Hello all, I am trying to update my system and went to an internet cafe to use their network. However, they told me I need to add their ip address (Which they gave to me on a written note) I have never had to do this before and have no idea how to do it in Ubuntu. Fixit wish list

Hello all, I am back in the country breifly and intend taking my machine to the "fixit" meeting on Saturday with the hope of gaining more a more functional machine. The purpose of this email is to give some prior warning to anyone who may be going to help Acer 500x inspire laptop amd64 I have made some attempts to get help on irc but every time I get someone who seems to knowledge the sever reset or some other drama occured. Broadcom bcm43xx air force one Wlan SiS grapics VCL and Totem-xine dvd players Wish list: 1 Get the wlan up and operational.. Have tried a couple of things and am now stuck after blacklisting the bcm and not being able to reverse the command. 2 Would like some sort of graphics accelleration, the Sis card is not very linux freindly 3 Able to play dvd's I have done a number of installs plus added plugins but still no dvd playback Totem reports that I may not have "libreaddvdcss2" I did add this but unsure of if it is working as the update is highly experimental. 4 Some sort of emulator so that I can play around with some MS programs. If you feel you can help I would really appreciatte it. I am available off list if you like. Regards John

Folks, Here is an article on this: http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/07/17/1916214 It also talks a bit about ATA over Ethernet (AoE) which is a "cheap" way of doing SANs - cheap being a relative term. I myself would rather use iSCSI as it runs over IP (and therefore doesn't have to be on same segment). But AoE is still interesting as well. BIOS failure?

Hello, On wednesday night, I was happily using my computer and playing around with some wengophone software. At the end of the evening I shut my machine down. On Thurday lunch time, I went home for lunch and thought I'd fire up my machine to play with the wengophone software somemore. The Nvidia BIOS flashed on the screen and then nothing further came up on screen. I waited a while and still nothing more. I held in the Power button until the machine switched off and restarted it again. Same result except I noticed the harddrive light was fluttering away. So I switched it off and tried booting a knoppix CD. No result. So I disconnected the power supply to the second harddrive thinking maybe there was some argument between the harddrive and tried starting again. The first harddrive contains the master boot record. This time, still get the Nvidia BIOS notice but still doesn't boot but this time no harddrive light persistently fluttering. So, I am running out of options. Bascially, the computer doesn't seem to get to the BIOS screen but I am not sure what I can do about that. I had moved the computer or changed any of the power requirements. Is the motherboard stuffed? Is the BIOS stuffed? Any thoughts or recommendations etc. Chris

Jack is mentioned at: http://jackit.sourceforge.net/docs/faq.php http://jackaudio.org/ I've seen quite a bit of mention of Jack around the place (as well as GStreamer) and haven't noticed PulseAudio much at all. It seems clear that OSS is going away and what Craig says about ESD makes sense as well... Now Alsa is at the kernel level for devices and doesn't seem to face any real competition. How do the other bits fit togther though? router disconnecting

Hi people, okay I had a big crash and lost loads of data in windows plus system got trashed so decided to give ubuntu dapper a go on my laptop. no worries after much hacking away got everything working how I want it. now however there is a problem. I have a dlink dsl-302g modem. now whenever I run the laptop after a few minutes the router disconnects then reconnects and this happens again and again whenever the laptop is on. it doesn't happen with my windows machines and if I turn the laptop off the connection is constant for 24+ hours. I emailed the slingshot help desk and they say it's a line fault and it's going to cost $88 to have it looked at. but it only happens when the laptop is on the network. any ideas about whats happening here? I'm very happy with ubuntu, just frustrated with the disconnects. I have tried a second dsl-302g so it's not the router and the internal network works flawlessly just the internet connection is screwy. Cheers Haldor

Local Linux training

Hi all, My name is Eric, I've been following this list for about two years now but haven't had occasion to actually make a post until now... I've been looking for a training institute which offers a course towards the CompTIA Linux+ certificate. I was offered a scholarship in Auckland for such a course, but I'm really looking for somewhere in Hamilton. My experience with Linux is minimal - I've installed a few older versions of Mandrake in the past, and more recently got most of a server going with Ubuntu. But I still honestly don't really know what I'm doing, and most of the time I rely on programs which feature a GUI. I'd like to get away from that. I've called Hamilton Business School (http://www.hbsc.co.nz/index.asp?PageID=2145824273) who seem to be the only ones in Hamilton offering the course, but their Linux tutor has recently left the company and so they're not offering the course at the moment. Does anyone know of a Hamilton training provider where I could do something along the lines of a 20-week course via Student Loan? Thanks in advance, - Eric Light

Squid content admin tool

Folks, I'm just being lazy here and not looking it up myself. Can anyone tell me a good squid admin tool that allows to alter whitelisted and blacklisted URLs by user/group? I can just alter the config files I know but it'd be nice to have a web front end to it. Would be cool if it has reporting too but that's not a major. Thinking about it My command was probably trying to execute the file rather than open it and root did not have permission to execute it.
