crossover office

Hello all, Thanks for your help with crossover office trial yesterday. It worked. Instead of CTrl Alt F3 I right clicked the desktop (as suggested) and chose terminal. I assume that Ctrl Alt F3 takes you right out of X windows and I also assume that SU means Super user and is the same as Logon / Root Excel now runs sweetly in gnome. I have to say Excel opens my pricebooks from suppliers far, far better than open office (which crashes or runs very slow on about half of the pricebooks) They are just too big or have too many bookmarks. Since the suppliers collectively send me a dozen or so spreadsheets a week, this is quite a big issue. Quatro Pro in Windows environment does a much better job of opening suppliers' pricebooks than open office or any of the Linux ones I have loaded on gnome or KDE. -- Cheers, Wayne D. Garton

Hi Wayne, As the previous two responses have hit on you need to have X windows running. However as far as I know you do not necessarily have to be root to install crossover office I have purchased the full version and it installed and ran from my user account without any problems whatsoever. So if you are just setting it up for personal use on your own workstation then don't bother with becoming root. The reason that I am suggesting that you do not become root is that when you use su (or similar) to become root much of your environment (particularly the DISPLAY variable which tells programs where to find Xwindows) is lost and could be what is causing your error below. Well, I have a BenQ/Acer (same thing) CDRW drive in my machine. Works fine. As far as Linux can tell it's just another generic IDE/ATAPI CD drive. I can't tell you how reliable they are though, since mine is somewhat old and doesn't get much of a work out (it's only a 24x speed). Well, up until now, I had been using Kingston RAM in Cisco devices, however, if the equipment is under warranty and/or under contract with Cisco directly, then there is a fundamental issue with using Kingston RAM which is not the case with using the RAM from these guys. These guys seem to be cheaper than purchasing Kingston RAM for Cisco devices from TP. That's also taking in account exchange rates, delivery, etc. Also with my experience with delivery, well, let's put it this way. If I were you, I'd start by reading http://www.wlug.org.nz/HowFirewallingWorks, I'd skim-read about how Perry's firewalling script works (at http://www.wlug.org.nz/PerrysFirewallingScript) and then I would install the .deb, which I'd find at http://www.wlug.org.nz/archive/debian/linuxserver-firewall_0.3_all.deb. (hint: wget the file, then dpkg -i) Then, you need to go into /etc/linuxserver-firewall/interfaces.d, check the mapping between interfaces and classes (which you learnt about in your skim-read), edit the files as required and type '/etc/init.d/linuxserver-firewall restart' And then you're done, and you did some good learning along the way too. ;) Future versions of the Debian package will do automatic guessing of interfaces and network addresses. Howdy. Thought I'd let people know I've found and awesome supplier of weird memory. I wanted to upgrade our HP 1300 from it's puny 16MB of ram to 80MB. Basically so large OpenOffice docs print without barfing half way through. Techpac are the suppliers of HP gear in NZ. Their prices for ram upgrades on printers are stupidly high. Well you can get 64MB upgrade for a 1300 from www.MemoryX.net for 30 USD + ~ 30 USD for FedEx express. It costs 10 times as much to buy the same ram from Techpac. The goods arrived within a week of ordering in perfect condition. For some reason when I type vcopsystems.com, my mozilla browser corrects my obvious mistake to www.vcopsystems.com and it fails, even when it folow the link it works in that i see the page, but the address bar shows the www, which is wrong, thus my cut and paste was wrong link, in short annoying, Galeon does the same, so its probably an error in the core, must be time to upgrade it. All the rest of my mozilla installs work fine. its just that machine, its also the first time I've noticed it. Can anyone give me any help, please. The so called "free" web hosting seem to have inappropriate advertising, this sometimes appears after you have set up your web pages. I would like some of my students to be able to publish their web pages on the net, but would like a simple way of uploading and editing their own work. I don't want to FTP in and I would like them to be able to do this from the class as well as home. Are there any scripts out there that could help me in setting this up. Sorry folks, I might not of made my self clear. I have web hosting and I can run scripts etc from there. I don't want to use FTP. I am teaching HTML to students. I want them to be able to upload, edit etc like Orion explains. I have tried Easy Host, works well but can not edit on line unless you purchase full version. Hi, Just thought I would mention that a handfull of linux users have started an IRC chat room for NZ linux users. It is called #nzlinux and it is on the freenode network. Many will be aware of such a channel by the same name on the undernet network. Well the new freenode room is a channel formed and being run by a different group of enthusiasts. Howdy I'm looking for a way of routing ports 7210, 7220, 7230, 7240, 7250, 7280 and 7285 from one IP to another using masquerading eg incoming traffic on 130.217.xxx.xx1 and outgoing on 130.217.xxx.xx2 UDP and TCP This is to solve a problem we're having with offsite connections to our new library system server Query 1)Are these ports routable in the linux kernel? Query 2) Can some give an example ipchains/iptables rules of how I might go about this? If this doesn't work, it either means that your ISP is brokenly firewalling ICMP, or that you haven't in fact connected. If this does work fine, then the problem is probably that your resolver isn't being set correctly when you log in as your user. If you could issue the following commands (while you are dialed in as your user) and give us the output it would be good ls -la /etc/resolv.conf cat /etc/resolv.conf

Red Hat 9

Red Hat 9 (shrike) was yesterday released to the FTP servers for Red Hat Network subscribers. Being that Linux users are an impatient lot, it was made available quickly through the new open source P2P system BitTorrent (see http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/) I have downloaded it and burnt it to 3 CDs. (No docs/SRPMs yet.) I've copied it for Greig McGill, and I'll give it to Matthias Dallmeier at lunchtime. Anyone who wants a copy _today_ is advised to hop onto #wlug on IRC and organise something with Matthias, who is looking after wider public distribution. Otherwise, posts to the list will probably quickly result in offers of copies. Next: Knoppix 3.2, which I haven't DLed because it changes almost daily! Side note: while some people may suggest that we should be supporting Red Hat Ltd. and not 'copying' the release that they have released earlier for paying customers, think of it this way: by downloading it P2P with BitTorrent, all the people who would have hammered the main site come a week from now will have just saved Red Hat Ltd. a lot of money in bandwidth charges. Side side note: BitTorrent wasn't nearly as fast a method for downloading as everyone made out on Slashdot!

I have got the above software running but only under root. I have changed the file permisions to user 9ron) for the software however it still will only run under root. Iam using Mandrake 9. I have not had problems with changing file permisssions for other software. The executable files are in my /home/ron/ directory. Any help would be much appreciated Ron Dean

Does anyone have advise or recommedations on a lpatop/notebook suitable for running linux? I have been looking at the Elite i-Buddie desknote pc ... a928,a929,a980 .. they come without a battery and use desktop components so are current hungry .. but price/performance seems v. impressive. The local agent seemed to only know about the a901 .. does anyone know a dealer doing the later models .. or could recommend a similar concept from another manufacturer .. or maybe just has some advise on conventional portables ... the choise is rather daunting Thanks Stephen g_and_s_pearce(a)xtra.co.nz

Printer drivers with samba

I know this can be done, however I cant for the life of me find the references I had before. Maybe I'm going blind. If anyone has any useful info on setting up printer drivers with samba (ie, so you can double click on a shared printer under windows, and it'll install the drivers for you), please let me know. There's a few points that have come up in the Netraverse discussion I'd like to add my 2c to. 1. Sponsorship. It's fair enough to assume that companies will want some 'return' on their sponsorship, from their logo printed on the T-shirts that they paid for through to a simple listing on our web site. If we were to accept Netraverse's offer, post to the list (one time) that they were sponsoring us - hell, this debate has done more to raise awareness of the existance of their company and their product than one post to the list ever would. Note that there is already a page at http://www.wlug.org.nz/WlugSponsors page, where we currently pay our dues to Computer Upgrades 2000 Ltd for buying our domain name for us. Net4U will be added to that page as soon as we get hold of Sahil and get Hoiho hosted (We've been trying, but he hasn't been available.) If we were to ad a small link, even perhaps a banner, to that page, then we'd be fulfilling our requirement to Netraverse and I don't really think I'd call it selling out. 2. There are people who use Linux for every explainable reason. Some use it because it is beer-free, and couldn't give a toss about the source code being available or that it's protected by the GPL (Free with a capital F). These people are no less worthy of supporting - some might not even know about the source code ideals because the mass media are really good at saying "Linux is free" and not explaining what that means. 3. Programmers have to eat just as much as expensive consultants do. It's considered OK for people to make money supporting Linux, and I think it should be just as welcomed that people make money writing Linux applications. How many Windows programmers do you think have "paid their dues to Microsoft" (for creating such a nice mishmash of cruddy abstractions and calling it an OS? :) While it's very nice to think that every application for Linux will be OSS and Free, that's not necessary. If Adobe ported Photoshop to Linux and charged for it, it would be worth paying for. There is no full OSS equivalent. Perhaps the action of this happening might even charge people to work on something like The GIMP until it _is_ a full OSS equivalent. People without too much knowledge or interest in computers want to be able to make a quick educated decision about what is good and what is not good, or have a trusted advisor make that decision for them. As Daniel was saying, Linux isn't the answer to every question. It might be one day, but even then, it might not be totally OSS. We shouldn't go burning potential bridges over ideoligical disagreements. While at this point there's only a 'free' copy of Win4Lin at stake, which seems like another VMWare, it's a decision that might pop up in future when it comes to sponsorship, and it's good that it's being discussed now. Free Software vs Open Source.

Someone posted to the list about the reason for the term Open Source. The term Open Source was coined by Eric S. Raymond. He founded the Open Source Initiative. (www.opensource.org) The reason he chose this term was because of his own perceived confusion with the word Free. He figured that if Free Software was to be promoted to the business community it needed a more business friendly name. He figured, rightly, that ,ost business people would associate free with dollars and not liberty. Hence the term Open Source. The Open Source Initiative promotes Open Source Software mostly because of pragmatic ideals. Eg, OSS is cheaper, higher quality, easier to adapt, etc etc. The Free Software Foundation however still uses the term Free (as in Liberty) Software. RMS founded the FSF and remains its most vocal and well known personality. The GNU System (GCC, Bash, binutils, fileutils, GNOME, etc etc) is all copyright the FSF. The FSF is a much more idealistic organisation. RMS often makes the distinction that Free Software and Open Source Software are different and that he does not endorse Open Source. This is true. Something can fall under the Open Source definition but not be 'Free Software'. Generally in the FSF's view only software covered by the GPL is really Free Software. Though there are probably some other licenses that are very similar to the GPL that could be classed as Free Software Licenses too. The Open Source Definition is more relaxed. Stuff with BSD and MIT licenses are Open Source but probably not 'Free Software' as the FSF would define it. Anyway to really educate yourself about the difference between OSS and FS you should read up about the topic on www.opensource.org and www.gnu.org. As an alternative to Wine you could try something like VMWare (or Plex86). I use VMWare a lot to run my accounting package. VMWare works ok on XTerms I believe. I've not tried plex86. Also, you might want to try Crossover Office (www.codeweavers.com) as it runs all of office 2000 pretty well so it might run the app in question. I use CodeWeavers other product (Crossover Plugin) to run Quicktime et al under Linux. I do this often on my machines as I have two with Asus P3V4X's that wont compile 2.4 kernels and so have to compile the kernel on another board then FTP it accross. I do: cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.19 make menuconfig make dep && make bzImage && make modules tar -czf ~/kernel.tar.gz * then I ssh into the destined machine, ftp the kernel.tar.gz over to my home directory then. cd /usr/src mkdir linux-2.4.19 tar -xzvf ~/kernel.tar.gz make modules-install && cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.19 then edit grub.conf or lilo.conf as usual and point it to the new fandangled kernel. Secure email transmission, GPG ?

O.k. I have a PHP based web-shop that as an order is entered emails me the credit card details in un-encrypted form. What I want to do is use gpg to encrypt these mails with a secret key so that only I can read them. I have very little knowledge of the workings of PGP/GPG but from perusing the man pages and README I have figured I can take the following approach: 1. An order is entered, PHP dumps data to a temp file 2. gpg is called to encrypt this. 3. encrypted file is sent to myself using unix mail command. Hard drive

I have a variety of PC bits floating around in my shed. I've got a dumb terminal or two, a couple of AT cases & PSUs with 486SX's and 30 pin RAM in them, a 120mb HDD in my drawer, and they're all taking up space that I'm going to need to free sometime soon. Free to a good home. Thank you to all those who offered suggestions on this subject. I have got permission from the local admin to use their SMTP server when not at home. When at home I can either use the ISP's server or set up my own. So all is now well. Now I just gotta figure out Mutt... looks good though. Paul.

Hmm, perhaps I should clarify this. Could still boot original install of Debian. cp /etc/* /mnt/hdb1/etc/ (with recursion option on -r or -R ...I forget) ^^^^win98 install with spare space. Re-install - everything on ext2 partitions. cp -f /mnt/hdb1/etc/* /etc/ problems begin... --- I have been thinking since my initial post. Another re-install will be the least troublesome way to remedy this. I was hoping to fix it the tricky way but that doesn't seem to have served well so far. :-) Oh well, a lesson learned. Fortunately I found a utility (now where did I put that...) to read ext2 partitions from windows so all that apt-get over modem is not wasted. You should be able to, although it might be a good idea to check out a Linux hardware compatability list (url, anyone?). Otherwise it could be that the X server is bombing out, in which case it should be leaving error messages for you. Hi Matt, You can do this with dpkg-scanpackages, and then you put a line like deb file:/path/to/.deb/files icantrememberwhatthisdoes/ in your /etc/apt/sources.list or something like that. Dynamic DNS Service

As some of you know, I am planning to start a Dynamic DNS service of my own, which will allow people to host real world (i.e. .co.nz) domains on their dynamic ip connections. This is not really aimed at dial-up users, but more at *cough* broadband 'always on' connections (i.e. JetStart). Most of the scripts are complete, and my tests so far have gone well. However, I would like to start a trial with a few people soon. Ok, I have a 128k and a 256k connection at my disposal, and a cd-writer. If anyone wants linux cd's (or any other LEGAL cd's) downloaded and burned off, I think a fair price would be $5/cd? Only posted there, as the mailer gave me an error when I sent this, and I wasn't sure it went out to the list, I still intend to figure this cron thing out, as well as logrotate......... We got a 13.5Km link up on wednesday, single TCP session throughput of ~2Mbit, with < 1% packet loss. SNR was 16/17dB each way. I must ALSO say, that in the last 2 hours we have confirmed a location for trialing this service. By the end of this month, we shall be there with a definate answer on the reliability and quality of these connections. We would welcome people to come along and take a look at it themselves, before they actually go ahead with it. Also, we would be MORE than happy to colocate a server of this list free of charge. Community Servers and Mirrors would be encouraged, as we will be having heaps of spare, national bandwith. International will be slightly tight on initially but, as it all grows we won't have problems. Quite honestly, at something like $100+GST p/mth the deal is very very good. You can get NFS to work if you have the right software. There is 3rd party stuff and MS stuff. Not that it comes with Win2k by default. The easiest way to do filesharing from a Linux/Unix box to Windows machines is via Samba. Why you'ld even consider NFS is beyond me. I've not used NFS from win32 - i considered using an NFS client under windows once, but definately not exporting from a windows box. So, unless I magically discover another day between sunday and monday, I cant help too much :/ The name mapping might be eaier to arrange, as there are plenty of equivalent services. Mainly aimed at mapping NTDOM names to unix names. Samba TNG has a winbind daemon which is supposed to do this, IIRC. hi everyone, I just tried to use a dual boot W2K installation via vmware from my SuSE 7.2 box. Problem: I do not have access to the dev (hde), and including me into user-group "disk" as advised by vmware does not work. Does someone know how I can set write access for that hd?? Which incidentally is how Windows does it as well. It is just a little harder to notice. :) Windows uses ASPI which is a SCSI API. The IDE devices have IDE->SCSI/ASPI support in their drivers. Exceed is excellent but _way_ expensive. Xwin32 (by Star...something) is good and cheaper. If you install cygwin and XFree86 on Win2k you get a "free" one and bash and lots of gnu tools to play with. Personally I think a 486 would be too slow to run the latest software out there well. X-Windows with KDE or Gnome would be a tad slow. Anyone else on the list like to offer what they think is the minimum spec for a decent linux system running desktop type software? What kind of system do you have currently, in terms of available hard drive space and RAM, etc? Regards Glenn. Unless you plan on installing from source, and studying it in detail, every time you install a program, you have to take a leap of faith regardless of your package management system. (olly, you may already know this, but its for the rest of the group as well, if they didn't know it ;) it already has lines like: optflags: i486 -O2 -march=i486 optflags: i586 -O2 -march=i586 optflags: i686 -O2 -march=i686 meaning it will compile for the correct architecture, if you set it up right. later on in the file is a section with a whole lot of 'buildarchtranslate' options, such as buildarchtranslate: i586: i386 changing this to read 'i586' means rpm builds i586 target rpms by default. alternatively you can pass the --target=i586 to have the same effect, i beleive. of course, stuff built for an i686 will have problems running on an i386, so be careful when building rpms for other computers! also.. re recent conversation on .rpmmacro entries... if you look in /usr/lib/rpm/macros it has all the macros you might want to set. Some are only useful in the spec file of an srpm, but a lot could be useful. You change the config to your desire - now everyone's config is like that -- and they can't change it. Some programs (such as minicom) are nice enough to warn you that they are doing this. Configure the OS for the systems and mass produce it. Doing all the builds from the ground up would be both time consuming and open to error should a step be forgotten. Preplanning the software would be important - like the comment made at the meeting regarding firewalls and sewing them up too tight to allow the user to install ICQ - preinstall ICQ, factor it into the firewalling and it's there if the user wants it. If they don't, they don't have to use it. In order to make Linux 100% interactive with Windows, you'd have to make Linux as brain damaged as Windows. WinE has made some good advances in getting some Windows-based software running. Documents and graphics files are generally no problem. Providing our Linux box has Arial and Times New Roman fonts (they have extended characters in them that do not display if viewed using some Type A fonts - makes the conversion of some Word docs to Star Office problematic) most Word docs can be converted into Star Office or Applixware Office. Graphic files - jpg, gif etc - can be read without problems. Even animated gifs can be read. There are plenty of Linux games out there, including a lot that are popular on Windows that have been ported across or a similar game has been written from scratch. As to accessing the disk - my standard for Linux installs is to add another mount point: /mnt/msfloppy - same as /mnt/floppy but the type is VFAT. This allows a disk formatted on a doze box to be read and any *legitimate* stuff copied onto the linux box. Most the "cool programs" in the public domain that don't have a Linux equivalent are pure fluff (such as exe files that give a short video clip of someone stripping/having sex etc). Those that aren't in the public domain aren't allowed to be copied - what's the problem? You can get mpegs with people stripping if you're into that sort of thing - and they run fine on Linux. (oops ;P) The great joy about Linux is that the stuff written for it is largely free to be distributed, tested and modified (with a few exceptions) being able to pirate copyrighted software on your Linux box seems to me to defeat the purpose. The idea I have is to enlist more people in the notion of having a great community where you're *allowed* to circulate stuff that people have freely given, not to promote stealing stuff that people have invested moiney in and expect a return from. Hackers and Warez-d00dz both agree that software should be free. The main difference is that hackers say "here's what I've created, take it, distribute it, if it suits you, use it, if you can improve it let me know. This is my gift." A warez-d00d says "here's something I stole from someone else, I don't think they deserve to get a return on their investment." I for one agree with the hacker outlook. Many hackers are paid to create programs for those companies that charge money for their software; what the hacker creates during *free time*, for the love of hacking, is what is given away. But to eat the hacker maybe works for Broderbund or Adobe. I do not begrudge those companies who invest money in their product making a fair return. Let those who wish to charge for their creations do so, let those who wish to give their creations away do so as well. Let's try this scenario: 1. "Hey, I got this cool new computer with Linux pre installed!" 2. "Sweet. Hey, heres this disk with a game/cool program on it" 1. "Erm.. I can't load it or use it sorry" 2. "That sucks dude. Get Windows, everyone I know uses Windows 1. "And look at how many people voted for [insert favourite political scapegoat]! Actually, I've already got a Linux version of that game and I'm not interested in stealing someone's stuff when I've got a whole community out there giving me cool stuff for free. You can spend the rest of your life worrying about whether you'll get busted, if you like, I don't have that worry. The Linux-based software I've looked at so far that is not freely distributable is extremely well priced. Compare Applixware Office - $220 - with M$ Oriface 2000 - $1080. Gee, I wonder which I'd rather buy... Photoshop - certainly worth stealing IMHO, but the GIMP is free, so why bothr? AutoCAD is bloody horrifically priced, the Linux equivalent is free. Is star office reader offline?? SO can do news and e-mail, S.O. will also allow the word doc to display in the e-mail panel which I find usefull, I get lots of e-mail in this format too, thus my reliance of SO for e-mail. (I'm possibly interested in about a tenth of what i'm sent so this saves time for me anyway) But as I am hidden from the real world by a proxy, I have no idea if it is off-line capable or not, I get newsgroups direct off my HDD. Sorry, But it would solve the e-mail query. Minutes of February Meeting.

Being our first meeting the agenda of the meeting was constrained to the goals of setting a plan for meetings. It was decided to : 1. Meet Monthly Monday evenings at 7pm 2. Alternate meetings between the BTM building (Presentations, and How-To sessions) and the Amateur radio clubrooms (Hands on and Technical sessions) 3. Try to take over the world, by encouraging others onto open source and linux use. The following Individuals either Volunteered, were guided, or just plain old got the hard word, to put together a presentation on the following topics The Linux Kernel: What it does, What can be done to it, How to Compile/Use your very own Kernel & OOPS - Thanks Raymond Text-Speech on linux. For the sake of the blissfully ignorant (and I hope there are some of you out there) "smart" quotes is M$'s option that automatically turns ' and " into "sixes" and "nines" or "sixty-sixes" and "ninety- nines" - depending on whether the apostrophe or double-quote appears to the right or left of a space. Dunno what character set they use, but it doesn't convert back across to ASCII char-set *even* when you tell Word to SaveAs "Text" (which loses all font formatting). Word-produced RTF files can't even be reliably imported into editors that use ASCII. Other "smart" punctuation includes en- and em-spaces, en- and em-dashes and other typographical marks. OK, It can be turned off, but any docs created while it was turned on need to have every single smart punctuation mark replaced before converting to Star Office files. (The only way I've discovered how to do this so far is to use global replace to first of all replace every " or ' or em-space with a character not used anywhere in the document (I used the tilde) then go back and replace all instances of that character with the correct one - assuming "smart punctuation" is turned off ther characters will be standard ASCII. You can't replace " with " in Word) So, regrettably, until I've edited every single document I have on my Windows box and scraped up enough for a real laser printer, I'm going to need to learn how to send my print output down the wire to a doze box to print. Can someone please tell me how I find out what libraries my system is using? I want to compile in the cinepak support for xanim and hav to which file I have to download. Im running a 486 with RH 5.2... I thought x86 Linux ELF maybe but theres also x86 Linux AOUT etc etc... Cheers Simon

First of all, redhat 6.0 ships with bind-8.2-6 do 'rpm -qa | grep bind' as root to see what bind rpms you have installed, if any you should have bind-8.2-6 bind-devel-8.2-6 bind-utils-8.2-6 or something very similar (ie, the revision number might have changed for your release of rh6.0) if you dont have these then install them.. I do urge you to go and read the documentation on www.isc.org, and the docs that come with the bind rpms. UNDERSTAND them... no point in doing things like this if you dont understand them.. Good luck. you shouldn't have many problems (unless i included some typos there), but if you do, read the docs, work it out, and then report back to the list telling us what went wrong and how you fixed it :) Daniel Lawson

I think that star office 5.0 is on the right track as it is fully cross compatable with M$ office and has versions in windoze, mac, .... ad infinitum, and of course Linux. With interfaces like KDE you can have a user interface that seems "normal" to an average user, as a result they can use it, then drop down to the "guts of the OS" to play with it later. Personally my approach at present is twofold, I am trying to get a stable reduced kernal size desktop enviroment, that will boot to a graphical desktop with my apps ......netscape, dial up PPP, Mail, Star Office .... etc and not carry too much "fat" ( so it loads quicker with out requiring huge memory) on it for a single desktop machine (the most common win95/98) system. While this seems crazy, it is a start point that gets a person using linux in some form. Later they can add the server/ network features if thy need them or want to play with them. ........... Oh no another dist .... AARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH ( Not really) Interesting that Caldera have moved a similar direction with col 2.2 ... Which I am planning to get installed this weekend to see how they have done ..... Sadly I think it will still be fairly bloated (Gut feel from reading the 151 problems I get from the caldera-users list) My other arrow is that I have been trying to push for a regular "Linux" ... not PC, or Mac, or ..... gathering where people can play with/learn about/obtain Linux in a form that is not too much like a meeting for software engineers. Sadly interest from the list has been very poor. Maybe once we are up an running I will be able to get some of you who know what you are doing to come and sort out our mess :-) Main problems to be solved . - Hardware support !!! The list on the Net are just too old, We need to know what new hardware works with linux, and what doesn't ... before we start installing this. Perhaps someone should start a local NZ database . ( Why are you all now looking at me that way ???????) Ok that is at least a start with my 2 cents worth .... I guess that shows how bad inflation really is . But I am a technician and a manager, not really a software person, so please consider that as you shoot me down in flames, ok ?
