Razor-Qt: A New Qt-Based Desktop Environment

Feel like a change of desktop? Just came across the following posting on phoronix: Razor-Qt is a new Qt-based desktop environment for Linux systems. The Razor-Qt desktop was just updated to version 0.4.0 after being in development for months. This release improves stability of the lightweight desktop, introduces several new components, offers new translations, a new theme, new panel plug-ins, and much more. The new Razor desktop components are azor-runner, razor-config, qtxdg, and Razor own menu. Razor-Qt is self-described as "an advanced, easy-to-use, and fast desktop environment based on Qt technologies. It has been tailored for users who value simplicity, speed, and intuitive interface. Unlike desktop environments, Razor-qt also works fine with weak machines." how to nfs export with file system acls

Hi. I have a "CentOS release 5.3 (Final)" server that I need to replace. I need to migrate this server to a newer platform. It is currently exporting a xfs file system with facl's , and these work well with both new and old client machines. I have tried to replicated this on Ubuntu and , discovered that I need nfs v3 and facls support compiled into the kernel, I believe that RHEL6 / CentOS 6 should have this support, but I'm still not seeing the correct results. The client doesn't have the facls , and when writing files over the export the default facls are not correctly propagated. What have I missed in the configuration ? Creating Your Own Distributable Ubuntu DVD

Just came across the following HOWTO: "This article is about how to create a DVD image of the Ubuntu distribution on your machine with the exact same software included on the disk. KDE 4.7.2 bug: entries added via kmenuedit don't show up in menu

Hi there Just came across an annoying bug in kmenuedit in 4.7.2, when adding custom launchers. After clicking "Save" the launchers don't show up in the menu. After some digging around I came across the following thread: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3118688.0 A quick fix, thanks to this thread, is to go into the following directory: $HOME/.local/share/applications And remove the following lines from the affected .desktop files: OnlyShowIn= Path[$e]= That will make the entries appear again in the menu (just log out and in again). Oneric Oncelot

Greetings all, I'm just writing to find out how people have gone with their Oneric Oncelot upgrade. I upgraded my laptop to the latest Ubuntu [1] or more correctly Kubuntu [2]. The three issues that I have encountered so far are: 1. the power management means the laptop no longer turns off via the normal interface. I have to use the power reset button to turn the laptop off 2. the second issue which has now resolved involved a number of attempts at migrating my mail across to the new akonandi set up. 3. the third issue I've encountered is that the laptop takes a very long time to get to a usable desktop after logging in via kdm Overall, kubuntu is getting more polished now at release 4.7.1. it will be interesting to see how the new database driven personal information manager (PIM) works. As a means of generating some discussion, I thought I would invite others to outline some of the issues they have had in upgrading. So, how has gone for you? We will be announcing an AGM shortly. This is to vote on the committee members for next year. John Billings will be stepping down as club treasurer since he is moving to Wellington. Prior to the AGM Ronnie will be taking over the role of treasurer. If you are interested in taking on a role within the committee please contact me in the coming weeks. If you feel someone would be good for the role, perhaps nudged them and see if they might be interested in standing. Finally, as club president I am inviting anyone interested in presenting a pet topic to contact me for our next wlug Monday meeting. The meeting is scheduled for October 31. Please contact me off list if you are interested. As an aside, I am writing this e-mail using DragonDictate. It is working pretty well. big problem with openoffice & libreoffice...

Cairo's been writing fanfiction lately, originally using openoffice .. and most of the time it works fine, but every now and then when she saves and exits she ends up with a zero-byte file. There's plenty of free disk space and I don't see anything in /var/log/messages indicating filesystem trouble, so I tried updating openoffice .. and a while later it happened again. The next time I switched to libreoffice, and set it to always make a backup. Today she's had the same problem again and lost about 40 pages of writing. There's still plenty of free disk space, nothing in /var/log/messages to indicate a filesystem problem, and NO backup. All I know is she's not accidentally highlighting and deleting everything because what gets saved is 0 bytes, NOT an empty document... I've already suggested (after the first time) that she needs to keep regular backups on google docs, or just write everything directly in google docs, but openoffice/libreoffice should NOT be this unreliable and I've never heard of anyone else having similar problems.. Any idea what might be going on here? other technical details; it's a fairly default and up to date install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with a default filesystem (I think that's ext4)

If you are considering installing Linux on a MS Windows, please have all your data backed up prior attempting any partitioning of your hard drives. WLUG will not be liable for any loss of data. Entry is free for visitors and club members. However, if you, as a visitor, wish to connect your computer to the internet for more than a few minutes, a fee of $4 dollars to cover internet costs would be appreciated. We will accept membership applications on the day ($20). There are no kitchen facilities within the room. Cafe's and toilets will be available around the campus.
