New Users Redux

Over the last couple of days, due to some comments regarding the upcoming WLUG installfest [1] and "Software Freedom Day" [2], the issue of WLUG and new Linux users has come up again. While I realise that everything I'm going to say has been said before, hopefully any discussion that comes from this will explain a bit better about how some people feel, or get people inspired to do something about it. A lot of the people involved with the LUG are computing professionals, or higher level University students in computing science. It has been said that these people aren't new users, they don't have to do new things again and to keep them interested, we can't offer installation meetings every other month. It's not to say that these people don't want to help new people - lots of them, myself included, reply to posts here, sit in #wlug on IRC offering help. Yet people still don't think there's enough being done. There's a faction of Linux users that like Linux because they hate Microsoft. (Tip: if you use "M$", you're it!) Most of the aforementioned "clever" group, while they might prefer Linux for various reasons (open standards, open source, etc), don't hate Windows. There is a time and a place for everything. Pushing Linux before its time will just cause people to be aggrevated. As an example, if someone suggests running Linux to a home user, they will inevitably field a whole heap of the same questions over again; word documents, Flash. Questions that there exist easy answers for if people are prepared to look. (As an aside, people who deal with users every day who aren't prepared to learn for themselves, get a bit annoyed with that class of people!) Now, if you leave Linux to the people who find out about it themselves (or push it in a non-confrontational way; say "Linux exists, learn about if you want", and then help people when they have specific problems along the way, I think you end up with less problems. This is the approach that several people are espousing at the moment. Let people find Linux on their own merits - we don't have to replace every Windows machine in the world, and we certainly don't have to do it overnight. Then, if they have problems, we'll help them. That way we're sure that they are prepared to learn for themselves. No-one is paid to be involved with the LUG and some people put a lot of time in, only to be discouraged by the attitude of people who complain to other people, but not the LUG itself (so we have no idea how to change). We would love to see more new user based presentations. The general feeling that the people who have recently been new users should be presenting them. It's not tricky, and if you're worried about fielding questions you don't know the answers to, rest assured there will be someone in the audience who can help, or point to the wrong things. We don't want to alienate the people who have done this all before, because then at the current rate there will be no presentations at all. Not everyone in the LUG is interested in holding an "installfest", for the reasons above - Linux is not ready for everyone and we don't want to have to field questions from people who aren't ready to ask them yet. The people that are interested in helping, are. If you're interested, please shout out. Welly InstallFest a go go!

Fellow NZ_Luggites, Wellylug (http://www.wellylug.org.nz) is pleased to announce we are undergoing the annual ritual of the InstallFest. This year we have chosen MayDay (1st May) as the day that people can make the choice to add some freedom into their computing. We think MayDay is the ideal time to rescue your computer. Basically this email is to spread the good word. Anyone who needs a penguin injection is welcome to join us at Silicon Systems on the 1st. We're always keen for good volunteers, and I'm sure that the Aucklanders amongst us need a reasonable excuse to get out of the traffic jam ;-) Anyways - spread the word, and keep the heat turned up. Someone unkindly hoisted this on me to get going! It came with win95 on the disk and 2 pcmcia modems .. us botics xejm3336 and a 3com device .. Anyway .. I got the damn thing working under win 95 for internet stuff .. then he went and bought a usb printer for which there was no win95 driver Right I thought .. linux is the thing ...and installed rh9.0 .. wiping out the win 95 partition... well it seems to take all day to try loading open office (64 M of memory) ..to the point of being useless So I fell back to win 98 .. and have spent most of today trying to get this installed .. but the graphics drivers don't work .. the modem isn't properly recognised etc etc!!!! :<((((( Has anyone experience of linux on one of these brutes .. it has to read ms word docs ... do a bit of graphing for illustrations and work on the internet ... problem with FC1 installation

i have tried several times to install fodera core 1 on my laptop. i have 5G free disk space allocated for FC1 but once it's started copying files onto the disk a error msg pop up says 'a problem occured probably because you don't have enough disk space'. does anyone know what the problem is? regards beau

Microsoft still offer paid support for NT. Must of the current NT installs I have seen are acting as NAS, DNS and in a few file / print servers. It is installed on Compaq or HP server platforms. In the enterprise world, that is not a big deal at all, the ROI would have been well within 3 years. Normally, servers come with a 3 year warranty/service contract and in the enterprise environment in many instances the cost of having the server down for any length of time can outweigh the cost of the server itself, hence High Availability and Redundancy is a very important consideration. If the machine is out of warranty and/or is not on service contract, then in a lot of incidences, it shouldn't be in production. In other environments where things are not so crucial, I would expect a life of 5-7 years for a server. Quite often in the enterprise environment, 3-4 year old servers are used in test environments where if the server bellies up and/or spits out a hard drive, then so what ? So you'll be pleased to know that 3-4 year servers don't go straight in the bin.

Releases and thigns

Fedora Core 2 test 2 has been released; if you're interested in a copy a couple of local people have it. Post to the list, perhaps (I haven't got my copy just yet, so don't ask me direct). Warning, it's for testing, it breaks things [1] It's not for general home users. GNOME 2.6 has been released today; check out the release notes at http://www.gnome.org/start/2.6/notes/ or some screenshots at http://fgo-temp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/teams/marketing/en/2004/two-six-screens hots/html/ FC2 will have Gnome 2.6, but seeing as it came out a couple of days ago, it's only running 2.5rc. Fedora Core 2 comes with SELinux installed and enabled by default. SELinux is the NSA's patches for the Linux kernel to provide Mandatory Access Control - a way to, for example, lock your web server so it can't run anything outside of the commands apache uses and requires. There's a FAQ on it at http://www.crypt.gen.nz/selinux/faq.html, or a good general introduction can be found at http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=20372&group_id=21266. Craig [1] If you don't set SELinux up right, and FC2t2 is a test release, things don't run. You might not want it!

I have these books for loan to the wlug lib: Python In A Nutshell Alex Martelli (2003) - An excellent intro if you've had some previous experience with a programming language. You may not need another book. Sams Teach Yourself Perl in 24 hours Clinton Pierce (2nd Ed, 2002) - This gives a simple first look at Perl. You may not want another book ;-) Am happy to bring them to the next wlug meeting. -Sid. P.S. Are user contributions useful and encouraged or are publishers our main source.

Thank you for all the advise. Yes, you are correct about the ICU abbreviation ... there is some open source medical software, but it doesn't fit our requirements here. I will peruse some of the links you gave me and then get back to some of you. I have previously installed apache on another system, but then got lost setting up the local pages .. I thought I would do a staged implementation .. getting apache going then maybe pHp .. about which I know little .. and the MySQL .................. As a first q Can someone tell me where to put index.html once apche is installed .. so that it pops up when a remote system probes? ................... Upgrading from RH9 to Fedora Core 1.

I decided to upgrade from RH9 to FC1 on the weekend. Below is my experience which I thought I might share with the rest of the LUG. My system was quite heavily modified with Ximian and FreshRPMs packages for RH9. So I figured I couldn't just do a from CD "upgrade" install. The first thing I did was install yum a package manager similar to apt but for RPMs. Yum comes with FC1. I could have also installed apt for RPM too. But I was more familiar with yum. I then copied all the RPMs off the FC1 CDs I have onto my hard disk. I then downloaded the "headers" directory from the fedora core ftp server. Yum uses .hdr files to resolve dependencies. It uses headers rather than downloading the rpms because this is much more network efficient. I then configured yum to use file:/// urls to get the files off my hard disk. I then started going over my installed RPMs finding Ximain and FreshRPM versions and replacing them where Icould with FC1 versions using yum. This was an easy process of erasing the installed versions and then issuing "yum install package-name". Once I had eradicated these troublesome packages I replaced the firstboot, redhat-config-securitylevel, and lokkit packages as I read on the web they can cause install issues. Then I started manually replacing 'core' packages like glibc, basesystem, redora-release, rpm, popt etc etc. I should have also replaced libzlib, libbzip2 and others.... I learned that lesson later. :) Then issued a "yum update". This started inspecting all my packages and upgrading them. About half way though the update I had a thought, started doubting the command I had entered was doing the right thing and decided I'd stop yum with Ctrl-C, check the command and start yum again. BAD IDEA!!!! This had the effect of A) breaking yum so I couldn't use it anymore due to python errors and B) of completely hosing my RPM database. My system thought that it had installed multiple version of most of my packages. I spent the next 6 hours rebuilding my system with rpm manually. This consisted of producing a list of all installed RPMS (including dupes) and running rpm --force -Uvh on all these packages and resolving dependencies by hand. This was a painful exercise. Once that was done I did a further rpm -Fvh *.rpm in the fedora core RPMS directory. By this time yum was back to working. I then reconfigured it to use some Fedora mirrors. I also configured it to use the Fedora.us and Livna.org yum repositories. Fedora.us and livna.org have lots of extra goodies to install. I issued a "yum update" and yum began to sync up my box with all the latest package updates and also a swag of replacements for FreshRPM RPMS I had installed. My system is now in relatively good working order. But it certainly was a mission to get it there. Everything would have been soooo much easier had I resisted the temptation to Ctrl-C yum when it was working on my system in the first place. Just another note to say thanks to Nathan Ward for coming down from Auckland on Monday and presenting a meeting on Voice over IP. Nathan covered VoIP from several angles; protocols, software (client and server), and usage, both from an end-to-end perspective and as part of a toll bypass system (where you call from a normal telephone to another one, and get your call shunted onto an IP network along the way.) Thanks also to Gerwin and Computer Upgrades 2000 for providing an excellent venue. Over the next month we will be presenting tutorials to second year University students who will be using Linux as part of their course. The next month's meeting is going to be an introduction meeting for people who want to install Linux, so keep the date free (Monday 22 March) - the meeting will almost certainly be on the University campus but an exact location will be announced soon. We want to try and attract everyone that has felt that meetings have been a bit over their heads, people who have lurked on the list or on the Wiki and want to install Linux for the first time, want a run down on the various distros, pros and cons etc. If there are new users floating around on the list, please let us know what you'd like to see at this meeting - it's for you. The current plan is to run a Linux install live on a projector while the presentation runs so that everyone can see exactly how easy it is. Craig

Memory usage

I'm a newbie using RH9 In system monitor is see my memory usage is 303Mb, total 312Mb. CPU usage is between 2% - 5% with no significant processes running. 1. Why is so much memory being used? 2. Hi I am a newbie using RH 9 and working with the Red Hat Linux Bible by Christopher Negus. He uses a command 'lsmod' which I think is for listing modules. Hi, In conjunction with the CS Department at Waikato University WLUG is organising a series of seminars aimed at introducing first and second year students to Linux and OSS in general. We are currently in the process of planning these seminars and are looking for comments on what to include and what to leave out. For all you chaps who have windows boxes and access your Linux server/router/workstation via PuTTY.... The most interesting thing is the Unix port. Why he's done this when there are the great OpenSSH apps on most Unixes I don't know. But I guess some people will prefer the GTK front end. Anyone who needs to convert OpenSSH or ssh.com private keys into PuTTY format in an automated way may be able to do it using this utility. - There's an entirely new utility: `pterm', which is an xterm clone using the PuTTY terminal emulator. (Again, it uses GTK.) - As yet there is no Unix version of Pageant, but all the utilities can interoperate with OpenSSH's ssh-agent. Hi, Probably this isn't the best place to ask this but since it's low traffic and I'm not subbed to any of the kde lists.... In the kate editor in kde 3.1.4 there is a block comment feature and the keyboard shortcuts are comment = Ctrl+# and uncomment = Ctrl+Shift+# . I can't get these to work because in order to get Ctrl+# you actually need to do Ctrl+Shift+3. They work fine if you use the menu. I wanted to change the shortcut key but I couldn't find anyplace that allows this particular one to be changed. Does anyone know how to make this shortcut work? Compiling kernels for Red Hat

The easiest I've found to do this is to use rpmbuild on the spec file, the problem is including your own patches and getting them in the right place without conflicts. The problem I was having was that my patch (LIDS) wasw conflicting with the redhat patches. Never actually tested if it would work. Otherwise there's a base kernel.org spec file available from somewhere but I'd have to find the link to it first in the large heap of miscellaneous links. Gerwin van de Steeg

managing ip subnets etc

Hi Could someone help with advise please I have a netgear mr814 wireless router with a dedicated adsl connector and 4 10/100mBPS utp sockets. Currently I have my main linux box hocked up via a cable to this .. the mr814 does dhcp allocation .. I do not have an adsl connection, but use a 56k internal modem to connect to my isp who assigns me a dynamic ip number each time I connect. I have found that if I connect to the isp (using kppp) I cannot access the internal netwrk .. including the router (which has its own 192.168.x.x ip number .. similarly although I can dial using kppp and make a connection .. I cannot access the internet when the intenal netwrk is up and running. I presume this is due to confusion about where to send the packets .. to the modem or the lan card. What is the best way to separate out these 2 networks and get them running so .. say I could use a browser on one of the boxes with a wlan card to connect thru the main linjux box and modem to the internet? This is an area of confusion for me .. does ipchanins do something here? Thanks Stephen Pearce

Compiling kernels for Red Hat

I'm running a 2.6 kernel on my desktop (Red Hat 9) machine, with a RPM from Arjan van de Ven at http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.5/RPMS.kernel/. I want to take the standard RH kernel (which I try and keep to as much as possible) and patch it for a couple of things, and then build an RPM which is as close to the original version as possible, with just the added extra features. When I unpack the SRPM of the kernel source, I get a /usr/src/linux-2.6.1-whatever directory, and I can run 'make rpm' in that directory after configuration. However, this gives me an RPM that doesn't insert itself in grub.conf and doesn't build an initrd. I assume there is a similar method to Debian's make-kpkg that will build me an all in one RPM, and I just can't find it. I expect one of our local Red Hat gurus (orj?) has battled this before, and I'd love to know what other people do in this situation. Thanks, Craig

Forget the VGA. If you want a used 15" monitor with built in speakers I have one here you can have for $20 + Shipping ($30 Mainfreight, so $50 total). Then you could at least use 800x600 which might be acceptable. 640x480 is ridiculously small. Open Office and VGA Monitors

A while ago I posted a question asking if it were possible for Open Office to work with Red Hat 8 and an old VGA monitor, because there is a problem that the fonts are far too big, e.g. "file" takes up 3/4's of the screen. The response was basically "no" nothing practical could be done about the problem. However, that does not appear to be the complete story for two reasons. Firstly, I have seen a posting saying that it is a Red Hat 8 bug to do with the initial specification of the screen size. The message indicated that if the screen size was specified in mm's then there was no prob., but if inches were used then there was a problem. Red Hat have supposedly posted a fix, but I have not been able to find it. Can anyone tell me where to find the fix or how to specify the screen size on an installed system please? The second reason that Open Office must work with my configuration is that it does for one of the users. This user has been the most uncontrolled and cavalier in his use of the Internet and downloads. Initially, I thought it was due to the fact that he had Macro Media Flash and the others didn't. However, this proved to be not true. Can anyone suggest where I should look to find the difference that makes Open Office work for this one user, please? Thanks in anticipation Roger

Printing from the Wiki

I've just fixed printing support for the WLUG Wiki (http://www.wlug.org.nz/) If you print a page on the wiki, it'll now strip off the sidebar, top and bottom navbars, and anything else thats not really content for that page. This is done using CSS, so if you have a browser that can change style type, you can select the 'Printer' style to see what it will come out like. EG: in Mozilla, go to "View | Use Style | Printer" Or, you can *probably* use 'Print Preview' and it should more or less display right, although Mozilla is a bit broken here - it'll look like the text is overlapping, but it will print out just fine :) Daniel

PSM newbie help

I am a Linux newbie. I have recently installed a RH9 box as part of a Windows network. In Mozilla, when I try to activate my RH9, a window pops up: 'Alert This document cannot be displayed unless you install the Personal Security manager (PSM) Download......etc' I downloaded and copied mozilla-psm 1.2.1-26. to my RH system as root. 2x clicked and the installation window flashed up briefly for about 1 second but didn't install. This window said: " Preparing system update: Before modifying packages on your system package dependencies must be determined. This process may take a few minutes." To confirm, in the terminal window I typed: 'rpm -q psm' "package psm is not installed" Any help would be appreciated to get it installed. NZNOG Conference

Hi there, For those of you who are on the WLUG list, but are either unaware or not subscribed to the New Zealand Network Operators Group (NZNOG) list, the WAND group at the University of Waikato are hosting their annual conference late this month. The NZNOG list membership consists mainly of people involved in ISP's however the conference should be of interest to anyone involved in medium to large scale networks, even if they are internal or private networks. Also, if you have a good basic understanding of IP networks the conference provides a good way to extend your knowledge. They are also a great social event and a chance to meet many really interesting people in the NZ Internet scene. Almost all details, online registration etc are available from the conference website: http://www.nznog.org On the schedule are a good bunch of speakers on interesting topics including details of a major IPv6 announcement, wireless IP, VoIP, H.323 Video, NZ NGI, BGP, CityLink plans and a heap more. There'll be speakers from many of NZ's major ISPs and other major industry players and from vendors including Cisco and Juniper. Also a day of workshops and tutorials has been added to the program which will include APNIC's Internet Resource Management Essentials training course and Ian Hastie (Link Information Technology Limited) on Wireless Technology. ATI Graphics cards.

Hi. Anyone here use new ATI Radeon graphics cards under Linux? I'm looking at buying a new mid range graphics card. Ie, either an nVidia 5700 Ultra or ATI Radeon 9600XT. The supplier I'm looking at is out of stock on the nVidia cards. So I'm considering an ATI. I've never used an ATI video card. I moved from Voodoo's to nVidia way back when Quake 3 came out. In particular I'm interested to know if dual display and TV out works with ATI video cards under Linux. I'm pretty sure this works with nVidia boards under Linux. Jpegs a security risk?

A while back M$ produced a host fix for IE/OE that deems JPEG files a security risk and stops users from opening or displaying them. Is this a problem that exists for all attached images or is it just images sent from Linux mail clients? I only use Evolution for email so I'm not sure how to works between OE and OE. Anyone else seen this sort of errant behaviour from OE? Audio Recording

As part of a holiday project, I was going to transfer soem vinyls I have to CD. Has anyone done anything like this, and have any preferred tools? Recording the audio isn't really a problem. What I would like some recommendations on are tools which will remove at least some of the record hiss. I know I wont get it all, but i should be able to remove a fair bit. I'll also need to split the vinyls up into tracks, so a wav editor would be a good start. I seem to remember a linux journal article on this recently, so I'm looking through the archives, but if anyone has any recommendations / experiences they wish to share, it would be good :) Thanks, Daniel

chat/pppd dropping DTR

Hello, I have a problem with chat and/or pppd. Run via "pon" on Debian 3.0, pppd dials ok and then hangs up just after making the connection. If i change the authentication from PAP to Chat, then it hangs up after logging in. If i dial up with minicom, login manually and then run "pppd /dev/modem noauth defaultroute", everything is fine. This suggests that the hangup is occuring during the handover from chat to pppd. Swapping the Dynalink 56k modem i was using for my trusty battery powered 14k4 which has the DTR line control the power revealed that pppd was dropping the DTR line, causing the modem to hang up. So how do i stop it doing this? Setting the "local" option on pppd (instead of "modem") had no effect (other than it not noticing the modem had hung up), nor did playing with the "close_delay" option of setserial. The serial ports on this machine come from a Dolphin twin serial PCI card (currently on clearance for $10 at DSE), if anyone is familar with them. Thanks, Jon

Or something. It is just concerning me that maybe I'm loosing legitimate mail. I doubt this but it is a worry. I did a search on the web for error messages like this and they indicated that I might not have a postmaster alias setup. Well I don't. I have a "postmaster" mail account setup in cyrus so that spam bounces didn't fill up my personal mailbox. I get enough spam as it is. Which is why stuff like "to=postmaster, ... mailer=cyrus, ... stat=Service unavailable" worries me. If someone can help me identify what the fsck is wrong (if anything) and make those worrisome message go away I'd be most grateful (ie gifts would be dolled out). Environment Variable Not Appearing in New Shell

Hi, I am running Red Hat 7, kernel 2.4.9. I am using KDE. I believe I am using the bash shell. Recently I have set up a couple of extra environment variables in the /etc/profile file. They all seem to work fine except the one called LD_LIBRARY_PATH. When I login from the initial login screen and subsequently start a shell the variable is available in that environment. However, if from that shell I then type "su" and become root, the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable is not available in the new environment, but all the other environment variables appear to be. If I then logout completely and login as root from the initial screen and start a shell then again the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable is available there. Here is a snippet of the /etc/profile file: # Define the Optimizeit home directory. OPTIMIZEIT_HOME=/home/Roger02/OptimizeitSuite export OPTIMIZEIT_HOME # Set up the library path for Optimizeit LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$OPTIMIZEIT_HOME/lib export LD_LIBRARY_PATH Can anyone please tell me why the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable is not universally available? Is LD_LIBRARY_PATH a reserved variable that requires some extra configuration to make it universally available? Or have I just done something silly? Note OPTIMIZEIT_HOME was a new variable at the same time as LD_LIBRARY_PATH and is available in all shells that I have tried. I have also tried logging out and in and restarting numerous times. Hi all, Still alive? Because of the (ever-increasing) ratio of spam:legitimate posts that are getting caught by Mailman, I've changed the default behaviour upon receiving a message from an unsub'd address to 'discard'. It was previously 'hold'. I'd like to make it 'reject' (with a polite message sent back to the author) so you're all aware of when you accidentally post using the wrong e-mail address, but that just makes the spambots think we're listening harder, which in turn creates more useless mail traffic. Yes, I'm lazy. But when you get back from holiday and see "77 Pending Moderator Requests" that all require manual rejection/acceptance, it doesn't exactly make your day. ;-P -k.

Globaltech are ACCPAC partners who are looking to partner with Linux consultants for ACCPAC deployments, so if you're in the IT business, you're encouraged to attend this meeting. While I realise that this isn't relevant to everyone, that's the problem with a diverse user base. I've asked that Peter's presentation be broad enough to be of interest to everyone, and not just be a sales pitch. For the non consultant, are people interested in also having a brief look at Red Hat's new "community" release, Fedora Core 1? hey people, i have sitting in my garage the following: 1x sun server box (sans HDDs) ex uni & old 1x sun - i think - 19" monitor 2x sun sparc stations 1 with optical lan card, 1 without 1x 5x SCSI cd tower 1x 1GB external SCSI HDD (big sucker) 1x hp laserjetII with 8MB RAM (pretty sure it's that... its grunty anyway) 1x panasonic kx-p112something (its a colour or b&w dotmatrix anyway... something line that anyway) all of the sun and SCSI stuff is ex uni, ive had it for a few years and never had a chance to play with it as i had planned. so its going free to the first claimers to email me off list. there may even be an old SGI O2 for someone if i find the box. cheers... Encypting backup utility?

Does anyone know of a Linux backup utility that uses GPG to encypt individual files? I've recovered files from CRDOMs with bad bits recently, and didn't know it until I tried using them. Storing each file with a checksum would be the answer to that. Also, I'd like to be give backups to almost anyone willing to store them. Encrypting the backups would be the answer to that: "Please keep this somewhere cool and dry" is far less of an imposition than "Hide this forever. It has all my personal email on it". I think GPG encrypting individual files would provide both encryption and checksum. Is there anything wrong with that idea? And has anyone seen a tool to do this? Assuming you're running Red Hat or Mandrake, try poking around /etc/sysconfig/network. There's a ifcfg-eth0 file in there that will contain all the parameters for your networking, that is loaded at boot time. If you change it, you can reload networking with something like '/etc/init.d/networking restart' or 'service network restart' - have a look in the /etc/init.d dir, poke around, Google, see what you can find. Otherwise, you can 'manually' reconfigure an interface with ifconfig; # ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 You probably shouldn't, however, have this setup. If your ADSL router is a router, and connects into your switch, you only need one network card, which connects into the switch as well. After you get this configuration going, you can look at doing trickier stuff. You may want, for ease of configuration, to use two different subnets if you're going to have a "router->linux box" and a "linux box->windows" LAN. I have made some progress on this problem. I upgraded my Sun JVM from 1.3.1_08 to 1.4.2_01 and the problem has very significantly improved, not gone completely though. In due course I think I need to check out the number of objects created by my application as it may be excessive. Thanks again for all the help Roger

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Using the commands you gave me highlight that it is JBoss and the JVM that appear to be using up the resources. However, the "Too many open files" error has now transformed itself into a JVM crashing problem. I have had this problem off and on for a number of months, but it has now reached the point where I can't work around it. I am fairly convinced that it is a resource limitation problem somewhere, but I'm no expert in Linux and am running out of time. The server is on a small network, so I was wondering someone would be prepared to come around and look at it, for an appropriate fee, to see if there was any obvious (to them) problem. Cheers Roger

Hey ppl, I have a couple of strange things happening on my system, if anyone has any ideas on what is cause them please let me know. First, I am running RH 9 on my workstation and have a RH 7.1 box running as a webserver. I mount /home via nfs from the RH 7 box to my workstation. I have noticed that write speeds to /home are very slow, with no obvious reason. If I copy a file from /tmp (local) to /home/raymond (remote) it takes forever, and there is next to no network usage or cpu load. Transfers in the opersite direction saturate the 10MBit connection. I am using the following options for mount: rsize=8192,wsize=8192,intr Any Ideas why writes would be so slow? I have ftp running on the RH 7 box and ftping the data to /home/raymond via ftp runs at fullspeed. Second issue is a also strange, once I reboot I am able to run up2date and any rpm command, so I can install packages but after a day or two for no reason these commands just stop. They hang on execution as if they are waiting for something. You can't stop them with CTRL-C either, you have to kill -9 the process. This means I have to reboot my machine if want to install a new package, which isn't as much of a problem now I have things installed but was initially a pain in the bu when I first built the machine. "Too many open files" error

I am running an application server on Red Hat 8.0 and every so often the machine generates an error message "Too many files open" and then locks up. I have to restart the machine from the console to rectify the situation. Can anyone please tell me if there is some configuration setting that I can change to increase the number of permitted files? Is there some command that allows me to monitor the number of open files in the system? Thanks in anticipation Roger

RimuHosting is a web hosting company that does Linux Virtual Private Server hosting. http://rimuhosting.com/ RimuHosting's web page says it is based in Hamilton, but that is all. There are no names are full addresses anywhere on web site. Googling, I found a number of message boards posts promoting rimuhosting.com by someone called "Peter B". I'd feel happier if I knew more about the business than that. Other than that, does it look like good thing? A friend and I plan to run a few low volume websites from something like this. Stable Versions of Linux for Applicaiton Servers

I am wanting to set up a production application server using JBoss (written in Java) and PostgreSQL (written in C I believe), so would be interested in opinions as to what the most reliable platform would be for this. Firstly, I am wondering what flavour of Linux is considered the most reliable and what version. I am currently using Red Hat 8.0. Secondly, I am would be interested if people have experience with different JVMs for such a application. Perhaps another way of asking the same question: Are there any platforms or combination of platforms that should be avoided. Cheers Roger

Hi everyone, Because I want to see a big "Happy Birthday to me" audience, based on current relevance and suggestions prior to the AGM we're cobbling together a great topic for the next meeting: "Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam E-Mail Filtering on Linux". Suggestions for what to talk about include: * server side filtering options (MailScanner, Amavis, ClamAV & SpamAssassin, probably presented in a "How To" format with Debian Woody, Exim and Courier IMAP) * client side filtering (how bayesian filtering works, Mozilla Mail's implementation, plugging SpamAssassin into Evolution or Kmail) Since I've been doing this at work lately, I don't mind presenting it (and might even drag Greig into it too), unless anyone else would specifically like to. Linux Kernel 2.6.0

The new linux kernel stable branch, 2.6.0, is nearly here. It is currently in the 2.6.0-test stage. I've been running a 2.6.0 test kernel on and off for a couple of weeks now, and thought I'd mention it on list to encourage those who feel up to it to try it out. Some new features that I've noticed: * Crypto API support, for encrypted filesystems and IPSec * (IPSec) * /sys filesystem - like the contents of /proc/sys * Much better ACPI support * STCP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) * Improved networkin * IPv6, netfilter for IPv6 * netfilter for bridges? * ALSA sound drivers have been merged * ext2 / ext3 extended attribute and ACL support * (I think) better firewire / usb2 support * ATAPI cdwriting - no need for scsi emulation any more There's a whole lot more too, i'm sure -thats just what I can remember. It seems stable, although I have odd things happen every now and then (like, a segmentation fault when rmmod'ing a module - all subsequent module operations (lsmod, rmmod, modprobe) lock up. reboot needed. oops). Certainly, once the test kernels have finished and 2.6.0 is declared "stable", this should be a good kernel. On my gentoo box, the only thing I needed to upgrade was modutils. Your mileage may vary for other distros, so make sure to read the kernel changelog and update any packages required! I think some distros (RedHat ?) have binary kernel targets for 2.6.0 already Daniel

Basically my problem is this: I have an academic who is running win2k. He also has just purchased a scientific program that runs in linux. However he also does not want to have to dual-boot or purchase anthing more. Thinking along these lines as far as both he and I could remember, mandrake allowed you to create an image that you could load to from within windows and was doing a lot of marketing on this ability a while back. I haven't seen anything more about this on their site, so I don't know about this anymore. In the end I just need to know if it can be done with any of the distros rather than a VM of some sort. I have a question as a follow on from my mandrake one... Is there any distro that can be installed into an image within windows and then run like an emulator I guess. Ie run it and it opens up the image of a linux drive from within windows, you have your filesystem/partitions created etc. all within the image. Hope this makes sense. Cheers... david

graphics speed

Hi, I have a scientific visualisation app (cgui from http://www.bioeng.auckland.ac.nz ) that I have tested on 3 different machines and I have found that the graphics performance is opposite to what I expected. I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers about how to figure out what might be causing the slowness on 2 of the machines. The machines are: 1. Compaq Presario 2100 series laptop. Athlon XP 2400, 512Mb Ram, Ati Radeon IGP320M. The accelerated features of this graphics chipset are not supported by XFree86. 2. PC with AMD Duron 900 + Matrox GA400 graphics adpator. 3. PC with Athon XP 1800, running Xvnc 3.3.6. Viewed across 100 Mbit ethernet from vncviewer on Windows. The thing that is confusing me is that when viewing a shaded bezier surface the best performance is on machine 3 - using vnc. I would have expected machine 1 at least to have equivalent performance to machine 3 given that the rendering is being done in software in both cases. But it is noticably a lot slower on machine 1, any ideas why that might be? I haven't done any framerate measurements, the "test" I used was to load a human torso model and rotate it with the mouse. Machine 2 was the slowest at this task, so apparently there is no hardware support for shading in the mga driver or the driver doesn't like my hardware. mandrake as an image within windows

hi everyone. i always understood that mandrake could be installed as an image within a windows partition (not that its the most ideal way but i have someone who needs this sort of thing for preference), and could be launched from win. does this still hold true? am i hallucinating? need slapping? or is there another distro that does this? any help appreciated. cheers... The Hillcrest branch of the Warehouse has a table full of old computer books going for $15 to $35. Most are too old to be of any interest but there could be some that are still useful. Most of the O'Reilly books are there - Running Linux, Perl, Unix Power Tools etc, lots of programming books - MYSQL, XML, etc and lots of Windows stuff. Running/Using (I can't remember which) Red Hat Linux 6 was there but unfortunately I didn't see any of the "Unleashed" Linux series. Konqueror - Domino Webmail

I am using Gentoo and Konqueror for browsing. When I am accessing the Domino Server (R6, running on Win2000 Server) at work to read the mail via Konqueror, the Java applet for the buttons does not download and install. This results that I can only read the messages but not do anything else. Using Mozilla, it works fine in that respect. However, for some reason the fonts and colours are all so badly mucked up, that it is no good for anything (applies to all web pages). Any idea how to get Konqueror to work with these Java applets? The library wants the exact same distro... crazy as it may seem. rhl 3.0.5. Hi guys, When I was just a newbie (still am) I got Redhat linux unleashed [kit] / Kamran Husain, Timothy Parker. 1996, from the library here in Hamilton. It's a big book with a cd. It was fine and dandy until I took it back and the lady noticed that the cd was cracked... I don't know how, but it is. So I was wondering if any one has a copy of the cd or knows where to get one cheap as they want me to pay $100 for a new set. IPchains was set up originally, but has lost it settings and know does not want to work. If your internet router is a Cisco 831/837 or upwards, you could implement WCCP (WCCP is in the Wiki Pages). WCCP is not supported on the 827, 806 or downwards. That would then mean that if the students are bypassing the proxy, they would still be going through the proxy. Wiki for beginners

Hi everyone, I've been doing some tidying up of the Wiki (our web site) lately, with reference to the comments about beginners being lost. The home page has been rearranged so that it's (hopefully) a bit more obvious where to start. The sidebar has been shrunk a bit too (thanks Perry) so that the backlinks are more prominent. This way, you see not only what the current page links to, but what other pages link to this concept; a really good way to learn what connects to what in the world of Linux. I'd like to encourage anyone who thinks they qualify to look at http://www.wlug.org.nz/NewToLinux, and add suggestions/hints/whatever they need to get the information that you want to hear, on the wiki. (People normally add what they learn, which is why there's a lot about the newer things, but not as much about learning from the ground up, because most of the regular authors did that many years ago.) As a note, debates that are off topic for the mailing list might very well be on topic on the Wiki; please remember however it is another public face of the incorporated society so standard graces need apply. My 1cent worth. I belive, rather then up the bandwidth, telecom should allow ISPs to operate thier own full rate portals for ftp. This will be off more benifit then upping regular bandwidth! Waikato University Linux

I was discussing the use of Linux at uni today. One of the main points I was asked to defend was essentially; "Why does Linux sucks so much?" This persons experience with Linux had pretty much centred round the R block, and G basement computers at uni - and I can't say I disagree with her. As far as I can make out, those computers are running some ancient version of Slackware (I think?) with GNOME 1.4, and KDE2. Most of the other WMs seem to be broken. Fonts are abysmal, and the default browser is Netscape 4. The CDRom/fstab is only correctly setup on some of the machines. Frankly, it's embarrassing. While I can understand that the uni staff don't exactly have time to be reinstalling Linux every six months, and that stability is very important, this is the same config that I was using when I attempted second year for the first time back in 2001. >From a brief poke around the /proc/ fs, it's clear the machines are easily capable of running something far more up to date. I would really like to see something along the lines of GNOME 2.X, KDE3, a fairly recent version of say Mozilla, Galeon, or Konqueror, and for the love of god, decent fonts. If I recall correctly SCMS is investigating a move from Slackware to a different distro due to its fading support. However that's not something to take lightly, and the number of different services that SCMS support staff have to deal with means a change won't be for a while yet. I've talked about this problem with others a number of times. It's been ages since I was at uni now but when I was there all of the machines were well behind in their operating systems. Not just Linux machines but the Macs and Windows boxes too (well the few windows boxes I saw anyway). Whenever someone put down another OS based purely on using uni computers I just used to say to them "If you had an <insert their favourite OS here> machine set up the way they are at uni would you like to use that?". Ah come on, it's like having having personalised plates on your car... Do I have personalised plates on my car ? Mailman/Pipermail Email Address Obsfucation

Hi, Does anybody her have experience in obsfucating email addresses in list archives to prevent spam harvesting using pipermail/mailman. The standard mailman privacy options only seem to apply to mailman configuration / list information pages not the archives which are generated by pipermail, and pipermail seems to be extinct. I would like all email addresses in the archives to appear as From: Matt Brown <matt(a)m...> rather than From: Matt Brown <matt(a)myrealdomain.com> Is anybody able to offer a solution to this problem? help with backup options

Hi folks I've got Compaq ML370 G3 here running RedHat 8.0. I need to put a tape backup unit into it and have narrowed it down to two options 1) HP storage works SDLT 220 Tape Drive 2) HP storage works Ultrium 230 Tape Drive I want something that is easy to run using shell scripting for backups and of course is easy to restore. Both are supported by RH8.0 however I have never spec'd a unit for linux before. Has anyone used either Ultrium or SDLT with Linux and can let me know how they got on? KDE: how to remove the stupid dragon.

Does anyone know how to remove that stupid bloody dragon in bib that decorates KDE's logout window? "Konqi" I think it's is called. * I've used 'find' to scan my file system for PNG or JPEG files with "Konqi" in their names but it doesn't seem that simple -- all I found was an ominous image of a KDE cogwheel with a bomb in it. * I found an image that looked just like the one I wanted to removed: "/usr/share/apps/kdeui/pics/aboutkde.png". I replaced that with a transparent PNG, but that didn't help either. There are various "kde-sdscreen" RPM's floating around to change the shutdown window image. All they do is replace "shutdownkonq.png". The RPM I downloaded would have put it here: /usr/X11R6/share/apps/ksmserver/pics/shutdownkonq.png but on Mandrake I found the little bastard here: /usr/share/apps/ksmserver/pics/shutdownkonq.png And I overwrote him with a 1x1 pixel transparent PNG. It worked! P.S. while googling I found this in the mailing list archive of another LUG: "My deskpot completely freezed, couldn't even do Ctrl+Alt+Del. so I turn the power off." "Deskpot". Hi Well it doesn't work with root=LABEL=/ either .. though the custom kernel (compiled from a rh rpm source file does .. indicating to me some problem in the way I compiled the linux2.6.0test4 code ... I compiled in lvm support .. though did not include raid support .. I presume one can take the latest kernel disto from kernel.org and put it in usr/src and compile and install it (it upgrades grub automatically to include the new kernel as a boot option) and this is transparent to the red hat distro. or are there rh specific switches? re /dev/hda5 possibility this is not addressed in the custom installation which does run .. and the boot and kernel directories shopuld be the same for the new kernel. Free Sun to a good home

Hi all, I have a freebie if any one wants it: a Sun "X" 3/60. It comes with a large colour monitor, keyboard & old-school optical mouse (+ two of those special optical mouse pads). I also have a Sun GDM-1662B monitor that I used to use on my SPARCstations until I discovered the wonderful Sun Console Converter which lets you use a VGA screen and PS/2 keyboard and mouse instead! I might have a spare SPARCstation keyboard and mouse too if anyone needs them. Off-topic but I also have an RCA-brand NTSC television to give away. It runs on 110V and has F-connector RF input only (no A/V inputs sorry). I repeat, this is all FREE as I am moving to the South Island and must part with my beloved junk. Further to my recent post enclosed is my grub.conf and a list of the partitions on my disk ... the custom kernel ..2nd option loads fine but the new 2.6 kernel crashes when it tries to access root / .. despite the entry being pretty well identical to that of the custom kernel. i8500 / red hat / kernel upgrade / acpi / LVM

HELP!!! Hi All! Just got an inspiron 8500/1G/60G/dvd+rw,cdrom/etc Successifully installed rh9.0 .. then upgraded to a patched kernel from an rpm package better .. but not perfectly, optomised for the 8500 power management. Instituted LVM, with no physiscal boot partition as this is what someone who posted a fix for rh on the 8500 .. and it sounded like a good idea. Bit frustrated by lack of support, still for power management even in the patched kernel .. so grabbed a 2.5.75 kernel ..and also a 2.6.0test4 kernel from kernel.org .. compiled ok and installed to grub loader .. .. root=LABEL=/ but it won't mount root and hangs at this point. I tried changing root to /dev/hda2 .. which is where I put linux (hda0 is the dell maintainance partition and hda1 is xp .. yes got it to load and even recompiled to get ntfs support .. successfully) I presume this is some arcane problem with LVM .. any ideas .. next step might be to start from scratch and get rid of LVM. checkinstall

It was mentioned in the meeting tonight that installing from source was troublesome for package management systems in that installed files are not recorded in any database. This makes uninstalling difficult. The program 'checkinstall' goes some way in alleviating the problem. It works very well with Slackware packages; I don't know about rpms or debs. Folks, With all the MS problems/virus as well as Exchange problems I have been having, I am keen to try a Linux option at our high school. I have RH 9 Web server that performs great, no downtime. I have spoken with our board chair who is also on my side. For workstations and server what OS and Apps should I use? We need 'Office', 'Corel', 'Internet', 'E-mail', 'Publisher'. I want to put a small network together to show the staff. Any suggestions would be great. Swap not enabling

Open Office and VGA Monitors

I have Red Hat 8 on a machine, which has an old VGA monitor. Is it possible to configure Open Office to work with such an old monitor? At present the text and icons of Open Office take up the majority of the screen, so it is effectively unusable. The other applications do not suffer from the same severe problem. Common Install Standard

Hi all. Below is a submission for standard that I'm working on. I'd appreciate thoughts, comments, and ideas. Recently, I have been working over strategies for Linux on the desktop. In particular, I've been comparing usability of system administration tasks to Windows 2K/XP and Mac OS X, the main contenders on the desktop. System administration tasks are done by almost everybody who owns a computer. It's not only things like applying security patch's, but includes mundane things like cleaning out old files, changing thedial-up number for your ISP, and installing and removing software. The last point is a bit of contention under Linux. Sure, apt-get, urmpi, and the like make it easy to get and install the latest open source software from your favourite vendor, but they don't cover 'other'software. Third party, and closed source software is somewhat more difficult. Third party applications are often found on CDs, and quite often the vendor may not be around any more. While there are many arguments for and against closed source software, the fact is that it exists, and it needs to be installed, maintained, and eventually, removed. A common example of popular third party applications are games. Currently, every vendor has their own method of handling the installation and (optionally) removal of software. This is often handled by scripts, Make files, or an GUI application stored somewhere on the file system, perhaps on the original CD. This is confusing for the end user, and to be brutally honest, it's a mess. While it is possible to statically compile libraries, it's not exactly reasonable to have binary files with every single piece of information required to run a program. Things like icons, sound, data, andconfiguration files all often need to be accessible to the user and other programs. One possibility, that I put forward here, is for a simple install and uninstall system, based around symlinks, and a common applications directory. The application, to all outward appearances in most common file browsers, would appear as a file, but it's really a directory. Let us assume the application is called 'Foo'. Foo consists of binary files, supporting libraries, icons, configuration files usually found in /etc/, and so on. We can express most of these in terms of where they normally fit in the unix file system. A few, mainly icons, and programsshortcuts, vary from environment to environment. The 'Applications' folder is accessible from the users Control panel as a special directory, allowing write access with sudo and the rootpassword. The folder itself would most likely sit in somewhere like /usr/local/Applications/. Thus, our application 'Foo', would be in /usr/local/Applications/Foo/. It's file structure would look something like this: /usr/local/Applications/Foo/ /usr/local/Applications/Foo/icon.svg /usr/local/Applications/Foo/description.txt /usr/local/Applications/Foo/main -> ./tree/usr/local/bin/foo /usr/local/Applications/Foo/tree/usr/bin/foo /usr/local/Applications/Foo/tree/usr/lib/foo/libfoo.so /usr/local/Applications/Foo/install/etc/foo/foo.conf /usr/local/Applications/Foo/home/.foo/ To install, symlinks from are made from /usr/bin/foo and /usr/lib/foo/ and /usr/local/Applications/Foo/tree/usr/lib/foo/ to/usr/local/Applications/Foo/tree/usr/bin/foo, and to /usr/local/Applications/Foo/tree/usr/lib/foo/. A copy of /usr/local/Applications/Foo/install/etc/foo/foo.conf is made to /etc/, so that changes made to the configuration do not affect the original files of the program. At the most basic level, Foo/ needs to be copied from it's original source to /usr/local/Applications/ and a script run to copy files in Foo/install/ and make symlinks of the files in Foo/tree/. However, this allows for much greater usability. The file Foo/icon.svg can replace the standard folder icon, and Foo/description.txt can contain multiple language descriptions of the program, to be read by any program used to handle the installation and removal of applications. On moreuser-friendly systems, double clicking on the icon for the program on a CD would prompt the user if they wish to install the program. Attempting to delete the 'program' from the Applications directory would prompt the user if they wish to 'uninstall'. The computer would then remove the symlinks and any configuration files. It also allows the program to ask if the user wishes to remove the system configuration files, originally copied from the the Foo/install/ directory, and user configuration files, originally copied from the Foo/home/ directory. Other benefits of this method come to mind. Source installed packages, for example, Mplayer, instead of being installed directly into the file system, is instead copied into /usr/local/Applications/mplayer/, and installed in the above manner. Mplayer can then be copied easily to other systems, and removed easily. It is also fairly easy to install such applications in systems that do not support it 'natively'. Although a simple shell script is all that is required to 'install' the programs, files can easily be symlinked and copied by hand if need be. I will emphasise again that this system is not meant to replace things link apt-get and rpm, but sit alongside them, and provide a common simple platform independent way of installing third party software.

I propose we have another week of trying to put information into the Wiki. Google searches

Is it just me or have we fallen off Googles radar? I've tried a few searches including (without the quotes - they just show what i searched for) "wlug", "waikato linux users group", "linux afsnotes", "linux wlug ipv6" and i didn't get a single hit for the wiki. I did get a few hits for "waikato linux users group" that referred to the mailing list, or links from other sites. Has enabling ipv6 on www.wlug.org.nz broken googles ability to access the wiki and provide links to it? Just a thought - not sure what else could be the problem. Ideas? Gavin Grieve
