX and urgently need someone assist me. The skills that I'm seeking are: - HP9000/HP-UX 11i - C++ - STL, pthread (or even better boost::thread) - GCC and GDB One word of caution: the HP9000 machine I'm using for testing is located in the USA and Internet access is relatively slow. I have managed using an X-client, but response times make this a fairly impracticable option. I'd love to hear from anyone who might be interested. In this particular case, it all has to do with simple std::string manipulations which require resizing the strings internal buffer. However, the error can also occur at entirely different locations. Also, I'm really puzzled why I only see 11 frames on the stack for this thread. What the code actually does is call a method of class ExceptionContext to write a message to a log file (the method behaves basically like sprintf). Waikato 2020 Communications Trust

Matt Brown and I recently (4 June) had a meeting with Prof Ted Zorn, regarding the Waikato 2020 Communications Trust and the Waikato Linux Users Group. Prof Zorn is in the Department of Management Communication in the School of Management at Waiakto University. The 2020 Communications Trust is a charitible trust set up with the basic objective of promoting “… discussion and investigation of ideas, knowledge and technology in new media and computer networking". The full objectives can be found at http://www.2020.org.nz/trust/princip.htm. They are basically looking at improving community absorption of modern IT, and improving the general understanding of IT in the community. One of the projects the Waikato 2020 Communications Trust is working on at the moment is called the ‘Waikato Community Net’, or “WaiCN” for short. This is being modelled on fairly successfull project run by the Wellington 2020 Communications Trust, unsurprisingly called the ‘Wellington Community Net’ or WCN for short. (http://www.wcn.net.nz/) WaiCN will provide a portal for community sites, which perhaps wouldn’t otherwise be able to decently host websites. This will have a secondary effect of perhaps becoming a de facto standard for looking for community information in this region. WaiCN also aims to improve community groups’ education overall, and to integrate and coordinate other community-oriented ICT programs. (Most of that was lifted from the project outline.) Prof Zorn contacted the WLUG to see if we were interested in working together with W2020CT (I’ll start abbreviating things here) on this project, and in general. We seem to share some similar goals, although ours are primarily focussed around F/OSS software, and the W2020CT is at least nominally neutral on this issue. Matt, Prof Zorn and I had a nice chat over lunch, during which we discussed the objectives of both groups, and how well we’d been meeting them. We pressed the point that some of the ultimate goals of OSS are not ‘to beat Mickey$haft’, but to provide choice, and to provide open standards. As it happens, a ready example of where open standards should be adhered to was provided by Prof Zorn himself, as he emailed the project blurb for WaiCN out as a MS Word document. Prof Zorn seemed interested in possible collaboration between the two groups, and Matt and I came away with the same feeling. He is going to talk with the Trustees of the W2020CT, and at some point we’ll swap representatives for meetings and get a better idea of what each group is doing. I personally think this collaboration will be useful from a couple of viewpoints. W2020CT provides a good vehicle for neutral advocacy of choice, and of open standards. This doesn’t mean they’ll push linux everywhere, but it might mean they make people aware of the choice. Also, they are part of a much larger organisation than WLUG, with better access to resources. Some of the people in the W2020CT and the national 2020CT are in fairly “high” places in terms of local and national government. Whether that matters or not is yet to be seen, but it’s worth remembering that our Charter does include advocacy of F/OSS to government, commercial and industrial bodies, something which we’ve not really been addressing lately.
