Fonts on Ubuntu.

Hi Folks. I've switched to Ubuntu Breezy from FC4 on my laptop. Everything is going swimmingly. However one thing is odd. Fonts. The fonts in Ubuntu on webpages and apps don't appear quite the same as on FC4. I've installed the MS TT Core fonts package so I have Arial, Tahoma et al installed. But things still look different. Things look clearer in some apps (I think this is the freetype2 hinting setting at work) which is nice but other apps are ugly. Particularly GTK+ v1 apps are all jaggy. Also some websites don't look the same as I'm used to. Like as if the Arial fonts arn't being used.... Anyway, sage advice on fonts in Ubuntu would be apreciated. Regards, PS: Happy New Year

mythtv question

I've installed MythTV (0.18.1-5) under Ubuntu 5.10. Under the Video Source setup option in mythtv-set, the XMLTV listings grabber has no option for New Zealand. There doesn't seem to be any way of changing what's in the list, other than recompiling from source. Is there any way of configuring MythTV without using the gui or other option for specifying where to get the NZ TV listings? I don't seem to be able to procede without it. Regards, Jon

Superfluous files?

I first used chkrootkit recently. It categorised certain files of mine as suspicious. I understand that it did so because those files were hidden ones, but were not in my home directory. Many of the files chkrootkit called suspicious were connected with earlier kernels that I hadn't uninstalled, so I uninstalled those kernels. That reduced chkrootkit's list of suspicious files significantly. One of the files still on the list was associated with Firefox v 1.0.4. (I use Firefox 1.0.7.) On investigation, I found that in /usr/lib I had three directories, each connected with a version of Firefox earlier than the current one. Is there any risk involved in deleting the three directories?

Thanks both to Oliver and to Aristotle for taking the trouble to reply to my query. I'll have to take Aristotle's word that the difference between my second and third results, as implied by Oliver, was caused by /proc and /sys "files", since I don't know how to act on Oliver's suggestion to exclude those "directories" from my command. I printed out and tried to read the entire man page for "find", but that didn't overcome my ignorance. Thanks again, Leslie

I wanted to discover the number of files on my system. I found on the Web the suggestion that the way to do so was to type in the Terminal, as user, "find / \! -type -d | wc -l" and then press "Enter". I did that. The names of quite a few files appeared on the screen, each with the words "Permission denied" after it, and then, ultimately, the number 153,406. I decided to issue the command as root instead, to see what happened. No file names appeared on the screen as they had before. I just got the number 154,821. That was 1,415 more than earlier, though the number of filenames which had appeared with "Permission denied" the first time round was nowhere near as many as 1,415. I next edited my sudoers file, so that, as user, I didn't need to enter a password in order to run "find". I then typed, as user, "sudo", followed by the command I'd typed twice before. That time, I got the number 154,722. Can anyone explain to me why I've been getting the different results that I have?

Hi I remember some postings some months ago about not being able to log on to the ASB unless using Internet explorer. I heard today that Firefox 1.5 was able to log in. I tried it and it does. (under windows at least) I will try under Linux tomorrow. Yeh one less reason for using windows!! Another thing I haven't seen posted is an article I found in the Post DB Open Source Project, Run by an editor of the Bangkok Post, found here http://postdb.ricshreves.net/archives/ An interesting link to the NBR where The New Zealand State Service Commission is promoting use of the Open Source Content Management System Plone for other agencies. ssh and cat problem

Hi again everyone. In my continuing quest to automate absolutely everything about rebuilding one of my computers, I'm writing a script that will generate a key relationship between it and my laptop (which I use for remote backup sometimes). I'm able to create the public and private keys without problems, but when it gets to adding the public key to the laptop ("scarlet"), I run into an issue. I don't want to just copy the public key into ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 on scarlet, because from an aesthetic point of view, and a portability point of view, that's just nasty. If authorized_keys2 exists already, I'll overwrite it and cause myself pain. So, I instead copy the public key into my home dir on scarlet (scp ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub bnonn(a)scarlet:~/) However, I then want to append the contents of this key to the authorized_keys2 file in ~/.ssh/ on scarlet. Seems to me that the best way to do this is to simply cat it, since this will create the file if it doesn't already exist. I'm using the following command: ssh bnonn(a)scarlet cat ~/id_dsa.pub >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 This, however, appears to have no effect at all. It doesn't return an error; it just quietly does nothing. Again, I apologize if this is again an example of my fundamental dimness, but any help would be appreciated. Regards, Bnonn

1/packet writing for cd 2/formating flash memory stick

Hi Can anyone help me here please. 1/ How do you do incremental writing to a cdrw under linux. I have a cdrw which was formated under windows .. used the INCDFS file system according to the properties report in wondows. With this I can then write, and delete files from the cd .. within windows .. as if it was a large floppy or removable hard disk. Under Fedora Core 4 the disk mounts ok and I can read the contents at anytime .. but I cannot do the incremental writing .. I have looked up linux references to this INCDFS using google and not found anything of significance. Any pointers to making cdrw work more adeptly would be appreciated. 2/ My 64Mb and 128 MB usb memory sticks mount fine under fedora core 4 and I can delete and write to the devices .. deleting I think puts the data into a trash directory .. but when I empty trash it does not seem to free space on the device .. also .. although ".Trash" appears when you mount it in Windows .. and you can delete the files and reclaim the space there .. .Trash does not appear in the Linux FS .. even using say mc which would normerly show ".--" directories . Also formating the flash memory does not seem straight forward .. I tried mounting with fdisk and deleting all partitions, making a siingle FAT32 partition .. then using format to format it .. unsuccessfully ... are there any tricks here? Formating under windows seems straight forward. Thanks Stephen

Adept crash- graceful resolution to debconf

Having converted from Suse9.2 to Kubuntu I have appreciated the Adept front end to dpkg. However the other day, it locked up my machine so I crashed out of X and rebooted the system. However whenever I start Adept now it mentions that another process is in effect and that I need root permissions to run Adept. Having run Adept as root it still won't let me install further packages and when I try it reports debconf:DbDriver "config" /var/cache/debconf/config.dat dpkg:status database area is locked by another process dpkg run finished I assume the file "config" is locked by the aborted Adept process. I was wondering what the graceful way of resolving this problem Delete config.dat? BTW, I have been pretty impressed with Kubuntu Cheers Chris

nvidia-glx-legacy has gone from bad to worse

When I first upgraded to breezy I was mildly annoyed that the nvidia drivers broke, I had to install nvidia-legacy instead, and that all of the openGL stuff stopped working although the driver appeared to be loading and xorg seems to think everything is in order. Programs like glxgears would tell me I didn't have GLX. Programs like mplayer would work with "-vo xv" which was good enough most of the time so I didn't worry about it too much. Just recently I thought I would try to sort this out properly. I removed all of the 'restricted' modules and glx stuff, including config, via synaptic, then cleanly reinstalled the nvidia-legacy kernel modules and nvidia-glx-legacy package. Now glxgears exits with a segfault. Worse, so does mplayer even when I use -vo xv and even if I'm trying to play some audio-only file (or even no file at all!) Where to I even begin trying to find out what's messed up and how to fix it?!

no audio input sources

Aleisha's computer has a SoundBlaster Audigy and a fresh install of Kubuntu 5.10. When i load Audacity or any other sound recording program, no input sources are available. Where you'd expect to see "Microphone", "Line In", etc, the list is empty. If i turn up the volume on the microphone in alsamixer, i can hear it through the speakers. arecord claims to be recording, but the resulting .wav file is silent. Audio playback is fine with every program i've tried. Also on my computer with an nForce2 chipset, i can record via line in, but not microphone. This might be due to me plugging in a mono microphone plug into it and shorting something out. (Computer microphones seem to use a stero plug to provide power to the microphone.) Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Jon

Desktop internet dialler in Ubuntu 5.10

Hi, In the weekend I installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my Dad's PC to replace Mandrake which didn't have support for all his hardware. It seems to have everything he needs except a sensible internet dialler. I was able to connect to the Internet by using the "Network settings" gui to configure the ISP parameters and then activate the modem device. But that seems like an odd way to dial up and isn't particularly obvious. I then installed GnomePPP but it didn't work. After some searching I discovered that it needs to have wvdial set up but that didn't work either due to the restrictive permissions of /etc/ppp/*secrets, and the wvdial man page just says "yeah we know about that and don't have a solution". I could probably fix that but I was expecting it to "just work". Whats up with that? I expected that an internet dialler frontend would have been part of the basic functionality. help with network connection please

I have installed Breezy badger on my other computer and was working well - I then moved the computer upstairs and now cannot connect to the network that I have. I had the same problem with windows and fixed this by changing the speed from 100BaseT full duplex to 10BaseT full duplex. I think that the problem is the poor quality of the network cable. How do I change the connection speed with Ubuntu? I am a newbie so will need simple instructions Thanks John

I was unable to find the applet. so far I am using a "pon' script because I could not get the correct modem setting into the network gui until I learn about "udev". sudo and writing to /var/log

Hi everyone, I'm writing a small script to automate backing up to a remote machine using rsync. As part of the script, I'm directing stdout from rsync to /var/log/b.netbackup.log. The problem I'm having is in actually outputting said stdout. I run all my scripts with user privileges only, escalating to root only those commands within the script that need it. This has various benefits in my eyes: 1. Principle of least privilege; why run a whole script as root when you can just run certain bits of it? 2. No need to error-check UID=0 3. Anyone in the sudoers group can run the script. So normally I just type the script name from the dollar prompt, rather than sudoing it. Inside the script itself, rsync is run with sudo, so as to both read certain files in /etc/ which have 0600 umasks, and also to be able to output to the log file in /var/log. HOWEVER You would think (or at least, I do) that something like "sudo rsync options source destination >> /var/log/logfile" would NOT give you a permission denied error. Similarly with "sudo date > /var/log/logfile". But you would be dead wrong. Running the entire script with sudo (ie, sudo b.netbackup) will work fine, as will running it from a hash prompt. Anyone got any ideas why I can't write to a log file using sudo? Hopefully it isn't something really obvious that will demonstrate my fundamental lack of understanding of how Linux works... LUG Roundup Competition

The competition was opened at last nights LA Live from SLUG. Closing Date is 16th December at 5pm. hoiho moving - service disruption

Hi All, As many of you probably know from previous posts to the list earlier this week hoiho's current hosting arrangements are coming to an end. Over the weekend we'll be moving hoiho from its current home at Tintz Digital to the Orcon Internet datacentre. Unfortunately most services offered by hoiho (HTTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, etc) may be unavailable at various times over the course of the weekend. We are endeavouring to keep downtime to a minimum of course! Hoiho should be back up and running at full steam in its new home from mid Monday morning onwards. problems connecting to the website

Hey All. I have been having a lot of trouble connecting to the Wlug website recently. It's been at least a week, mayeb two since I remember being able to connect. I'm having the same problems from the Office and at home. I tried it from Olivers place last night and he also couldn't connect. Oliver has a different ISP. As I'm in Melbourne all of these attempts would probably use the same link to reach to New Zealand. All of these attempts where using Firefox. I have now attempted to view the site from a couple of US based machines using lynxs and from home using links and have had better success, although not what I expected. One of the US machines complained initially with [socket failed: family 10 addr 2002:d237:12fa::1 port 80.] this is probably due to having a badly setup ipv6 config. It then falls back to using ipv4 and works, but at bytes per second, 100 *bytes* per second. Which is very very slow. I see the same speed from the other machines, no ipv6 error tho. Has there been any changes made tot he server config in the last month? I know that another wlug list member was having trouble connecting earlier in the year which I think was resolved once their ISP fixed up some routing issue. I no longer have any NZ based shell accounts so I can't do any further testing, I assume it's ok inside NZ otherwise someone would have mentioned something earlier. Does anyone have any suggestions for diagnosing connectivity issues like these? I guess a step by step process for diagnosing such things would make a good page for the Wiki. Raymond

Cool process utility

Hate having processes die because of kernel upgrades? The thought of losing your irssi scrollback just too much for you? http://cryopid.berlios.de/ Compile (I needed zlib1g-dev on my Ubuntu machine which had build-essentials installed) and then run 'freeze' to save processes to disk. You start the process again by executing the file that it saves - there is no 'thaw' utility It can't save a screen session, but you can save the processes inside them and rescreen. Craig

I'm sorry to bother people about this again. What I thought was a solution to an earlier problem turns out not to have been a permanent one. I wanted to open some ports in the above modem, but couldn't access the modem's internal web server using Firefox for Linux. I was, however, able to do so using Internet Explorer (on my dual-boot computer) and to create an appropriate NAT rule. Then, when I restarted the computer and booted into Linux, the rule I'd created in Windows persisted in Linux. However, when I later powered the computer (and modem) down and then powered up again, the rule I'd created was gone. Since the WLUG wiki page on the modem referred to using the CLI and to some material about doing so, I got that material and studied it. I then did the following: - booted into Windows; - (re)created my NAT rule via the Web interface; - restarted in Linux; - tested the rule, which worked; - opened the CLI and issued the command to get me the rule, which worked; - issued the command to delete the rule, which worked; - issued the command to (re)create the rule, which failed. Installing Skype on Ubuntu [Rant]

It seems to be to have more "stuff" with it: which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your opinion. Apps and Eye candy are also a bit helpful in the choice: not just for me, either. I will put it this way... with the exception of MPlayer (matter of preference for media players) and programs like Skype, there is very little else that needs to be installed on a brand-spanking new install of SuSE, and most of the dependancies for these programs (except maybe the Win32 codecs for MPlayer) are already included and configured with the System. As I said, I still like Ubuntu, and am now considering running Ubuntu on my laptop (lightweight distro, at least, until I put some more RAM in it) and SuSE on my desktop (When I build it). It is possible that I am biased because I am more familiar with SuSE than I am with Ubuntu - it is the distro that rescued me from the "Red Hat = Linux" mindset (RH was what I had been using for most of my "Linux life"). It is also the distro of choice when I install Linux for other people (if not only for the eye candy. In saying that, though, I don't see why I can't resurrect some old hardware with the aide of Ubuntu, given that SuSE can be a heavyweight on old systems, if the people whom I am moving off of Windows don't want to buy a Mac Mini or something. So yeah: After using Breezy for a couple of days, I do now like Ubuntu as a distro; despite my being a sucker for eye-candy, though if I end up using it more than a week (quite likely at this point), then I'll start customizing Gnome with some themes and custom icons and all that. Consider my rant over. I now like Ubuntu more than I did the other day. But I still like KDE as well - I'm sure I can add it on somehow (I use both UIs... they both have certain features I like about each one, so...) When I have time... Linux for Grandmother

Going on from my previous post, would you all mind if I sent my grandmother to the next installfest and/or meeting? I threw together a SuSE 9.1 Personal system on an old box just before I left NZ, and they took the box home from my parents place the other day. What they seem to use the computer for is: Internet Email Office (Writer, Calc, Impress mostly). Is there a publisher equivalent that you would recommend? I hate publisher myself, but... yeah. Not a whole lot else. I don't mind whether you leave SuSE on the box or if you "upgrade" it to Breezy, I am happy to support either from the other side of the globe. It needs to have **A VNC server installed and configured for me to be able to do this as well, so... yeah. **A nice, easy, clean, pretty interface. **I don't think it would have to be too similar to Windows 98. Box specification is (as I said, old) Cel366/128/6GB/CD, Modem, Sound Blaster 16... Used to be in mums shop before she upgraded. Hello, I have set up a Phpwiki using my Suse Linux Box on the company lan and using Apache, Php, MySql using the code from the Phpwiki site. I've manage to get it all going quite nicely many of the staff are keen to use it as a collaborative documentation site for keeping each other informed of the latest technical information available or the gotcha's you find working with different manufacturers equipment. I've got the linking to other pages, webpages and email addresses working fine. What I was know wanting to know was how to link to various documents etc we might have on our servers. It's an MS Active directories network. I can link to documents I put on the webserver easily enough but what about P:\Library\Electrical\Transpower\Standards\ABC.pdf Any hints appreciated. Ubuntu Breezy (5.10) CD's

Encouraged by some of those replies to do so, I re-configured the modem in Windows, using the instructions from the D-Link Australia site. I then switched into Linux and found that the changes did what I'd hoped (at least for now!). My thanks to everyone.

Installing Skype on Ubuntu [Rant]

Today I "rescued" my laptop (temporary measure as it needs the hard disk replaced) by installing Ubuntu Hoary over what was SuSE 9.3. 1. Yes, I know I could get breezy. It would take <5 minutes to download on my connection here (Yay for 40 megabits). 2. SuSE 10 will be going on the new hard drive, anyway. [That DVD ISO took around 2 hours] Here's why I'm a bit frustrated at the moment with Ubuntu: I wanted to install Skype. Skype is a KDE app, (and it looks ugly in Gnome - there are workarounds, but aside from that). It requires libqt3-xxxxxxxx. Firstly, I was trying to install it from the .deb package distributed on skype.com <http://skype.com> (skype_1.2.0.18-1_i386). Err, no - turns out I needed libqt3c102-mt_3.3.4-3_i386. So I download it. I read that I can use libqt3-mt_3.3.5-1_i386 instead, which is supposed to be a better way... I thought hrm... I should only need this package and maybe one other... but no. Next, it tells me that I need (insert several GCC-related libraries and supporting packages * 6) Why is none of this mentioned on any of the forums I ended up going to? Long story short: Here is what I ended up downloading and installing with dpkg (and for some parts I used Synaptic, but I couldn't make a local repository? What about apt-get? Would that have made life easier?): cpp-4.0_4.0-0pre6ubuntu7_i386 gcc-4.0_4.0-0pre6ubuntu7_i386 gcc-4.0-base_4.0.2-3_i386 initrd-tools_0.1.81.1_i386 [and Ubuntu versions of initrd-tools 0.1.77 and 0.1.78; however they wouldn't work with libc6] libc6_2.3.5-6_i386 libfontconfig1_2.3.2-1_i386 libgcc1_4.0.2-2_i386 libqt3c102-mt_3.3.4-3_i386 [which was replaced with libqt3-mt_3.3.5-1_i386] libqt3-mt_3.3.5-1_i386 libstdc++6_4.0.2-3_i386 libxrender1_0.9.0-2_i386 nscd_2.3.2.ds1-20ubuntu14_i386 and of course skype_1.2.0.18-1_i386 Not only did I have to get the required versions of these files from ftp.fi.debian.org/ <http://ftp.fi.debian.org/>, but the Ubuntu versions were "outdated" in terms of version numbering. According to most of what I read, I should have just needed to resolve 1 or 2 things (ended up downloading the repackaged skype .deb from a link posted on the Ubuntu Forums). Now, aside from all that, when I went to install libc6_2.3.5-6_i386, I found it conflicted with initrd-tools. Which is a vital part of the OS, if I am not mistaken. However at some stage over the several hours I was installing and figuring all this out, it installed. At some stage Synaptic decided that it would be a good idea (well, it asked, and there didn't appear to be any "argh! don't do that!" option) to remove most of the base system because I no longer had initrd-tools. So I downloaded initrd-tools 0.1.81, installed that, but now I want to install things like locale, but it won't because it needs a whole lot of other things. I think if I reboot this machine it... well... won't. Perhaps I will download and install Breezy and give the same task a go. As I mentioned originally, installing Ubuntu on this hard-drive was just a temporary measure so that I could at least browse the net. I like Ubuntu, but I felt that I really had to stuff around to get this app installed (and even then it doesn't seem to quite work correctly). Did I just have a bad experience (that perhaps I shouldn't have?) Maybe I have been somewhat spoiled by SuSE, and I don't use Debian-based Distros that often, so I'm not as used to them, but has anyone else experienced similar problems? D-Link DSL-302G modem queries

I use the above modem, connected to my Ethernet port, with Fedora Core 3, kernel version 2.6.12-1.1378. I wanted to try out an application called Qnext, which is, among other things, a videoconferencing application. However, it insisted that the ports it required on my machine for incoming communications were not accesible by external contacts. Looking for the reason why that was, I found at the Australian D-Link site information about opening ports in the modem and realised that that was my problem. The D-Link information was for Windows only, so I looked on the Web to try to find information applicable to Linux. That led me to the WLUG Wiki page on the DSL-302G. That page contains the fullest information available on the topic, at least according to my Google searches I'm posting this because I'm hopeful that a subscriber to the list has followed the instructions on the Wiki page successfully to open a port. Unfortunately, I haven't even been able to take the first step, accessing the modem's internal web server. My Linux browser is Firefox. When I ask it to go to 10.1.1.1, I'm prompted for the user name and password and I give those and press Enter. Then, the browser says that it's waiting for 10.1.1.1 and never connects. My computer is dual-booting and my Windows browser is Firefox too. I tried to access 10.1.1.1 with it and had exactly the same result. I also have Internet Explorer and when I go through the same routine with it, I get the modem's internal web server instantaneously. Here are my questions: 1. Is there some thing I should be doing to access the server in Linux Firefox? 2. If I can't use Linux Firefox, is there some other browser anyone's used successfully? (I tried lynx, but it wouldn't work, I suppose because of the need for username and password. Maybe one can add those to the lynx command string, but that's way beyond my capabilities.) 3. Finally, I don't understand the effect of changing settings on the modem, but is it possible that changing them through Windows, which I think I could manage, would change them for Linux too? (I don't know how to express the idea technically correctly, but are those changes somehow internal to the modem and independent of the operating system used with the modem?) If anyone can give me information on any of the above questions, I'd be very grateful. Leslie PS: Ian McDonald, who kindly directed me to this list, said he thought that there'd been some discussion on this list recently about my modem. I searched for "302" by thread for each month for 2005, but found nothing. Perhaps the thread didn't make reference to that number. In any event, if you see this, Ian, I wouldn't want you to think I didn't bother trying the archives first.

Hello all, Just wondering if anyone might be able to give me some clues here. I started Apache on my system and the following error was returned. Apache seems to operate okay but I was getting a similar kind of error in the log files when I was running Privoxy, an advertisment and cookie crunching proxy server. When the proxy server was operating it was this error that kept slowing the response of the server. /etc/init.d/apache2 start returned 0 (success): Starting httpd2 (prefork) ..done httpd2-prefork: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName Any clues? DNS, host file problem. Running Suse 9.2 on PIII on a company lan. No firewall running on machine. PCI adsl modem.

Well i've had a lot of trouble with my adsl modem over the years... All probably being due to my very crappy DLink 302G adsl modem. It has slowly become the bane of my existence... So what I want to do is, one of two things: If possible I would like to get the 302G modem running in bridge mode, so that I can connect to it with pppoe. I have tried numerous times, but my linux box refuses to see the "Access Concentrator" when I try to set up pppoe. I've followed the instructions from DLinks site to use bridge mode, and I've tried using the updated firmware too. Both to no avail. Has anyone managed to get this modem working in full bridge mode, (not the half-bridge mode detailed on the wlug site)? The second option is to buy another modem. I want to try using a internal ADSL modem this time. Does anyone know which modems that are available in New Zealand work under Linux? -- Cameron

Ok. The clean slate worked really well. I downloaded a "breezy" iso then burned a cd image and reinstalled the whole thing. I now have a working (mostly) version of ubuntu. Thanks for the help. Kubuntu = Ubuntu with a kde desktop manager. Right?? USB Headset

Hi all. A week or more ago I posted about my interest in purchasing a Plantronics USB headset and whether it might work under Linux. Thank you to those who responded to that post. On Friday, after receiving my copy of World of Warcraft, I decided I needed to replace the dodgy analogue Plantronics headset I have with a USB one. It seems the only computer store near my place in Melbourne's CBD that stocked headsets was Harvey Norman and they only stocked Logitech devices. I bought a Logitech® Premium USB Headset 350 <http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/AU/EN,CRID=103,CONTENTID…> and hoped for the best. As expected it works well on Windows for WoW. :) Tonight I decided to test it with Linux and I'm happy to report that getting it to work with Fedora Core 4 was a simple case of plugging it in. Hot plug and udev did their jobs and I could instantly twiddle with the mixer settings in Gnome Mixer and Audacity grabbed audio from /dev/dsp2 without a hitch. I'm well pleased. Regards

Thanks for the help Craig, very tempting to go home and try it now, but will have to wait until this evening. I knew that there was more than one way to skin the cat, but couldn't figure out how to integrate the help from the various pages/wikis. What are you experts partial to? Would ice cream persuade you to come along and help? I originally proposed next weekend for an installation day. I think this is too soon now, and I would like to get more experience before such a day. Can the experts please email me privately with a day/evening that is convenient, between now and end of November. I envisage a sat/sun with expert help for a few hours in the morning, and the experimenters can carry on through the day. Or the experimenters can start in the morning and experts turn up for lunch and solve all the problems in the afternoon. Location: my place in Ham East. Content: limited to free to air TV reception Bribery: Ice cream and other food and drink Date to be announced. Expressions of interest from experimenters would be helpful too please.

In step 2 of the instructions, it gives details of how to grab the listings from ontv or mrgeek and also how to create a symlink between the tv_grab_nz_mrgeek (or ontv) to the tv_grab_au file that will be selected in the next step. >From what I can understand this tells mythtv where to look for the current tv listings. Am I right in assuming that through this setup mythtv will grab the settings automatically each week, or does that still need to be set up? Is anyone else using the scripts from zaf's webpage? Do the scripts need modification? 2. In step 3, section 3 - "Video sources" of running mythtv-setup as the mythtv user I create a new video source, and called it FTA or similar, and selected the "Australia" option. This creates a file in /home/mythtv/.mythtv called FTA.xmltv If I cancel out of the mythtv-setup program then this file will contain no code. The instructions then say to run mythfilldatabase --manual as the mythtv user but this doesn't work, I get an error along the lines saying that --manual is not a valid option. Any ideas how to proceed from here? What does the FTA.xmltv code look like? Any one got this file for Hamilton? 3. Hi Folks. For some unknown reason my plantronics headset makes nasty noises when I'm trying to record voice. Lots of background hum etc. On my laptop the hum is unusably bad. On my media box it isn't so bad. Anyway, I thought I might get a USB Plantronics headset to replace this one. I'm thinking it being a pure digital device the hummmmmm might be avoided. Anyway, I did a little Google for Linux and Plantronics DSP-500 and came up short. It appears to work but people seem to have problems integrating existing soundcards and the USB audio device. Most of these web pages mention old distross or kernels. Has anyone used a recent 2.6 kernel with ALSA and had joy getting two sound cards (or USB audio + sound card) to work well? MTAs, oh the choices...

Now that I've got a debian box I have a somewhat more eclectic selection of MTAs. Instead of being "stuck" with sendmail I can select either Postfix or Exim. Currently my box has postfix 2.1.5 installed. But I see that I can install one of the following: Exim 3.36 Exim 4.50 (stable) Exim 4.52 (testing) Postfix 2.2.4 (testing) I know Daniel is fairly familiar with Exim but I know nothing about these alternative MTAs. Can anyone provide sage advice on which has more features, is easier to configure, has powerful plugins, db support, IMAP server integration, virtual domains, spam filtering that sort of thing. Distro Question - Terminal Server

Hello all, I am trying to get a 'proof of concept' machine going that will emulate a Terminal (serial port) Server. ie. Connecting via SSH and get access to a com port via a VT100 terminal session. I'm looking for a distro that meets specific requirements: (If anyone can recomend any hadware equivalent devices, that would be appreciated also.) My requirements are (in oder of preference): * SSH * minicom * Good NIC detection * Small resource requirements (pentium I, approx 32MB ram <1GB HDD) * pref LiveCD or simular that will install onto HDD * CLI only - X not required, in fact, I'd prefer no X at all. Most of the mini distros seems to be lacking minicom (usually rescue distros) or are geared towards running some form of mini-X (usually also lacking minicom). The closest distro that I have found that may do the trick, is FreeSCO. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Ivan

My Laptop's Hard Disk croaked yesterday. The device is less than a year old but it decided to destroy itself. No idea why. So backup early and often people. You will be thankful one day. I'm glad I have _any_ backup at all. Even if it is 3 or more months old. Regards

Exim Install on Ubuntu

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've tried apt-get install resulting in: ivan(a)silver:~$ sudo apt-get install Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. My understanging of the above is that my system is clean. (FYI: I'm running Ubuntu 5.04) I have installed exim4, exim4-config, exim4-doc and found that anacron, at, lsb, mailx & mutt were still installed, but postfix, postfix-lts, ubuntu-base had been removed (as expected). So all seems fine. Thanks for all the feedback - it looks like it was just a storm in a teacup. Ivan. Quite an interesting article here: http://beta.news.com.com/Microsoft,+JBoss+link+server+software/2100-7344_3-… It goes further than I would have expected from Microsoft as it includes working together on Active Directory integration and allowing SQL Server to be a back end. Only question I have is how much will actually be open-source as the article says "most" JBoss software is LPGL.

Exim Install on Ubuntu

Hello all, I've decided to install exim using Ubuntu's Synaptic Package Manager. When selecting some of the packages, some unexpected packages are marked for removal (see below). Marked for installation: exim4, exim4-config ==> automatically marked for removal: postfix, postfix-lts, ubuntu-base, anacron, at, lsb, mailx, mutt Can anyone explain why these are marked to be removed? Further to my post yesterday ... I pulled out the flash rom chip ... and removed the cmos battery ... left things for a few hours .. then reinstalled .. and it booted .. fine .. then reset it and the same problem recurred .. then reinstalled flash rom but left cmos battery bu out and left overnight .. .. it rebooted ok .. I wonder whether some of the memory in the flash rom has "gone stale" i.e. is returning equivocal logic values ... if so is this due to flash failure or the expected degradation of memory in a flash device after 4 years? Alternative is static damage at a gate level which is intermittantly casuing failure .. hdd seems to be reliable ... I plan to re flash the rom when I get home Stephen

Hi Same error, same conditions, Fedora core 4. Then lost control of keyboard ... .. could this be a virus using the recently identified hole in Firefox to download code to reprogram the flash rom? The alternative is a static spike which fried a whole lot of disparate systems .. would a hdd failure be consistant with being able to read to grub stage 2.? hopefully just corrupted the flash rom.. which might also be consistant with a wide range of disparate symptoms. I have a hdd partitioned for windows 98 and linux .. I could not get past the grub stage 2 phase .. and the keyboard would not respond to trying to "del" during boot to access the cmos ... so I reset the cmos on the motherboard (perhaps in retrospect ill advisedly ... it now gives a keyboard read error ..) if it is a fried motherboard .. does anyone have a k7s6a elite surplus/sale? It was thepccompany .. which of course is no longer! I'll have to pull it apart to see what processor and memory type it is .. unless someone knows. I have downloaded the firmware upgrade and plan to extract the flash rom and reprogram it in an eprom burner (if I can find one which suits the flash device en29f002t/5v challanging .. and frustrating symptoms! (I suppose it reflects crappy component tolerances .. maybe we should all buy pentioned servers as the engineering in these is a bit better) any new info appreciated Thanks Stephen

scanning for an IP address...

Does anyone know of a tool which will let me discover the IP address of my ADSL modem in this setup : LAN <----> switch <----> Linux Server <----> ADSL Modem My computer is in the LAN, the Linux server is a Debian Box with no monitor or keyboard, and the ADSL modem is a DLink 302G (the kind you get free with an Xtra connection). The Linux server has two network cards in it, one connected to the switch (eth0), and one connected straight to the modem(eth1). The ADSL modem has been configured into half-bridge mode as discussed on the wlug wiki page for it (http://wlug.org.nz/DSL-302G) which means the IP address that appears on the Linux box is the external IP address of the modem, or at least the last one that was used. Now the problem is, I want to update some configuration on the modem, but I cannot remember what the IP address for it is. All I remember was that I changed it from its default. Does anyone know of a command, presumably that I would run from the linux box that I can use to find out the IP address of the modem that I browse to, to configure it? -- Cameron

Devices, udev, device numbers

Hi there, In the process of setting up webcams (and getting greatly frustrated) I have been using mknod to create device entries. This is something I'm not really familiar with and I have some questions. I am trying things at present and don't really know why I am typing stuff I find in Google! Questions: 1) How are major and minor device numbers assigned? e.g. a webpage will say type "mknod /dev/video0 c 81 0". I understand the syntax but why 81 and 0 for the major and minor numbers? 2) How do these devices you create interact with udev? Permissions and other things seem to disappear after a reboot. Should I be using udev instead of mknod? URLs to articles would be appreciated or just people's comments. I promise to Wiki what I find out as I have been doing for most of my discoveries... Ian

Hi there, I'm trying to get a couple of webcams going in Linux. One is a firewire card and one is a USB. They are both loaded on my system and are partially usable (e.g. Firewire one works in Gnome Meeting). My question is how does /dev/video0 come into existence with video 4 linux (aka v4l)? I have tried using mknod and that can create it but it doesn't make it usable. I've hunted around the web heaps and not found much at all. Questions: - is there a magic step to create /dev/video0 automatically and I haven't set it up? - or is it that my drivers aren't really working well? Ian

802.11G Wireless Cardbus cards for sale

Hi, I recently acquired a bulk lot of brand new (shrinkwrapped) 802.11G Wireless cards through an auction. They caught my attention because the particular models were compatable with linux. They are DLink DWL-G630 cards, hardware revision D1, Firmware 4.10. They use the Atheros chipset, and are fairly easy to get to work in linux using a recent snapshot of the madwifi drivers. I'll provide some better notes on the wiki once I get time. I've got 5 for sale. I also have a pair of DLink DWL-G650+ cards, which I believe have an ACX chipset. Last time I tried to make an ACX chipset card work in linux, it didn't like me very much, but I've heard good things about getting the DWL-G650+ to work with the driver available from acx.sourceforge.net. They'll work fine in windows. If you'd like one of these, mail me offlist. Mainly because I wanted a newer version of a package I use. I'd like to know A) if this is advisable B) if going all the way to unstable is advisable. What are the security patch repercussions? Debian tips

Hi people. I've just leased a Debian server from Server Beach. I've managed to upgrade it from 3.0 to 3.1 and install a few apps I want to play with. However I'm a recovering RedHat user and therefore very green when it comes to Debian. ;) I would appreciate any sage advice/tips to help me transition from people (Daniel?, Perry?) who've made the switch before. Hey all I had a problem with the "simple" install of Ubuntu Hoary which I thought was due to me not paying attention to the partitioning thus not including a swap space. However I retried the install and paid attention to what happened. Almost at the end of an otherwise uneventful install the programme said: "Ack! something bad happened trying to recover". Sadly ths was not the case much custard was developed. I guess this is a (no cay)nown problem but i did not read about it yet in my limited experience. Regards John

Debian user defaults.

Does Debian 3.1 use the usual your uid is your gid standard?? The useradd tools seem to be creating users with their gid set to users(100). Is this normal? Personally I prefer the uid==gid approach that RH uses. Is there a setting I can change on debian? I'm very new to debian so I have no idea where to look. I find this fairly interesting. http://internetnz.net.nz/government/2005-survey.htm Basically (and obviously this is my opinion); National sucks (and I am a Nat supporter) Labour sucks ever so slightly less The Greens ROCK The other responding parties appear clueless (SURPRISE!). I assume, based on Rodney Hide's fairly passionate views on IT (which were closely aligned with the Greens views, strangely enough), that ACT do have a policy, and have simply not submitted it yet. Winston is most likely too busy digging dirt to be bothered filling out the questionnaire. I know it's a single issue, and shouldn't really form the basis of any intelligent persons vote, but I think it is concerning that neither of our two major parties "get it", and it is left to a party often written off as hopeless idealists to have the best, most progressive policy on ICT issues. mythtv installation day?

I am trying to install mythtv on my ubuntu box, but without success, so I need help! I propose a mythtv installation day/evening, but will require some experts to come and help us novels. Are there any locals willing to help and advise? Depending on numbers interested I can host this event at my place, plenty of tables, power points, bbq etc I am thinking of the weekend of the 8th/9th October as that is only a couple of days before my jetstream quota renews itself, so we can blitz the connection and only suffer dial up speeds briefly. The New Zealand Linux wiki is a frontend into the data of Waikato Linux Users Group wiki. It is designed to open the amazing resource of user contributed information to participation from members of other LUGs, and free software/open source users and supporters in New Zealand. After a somewhat shaky start, I'm pleased to announce a redesigned theme for the site, now live at http://wiki.linux.net.nz/. The theme is the handiwork of Craig Box and Simon Bridge, based on the WLUG theme by Matt & Kat Brown, and is the culmination of suggestion and assistance from both the NZLUG community and WLUG committee members. We currently have three nominations for committee members, and require at least seven. Mobile Repositories

Hello all, I have recently upgraded to a larger HDD and I decided to install (Ubuntu) from scratch. This required all the updates and installation of all the additional packaged that I use. The problem is that I only have dialup Internet access and it took some time to download. I also have a requirement to update 2 non-networked PCs. I am using Ubuntu with Synaptic Package Manager, which works well, but I am not sure how it works 'behind the scenes'. The idea I have is to create a specialised repository that contains specific apps (or updates), which can be placed onto mobile media for installtion onto the non-networked PCs (as well as a being a backup). Can anyone out there shed some light on how to create such a repository or any other possibilities for installing packages onto the non-networked PCs? Some topics I love more info on are: * Where do packages stored when downloaded and how long do they remain there? * What is required for creating a repository? * How do configure Synaptic to access this new repository? Hi all, It's almost AGM time. Craig tells me that survey responses are coming along nicely, and that several people have said that they would stand for election to the WLUG Committee. To date, we have recieved no nominations, and time is growing short. If you wish to nominate someone, please get in contact with them and confirm their desire to be nominated. Wireless performance

I've been twiddling with my wireless router settings and nothing I've changed so far has improved performance. Some appeared to degrade it a little. I'm still only getting 120kbytes/sec in gFTP/SSH. Which translates to about 1Mbit/sec. This is supposed to be a 54Mbit device. Come someone else with a 802.11g wireless network do a little throughput test and let me know what sort of data rate they get. Thanks.

Hey peeps. I'm thinking about getting a replacement dedicated server. I was thinking of getting a server from ServerBeach.com. They offer bother Debian 3.0 and FC3. I was think from a maintenance perspective it might be wiser for me to use Debian. Though now that 3.1 (Sarge) is out I'd prefer to use that. Is it possible and/or easy to upgrade 3.0 to 3.1 via apt-get dist-upgrade? Advice, experiences, etc appreciated. Regards

Transparent bridge ADSL modem

Hi all, I am looking for a reliable, good quality ADSL device that can be used as a transparent bridge to a Linux machine. Some of the Linux machines we have run as IPSEC heads, and by far the best way to make sure that the device correctly forwards packets on certain protocols (not ports) would be to have it transparent. Ultimately what I want to have is this: internet -- adsl modem -- [linux (eth1: public IP) ] [linux (eth0: internal IP)] - nat The closest I've got to this before is the M1122 on PPTP, but I would rather the bridge was at ethernet level if possible. Can anyone make any recommendations on devices that do this? Reliability is far more important than price (these will be for business customers) and I would prefer something that has firmware upgrades available without a support contract. Thanks, Craig

I am not aware of any DSL modems that do PPP-to-Ethernet relaying. I'm not even sure how you would implement this in the DSL modem. I guess the eth interface of the DSL modem would have to emulate the IP of the upstream side of the PPP link, and provide some sort of DHCP server to assign that IP as default-gateway to the downstream client). In accordance with Rule 6 of the charter, I would like to announce to all members that the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated) will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 26 September, 2005, at 7pm, at the regular meeting location of room LitB at the University of Waikato. New committee ============= All WLUG members are encouraged to stand for election onto the WLUG committee for 2006. The charter currently specifies the committee as consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and five general committee members. Because of the relatively large size of the committee compared to the organisation's membership, the outgoing committee intends to propose a change to the charter at the AGM. We wish to call for a vote on modifying Rule 7 to require only three general committee members, not five, and modifying Rule 6 such that the quorum for committee meetings is four, not five. To stand for the committee, please email secretary(a)wlug.org.nz. If you wish to nominate someone, please contact them and ask if they are willing to stand; if you would rather not contact them yourself, feel free to email me and I will pass your request on for you. Some Ubuntu synaptic ftp sites no longer available on my machine

Regarding metal objects that may impede the signal: I thought of wrapping an empty toilet roll (or similar) with aluminium foil then adjusting the size to act as a collector/reflector and maybe getting some signal gain if placed in a strategic location. I've been meeting lots of people here, and every time the topic of computers comes up, and I say I've been 100% virus-free for 4 years, people ask me how I've done it, and what they need to do to make the switch to Linux themselves. Does WLUG have any official points of contact for linux newbies seeking to kick their proprietary software addictions? Hi Guys. I've got a 802.11g Wireless card and Linksys WAG54G. I've also got my "NAS/Media Centre" connected to the WAG via wired 100Mbit Ethernet. Now, "G" wireless is supposed to be 54Mbit per second. Which if you take it at face value should give you around 6Mb a second transfers. However whenever I'm transfering to and from my NAS I'd be luck to break 200kb a second. Now I know the "advertised" speed of 802.11g isn't close to 6mb/sec but I would have thought I'd get faster than 200kb a second. Why is it so slow? Good distro for old machines

I have a tutor with a problem. He wants to send a whole lot of machines back to his home town in South Africa and has asked me to help. The problem is that most of the machines have 32/64MB RAM and only P2's with very small hard drives. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a distro that would run on these specs and be easy for people who have not touched a computer before. Ideally, it would run XFCE or something that is low on resource usage. I am looking at maybe Puppy, DSL or MepisLite. Cheers Nick

bash versus the space character

Does anyone know how to get bash to split the output of a command enclosed in `` the same way it would split the command line if typed in? Everything i do to try to escape spaces ends up not working. Eg, this command (for sorting the songs from _The Dark Side Of Phobos_ in level order) produces a string that can be cut'n'pasted to bash, but if i change the echo command to mplayer, it doesn't work as bash split on spaces. echo `find . -name '*E1M*' | awk '{print $2,$0}' FS='[()]' | sort | sed -e 's/[^ ]* $.*$/\1/' -e 's/$[ ()]$/\\\\\1/g'`

2006 - Dunedin, NZ! linux.conf.au is the annual Australasian Linux technical conference, and is one of the largest gatherings of users and developers of Free and Open Source Software in the Southern Hemisphere. It is an opportunity for developers and groups to present their ideas amongst peers, and for the Free Software and Open Source communities to gather in general. Summary: Call for Miniconfs The 2006 conference is being held in Dunedin, New Zealand, at The University of Otago[1]. More information can be found on the conference website: http://lca2006.linux.org.au/ Call for Miniconfs: The organisers of linux.conf.au 2006 would like to invite any groups or organisations wishing to hold a 'Mini Conference', or 'Miniconf', to present a short proposal outlining their interest. Miniconfs are held on the Monday and Tuesday before the start of the main conference (23rd and 24th of January 2006). Proposals for 1-day or full 2-day Miniconfs are welcome. Proposals should be made via email to the main conference organisers at: organisers(a)lca2006.linux.org.au . Proposals are due by Wednesday August the 31st, 2005. This is a very short period for proposals - Just over two weeks, since there have already been expressions of interest from several groups, and we wish to provide organisers with as much time as possible to organise their Miniconf. Using SimplyMepis 3.3.1: I have to access work using a Cisco VPN connection. I have installed "vpnc" and "tun". I can establish a VPN connection and get an IP address assigned. ifconfig tun0 tun0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:10.255.255.1 P-t-P:10.255.255.1 Mask:255.255.255.255 I then added a route with the work IP address range: route add -net 10.83.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev tun0 However, I cannot access the servers at all. New Zealand Linux Wiki

Hi everyone, At the last WLUG committee meeting, we discussed the topic of the "NZLUG view" into the WLUG wiki. The issue is that we have a very complete archive of Linux knowledge related to New Zealand that some people incorrectly believe "you have to be a WLUG member to use". The WLUG committee are committed to making our wiki useful and accessible to everyone, while retaining its identity as "the official WLUG website". We would like the wiki to be relevant to all of NZ's Linux users, not just those involved with WLUG or NZLUG. We also respect that much of the content has specific relevance to only New Zealand. Much discussion took place on the various options to rectify this situation, with the two main options being: * Remove the "NZLUG view" until a national organisation is in place * Rebrand the "NZLUG view" as a New Zealand Linux Wiki, now The committee decided that the first option may send the wrong signals regarding our intentions, and has therefore decided to offer the alternative view under the tentative name of "New Zealand Linux Wiki", and publicise it to all New Zealand LUGs. 9.3 seems to have bumped up its detection of hardware I'm pleased to say. It managed to detect an old scsi card that 9.1 & 9.2 both did not pick up. As a consequence I now have my tape drive & cdrwiter back... Yay! You can also choose a gnome install for suse (it's been my default choice since 9.0) although a few people up @ the uni seem to prefer the kde install. I only just installed FC4 on my Laptop and I'm happy enough with that. Certainly the Geekiest of the Sys Admins at work seemed to think SuSE was nice. Though he still uses primarily FC. I've toyed briefly with a SuSE 9.x Live CD just after I got my Laptop. It didn't detect all the hardware as well as FC3 did so I didn't dally with it long. Also, I'm not a big KDE fan. Good too see that Novell is being more open about SuSE development though. The whole Cathedral built from OpenSource bricks idea is not so good IMO.
