First stable release of read/write NTFS driver

The NTFS-3G project has just released their first stable release: http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ This is a read/write NTFS driver for Linux (and other OSes). I've used this quite successfully during the beta so if you have old Windows data you want to access or you want to dual boot you might want to check it out. Woof won't work. Why?

I've plugged my modem and more than one computer into an Ethernet switch, so that any computer plugged into the switch can use my Internet connection. On a couple of occasions, I've wanted to transfer a file from one of the plugged-in computers to another (both using Linux) and have been able to do so via ssh. A few days ago, I learnt about Woof: http://enterprise.linux.com/print.pl?sid=07/02/07/2118208, and decided to try it instead of ssh. I followed the instructions in the document and got the transferor computer to announce that it was serving, on a specified URL, the file I wanted to transfer. However, when I tried to go to that URL using Opera on the transferee computer, all I got was the hour glass; nothing else happened. I then tried wget instead. Then, I got the output "connecting to" the specified URL, but again nothing else happened. I'm satisfied that the connection problem isn't a firewall one. The transferor computer uses Firestarter and it gives no indication that it's refusing the attempted connection from the transferee computer. I've just installed the OS on the transferee computer and haven't yet added a firewall. Opera and wget both work otherwise than when I try to connect to the transferor computer. What other reasons might there be for the transferee computer not to connect to the transferor one?

Saw at osnews today a reference to Zumastor which is at: http://zumastor.googlepages.com/ Zumastor is a community project started by Google members to bring enterprise storage features to Linux. Currently, we offer a ready-to-use network storage server with enterprise features such as online volume backup, multiple volume snapshots, remote volume replication, integration with Kerberized CITI NFS and Samba, all wrapped up with a nice, easy management interface. Problem with usb recognition

This afternoon my usb icons disappeared from my Desktop The lights are still on the devices. I can find no usb devices in /media. Is there a command I can run to check them. Read-write access to an ext3 partition

I want to be able to read-write to one of my ext3 partitions as an ordinary user as I can to the home partition and the FAT32 partitions. I am running Kubuntu Edgy which uses UUIDs in /etc/fstab which I haven't got the hang of yet (for everything except floppies and CDROMs). e.g. # /dev/hdd2 UUID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxx /media/hdd2 ext3 defaults 0 2 # /dev/hdd1 UUID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxx /media/hddboot ext3 defaults 0 2 and for the FAT32 partitions: # /dev/hdb1 UUID=xxxx-xxxx /media/win-c vfat defaults,utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 0 # /dev/hdb5 UUID=xxxx-xxxx /media/win-data vfat defaults,utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 0 # /dev/hda7 The umask option seems to be available only on FAT32 partitions and just adding user or users to the ext3 options doesn't do the trick. I have Googled and looked at the Edgy manual but can't find anything that quite explains how to do it in the approved way - not one that I can understand anyway. Can somebody point me to the right way of doing this? TIA Rod

It can be very interesting, challenging work. You get to play with _lots_ of servers, distros and get exposure, it seems, to any app that runs on Linux.
