The highlight (lowloght) was: ** Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched "gnucash" ** Then I tried Synaptic Package Manager (as Matt suggested) - Did not work at first, but tweaked it a bit and got it going. It took forever to download - I think my modem must be in v.34 Mode or something - will have to investigate. BTW GNUCash seems to suit our needs. Thanks again for all the help. Ivan

Stolen laptop

A few days ago my laptop was stolen from my van. I'm fairly sure that the people who stole it were on foot and live within a few blocks from here (around the Poutney Park area). They also stole a stack of DivX movie CDs, some tools, and varous other items. I'm expecting that they won't be able to sell it (my laptop has no keyboard) but they might be able to figure out how to swap the Linux drive for the Windows drive and play movies on it, and there's a slight chance that they will leave the Wifi card plugged in. SO if anyone's driving around this area with a laptop and netstumbler, please look out for the MAC address 00:04:e2:b5:51:0d. On getting and setting up Ubuntu (dual booted)

I'd like to try Gnome. (shush :-) Ubuntu seems to be the way to go given WLUG expertise and a read of the wiki. Do we have any more cd's to give away? Can I hopefully get the most recent version? How do I get hold of them? I'm on a blistering 33k[1] modem so the more stuff I can get on cd, the better. Current setup: Slackware dual booted with w2k on a single HD. Would like to replace w2k with Ubuntu. (Judith has her own box now!) Steps ----- 1. backup Slack 2. delete w2k partition with Linux fdisk 3. intall Ubuntu beside Slack I'm already familiar with lilo but if things will be smoother for dual Slackware/Ubuntu with grub (for whatever reason) I'm happy to switch. Advice, suggestions, warnings are appreciated. Does Ubuntu come with reiserfs? Thanks Sid [1] Until recently, I thought it was a 56k.

What does dmesg tell you? Has the kernel even loaded a module for the wireless card? You will probably need ndiswrapper and the *.inf *.sys files from the windows driver to make it work. When you say you cannot make connection can you give a few more details: - what wireless network card does this machine have? (You may need to look at manual to find out easily) - are you trying to use no security, WEP or WPA? (i.e. what are you trying to connect to) - does it work in Windows if you still have that on the machine? - can you give any error messages? Squid

Hi everyone I'm looking for opinions on Squid. If anyone runs it, or has run it, can they offer their views on it, and comment on any possible pitfalls? I'm wanting to install it on Hoary to act as a caching web proxy on a firewall box. I notice that Squid doesn't appear to be in the Universe or Multiverse repos for Hoary (unless I'm using aptitude completely wrong). I have no problems compiling from source; I'm lazy and like to install from binary where possible. Does anyone know of third party repos with Squid in them? Any decent third party repos would be handy actually. Failing that, does anyone know why Squid is not included in the Hoary repos? It seems fairly popular and I would have expected to see it there. The Waikato branch of the New Zealand Computer society have asked me to extend an invitation to WLUG members to attend a dinner and seminar on 30 June 2005, from 6pm to 10pm. The meeting is being held at the Okoroire Hotel (near Tirau), and consists of a gourmet three course dinner ($35.00 per head), and two speakers commencing at approximately 7:30pm. LAN mail server

I am looking for suggestions and maybe even links, on info on setting up a LAN mail server. It needs to collect ISP email and send email to an ISP. So, collect @orcon.net.nz email, store it in imap or what ever and send it back to orcon. No IP address or domain name, just ISP email. I am a complete email server nub, so any help would be great. ext3 is default. I would question the sanity of the person that leaves ext3 out of the kernel. Possible a corrupt partition table? That sounds a bit extreme!! What filesystem does ubuntu use by default? Sounds to me like someone released a new kernel without compiling in the appropriate FS support. My solution would be boot from the live CD, mount your root partition, copy over the live CD kernel and initrd.img, then edit grub or lilo to boot from that kernel. boot problems

Since installing the synaptic update last month I have not been able to boot to Ubuntu, (and I have been using Windows ever since) I get the following error on boot up kernel /boot/vmlinux-2.6.10-5-386 root=/dev/hda1 ro quiet splash Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition root (hd0,0) Filesystem type unknown, partition, typ 0x7 after this I can get to Grub and boot to WinXP only System is 2 HDD, 10GB has Ubuntu, 60GB has WinXP Had a look on Ubuntu forums, some people have reinstalled Ubuntu after booting from a bootable CD to get around this problem. Are there any other options? My experience level is not very high having just installed Ubuntu at the fest last month. Cheers Justin Hyde
