Sierra Wireless USB 308

Sierra's website says this device is compatible with Linux. I did an install of Ubuntu 10.04 recently, and initially the Sierra USB thingy was working fine, but then it stopped. Fiddled around a little and I eventually got it to work again (I'm not sure that anything I did was actually responsible for this) but apparently it stopped working again shortly after I left. A few weeks later I upgraded all the packages, something I hadn't done during the install, and the device started working again. I rebooted the machine several times and each time the connection came up reliably soon after I connected the device. Now it's not working again. It's not working on my Debian machine either. But it works perfectly in any windows machine every single time, and I've carefully checked the APN, authentication and compression settings and made them the same under Linux (PAP only, no compression anywhere) but still no worky. Any suggestions?

What are the best practices for Linux partitioning & Mount points for Production systems Hi i need some suggestion for defining the partition size for my production systems. we are going to use CentOS 6.2 (64 bit) - Partition size - Mount points What i am able to get from the google search is: / Root File System (/bin , /sbin , /dev , /root /usr program and source code /var variable data /boot boot kernels /tmp temp file locations /work to do your work here "you can name it anything" Swap - */home* - Set option nosuid, and nodev with diskquota option - */usr* - Set option nodev - */tmp* - Set option nodev, nosuid, noexec option must be enabled - /var local,nodev,nosuid Most of the server will be running - Apache -Tomcat -SOLR and few of them would be running MySQL as data base. what is concern is that one of the developer accidentally deleted the /usr files with sudo access. if somehow i can protect the core system from the developers mistake that would be really good. ANNOUNCEMENT: Annual General Meeting, 12th March In accordance with Rule 6 of the charter, I would like to announce to all members that the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated) will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 12 March, 2012, at 7pm, at the regular meeting location of Room MS4.G.02 Several officers and committee members will be stepping down this year. Society membership has also gone down recently. Present and past members interested in seeing WLUG continue as an IncorporatedSociety are encouraged to attend this years AGM to meet quorum requirements and stand for election. Note: To be eligible to vote at the meeting you must have previously been a financial member (although not necessarily for the 2010 year) and pay your membership for 2012 at or before the AGM. To be eligible to vote or stand for office at the AGM members must have paid a subscription for the 2010 year before the AGM. If you'd like to stand for committee and have not paid for membership this year, please do this prior to the meeting An amendment about who can vote at the meeting was passed in 2008. "That the WLUG charter be amended to allow former paid members of the WLUG of good standing, whose membership has lapsed, to vote at an AGM of the WLUG with the proviso that they rejoin the WLUG and pay a new subscription at or before the AGM."

Shuttle PC free to good home

Just came across this article on ars technica: "KDE developer Aaron Seigo has announced a new upcoming tablet computer, called the Spark, that will ship with KDE's Plasma environment. The device, which has a seven-inch display and a 1GHz ARM CPU, will sell for €200 ($262). Underneath the shiny KDE surface, the Spark reportedly runs Mer, a community-driven fork of the Linux-based MeeGo platform. Garage Cleanout Redux

Hi all I still have some bits and pieces that may be of interest to WLUG members. 2x HP Jetdirect EX Plus Printserver (10Mbit RJ45 + BNC). No PSU, 13VDC, looks like it may be HP proprietary. 1x Axis 550 printserver (10MBit RJ45 + BNC), with psu i think. 1x Axis 83 Device Server. RISC based embedded system, lots of hackability. http://www.lilax.net/textfiles/2003-04-19/axis_82_82_lowres.pdf. 32bit RISC ETRAX 100LX MCM2+8 CPU, 6MB Flash, 16MB ram, dual ethernet, dual rs232 serial, single rs485 serial, USB1.1 port. Lots of support for building custom linux builds to go on here, eg ddwrt. (I've definitely built custom images to go on this system, although I can't find current links to any docs) 2x External modems. Two PSUs that probably go with these, but I'm not sure. 1x 3com Homeconnect DSL Modem. DSL1 only, runs with pppoe back to your host, so it terminates the IP on your machine. No wifi. Dates back to when DSL was first introduced in NZ. Industrial patch cables. 7 x 2m, RJ45 (8P8C) to XP85, and 2x2m XP85 to XP85. XP85 is basically a secure screw fitting around an RJ45/8P8C jack. One Emulex LP8000, which had current driver support (lpfc.ko) in debian lenny at least, and two Compaq Tachyon adapters, which show up on the bus, but don't seem to have active drivers since around 2.6.8. There's still 2.4 kernel support for them however. There's also a pair of Compaq Fibrechannel Hubs. Everything has optical modules, and there's a few fibre patches as well. 2x ISDN cards. Single basic-rate ports I think, I can't recall the name, if you're interested I'll dig them out. 1x 17" CRT monitor, in good condition, works well. All the above is free to whoever wants them, you must pickup from Hillcrest area, or from the CBD during business hours. No guarantee that any of it works. Being now a Linux Mint convert (SuSE -> Ubuntu -> Kubuntu -> Mint), I'm looking forward to what the Mint community comes up with their Cinnamon fork of the Gnome shell. They are attempting to use Gnome 3 technology to give you a Gnome 2 layout: http://h-online.com/-1402913 Why did I change Linux distributions? - SuSE -> Ubuntu: back in the days, the SuSE distro that I had downloaded via dial-up was riddled with bugs including the update manager. Updating manually turned out to be way too tedious. An Ubuntu live CD came in handy there. - Ubuntu -> Kubuntu: Unity, nuff said. Also, originally long-time KDE user. - Kubuntu -> Mint: Kubuntu being a bit sluggish and the taskbar buggy (didn't like long sessions with opening/closing lots of windows). If you haven't tried Linux Mint, give it a go. It is a very polished Linux distro. I figured out the problem. I found out last night that one shouldn't temporarily store stuff in the Templates folder, because it Nautilus then thinks everything in it is a document template. I moved the contents to another folder, and now performance is back to normal. Sandy

how to nfs export with file system acls

Hi. I have a "CentOS release 5.3 (Final)" server that I need to replace. I need to migrate this server to a newer platform. It is currently exporting a xfs file system with facl's , and these work well with both new and old client machines. I have tried to replicated this on Ubuntu and , discovered that I need nfs v3 and facls support compiled into the kernel, I believe that RHEL6 / CentOS 6 should have this support, but I'm still not seeing the correct results. The client doesn't have the facls , and when writing files over the export the default facls are not correctly propagated. What have I missed in the configuration ? KDE 4.7.2 bug: entries added via kmenuedit don't show up in menu

Hi there Just came across an annoying bug in kmenuedit in 4.7.2, when adding custom launchers. After clicking "Save" the launchers don't show up in the menu. After some digging around I came across the following thread: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3118688.0 A quick fix, thanks to this thread, is to go into the following directory: $HOME/.local/share/applications And remove the following lines from the affected .desktop files: OnlyShowIn= Path[$e]= That will make the entries appear again in the menu (just log out and in again). Oneric Oncelot

Greetings all, I'm just writing to find out how people have gone with their Oneric Oncelot upgrade. I upgraded my laptop to the latest Ubuntu [1] or more correctly Kubuntu [2]. The three issues that I have encountered so far are: 1. the power management means the laptop no longer turns off via the normal interface. I have to use the power reset button to turn the laptop off 2. the second issue which has now resolved involved a number of attempts at migrating my mail across to the new akonandi set up. 3. the third issue I've encountered is that the laptop takes a very long time to get to a usable desktop after logging in via kdm Overall, kubuntu is getting more polished now at release 4.7.1. it will be interesting to see how the new database driven personal information manager (PIM) works. As a means of generating some discussion, I thought I would invite others to outline some of the issues they have had in upgrading. So, how has gone for you? We will be announcing an AGM shortly. This is to vote on the committee members for next year. John Billings will be stepping down as club treasurer since he is moving to Wellington. Prior to the AGM Ronnie will be taking over the role of treasurer. If you are interested in taking on a role within the committee please contact me in the coming weeks. If you feel someone would be good for the role, perhaps nudged them and see if they might be interested in standing. Finally, as club president I am inviting anyone interested in presenting a pet topic to contact me for our next wlug Monday meeting. The meeting is scheduled for October 31. Please contact me off list if you are interested. As an aside, I am writing this e-mail using DragonDictate. It is working pretty well. big problem with openoffice & libreoffice...

Cairo's been writing fanfiction lately, originally using openoffice .. and most of the time it works fine, but every now and then when she saves and exits she ends up with a zero-byte file. There's plenty of free disk space and I don't see anything in /var/log/messages indicating filesystem trouble, so I tried updating openoffice .. and a while later it happened again. The next time I switched to libreoffice, and set it to always make a backup. Today she's had the same problem again and lost about 40 pages of writing. There's still plenty of free disk space, nothing in /var/log/messages to indicate a filesystem problem, and NO backup. All I know is she's not accidentally highlighting and deleting everything because what gets saved is 0 bytes, NOT an empty document... I've already suggested (after the first time) that she needs to keep regular backups on google docs, or just write everything directly in google docs, but openoffice/libreoffice should NOT be this unreliable and I've never heard of anyone else having similar problems.. Any idea what might be going on here? other technical details; it's a fairly default and up to date install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with a default filesystem (I think that's ext4)

Hello everyone, The WLUG committee are considering organising a Saturday Workshop at the Uni for October 1. Can we have a 'show of hands' on who is likely to turn up, please? We had a few problems with last month's workshop and it would be good to avoid that scenario again. On behalf of club, I would like to apologise to those members of this list who had travelled some distance for last month's particular workshop and found it not happening. As club president, I had made some assumptions about the attendance of others that often organise and champion the workshop day. Recognising that they could be a problem on the Saturday morning of the event, I made what I believed were sufficient arrangements with Univerisity security stafff and communicated this to the club member that believed would be attending. Unfortunately the communication was only one way and I had to leave Hamilton for a prior arrangment. Sorry for the mix up. Any type of "locked" electronic devices have proven to be less valuable than their "unlocked" counterparts. It is not in the interest of commodity hardware manufacturers to allow MS to essentially lock their devices. How Microsoft Can Lock Linux Off Windows 8 PCs

Just came across this gem here on slashdot: "Windows 8 PCs will use the next-generation booting specification known as Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). In fact, Windows 8 logo devices will be required to use the secure boot portion of the new spec. Secure UEFI is intended to thwart rootkit infections by using PKI authentication before allowing executables or drivers to be loaded onto the device. GNOME Workspace issue

I've suddenly noticed that I'm unable to switch between workspaces. Neither clicking on the workspace applet nor Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right arrow work any more, and I'm at a loss as to why this might be. I can still send windows to another workspace, but I can no longer get to them. Would anyone have any ideas about why this is happening? This is 11.04 x64.

Laptops/PC's for Demo/Testing of Instant Infrastructure

As part of the :ii project, it would be interested to try installing on various laptops and desktops that I wouldn't normally have access to. At this point it will format whatever is on the hard drive and install Linux or Windows with a predetermined configuration and software set. Hi everyone Just a quick announcement regarding the "Gimp for photo restoration and touch-up" presentation that Jody, my wife, will be giving at Software Freedom Day this Saturday. Feel free to bring photos that need restoring or touching up. If you don't have digital versions of the photos, that doesn't matter as we can scan them at the event. Of course, she'll only be able to work on a limited number of photos during the presentation and throughout the day, so please don't feel left out if your photo can't be looked at. However, looking over her shoulder and talking to her should give you a good idea on how to enhance the photos yourself. A couple of guys from Tauranga want to introduce the local community to a project call instant infrastructure <http://ii.code.org.nz>. We are presenting at SFD in Tauranga Sunday! We want to enable non-technical people to install operating systems and applications (in possibly complex and interdependent configurations) to computers that have blank or format-able hard drives. The computers may be configured to be centrally managed over the network for ongoing support and maintenance. This could happen from a smart phone or usb stick... On the technical side I've be trying to get Virtualbox booting the infrastructure from Ubuntu and after that it won't be long until it's selfhosted starting from Windows, OSX, or Linux. This would allow people from many different experience levels and backgrounds to participate in sharing solutions. WLUG now has Elgg (open source social networking)

Hello all WLUG list subscribers, Since Peter Reutemann's presentation on Elgg at our last Monday evening meeting, Peter, Ewen Cummings and John Billings have been working to establish Elgg on the wlug server. Elgg is open source social networking software and our case, is another avenue for WLUG club members to interact online. You can share photos, create discussion forums, write your own blog, link in your twitter feed, and follow discussions via RSS. There are many more plugins available and the site will continue to receive additional features. The existing wiki is not being superseded by this at all and will still be the place to document technical and linux related things. So it is my pleasure to extend this invitation to all members and list subscribers to check out Elgg, create yourself a profile, upload a photo of yourself and have a bit of play on the site - maybe even create a group for your own pet topics and invite others to join. http://elgg.wlug.org.nz/ The following site lists many of the plugins available to the site. Introductions and Instant Infrastructure

Hello Local Linux Community, I'm an opensource enthusiast who has recently moved to the area and looking to get a bit more connected. I'm currently working on an instant infrastructure project to assist small to medium offices (non-profits and education are my primary targets) setup a functioning centrally managed computing and network infrastructure. The initial code is up at github. https://github.com/passionengine/ii/wiki Long term we should be able to boot an entire infrastructure from a smartphone or simple network device and create usb boot sticks for anything that doesn't do pxe booting. It will take bare metal machines (no os, no virtualiziation) and build them up with Ubuntu, XP, and/or Vista configured with a chef-client to keep them maintained centrally via a chef based infrastructure. I'm hoping to pull a demo together by mid-september and present at Software Freedom Day weekend (Waikato on Saturday and St. Mary's on Sunday). Software Freedom Day 2011

SFD 2011 is a little more than a month away, and I'm just wondering who all wants to be involved. It's on 17th September this year. We are planning to have it at Uni, at the very least we can use our regular meeting room, and have a really low key day, or in the past we held it in the S block building foyer, and used some of the lecture rooms to do presentations. I was over at the Uni today and talked to Sally Jo and she seemed to think that would be fine if we wanted to have it there again. The NZCS meeting today was about the Linux cluster there, and the presenter said he'd be keen to give a talk/demo the cluster at SFD. We will be putting up a display at the library first week of September, as all the boards were booked the second week, and distributing some flyers around. If anyone remembers what we did in 2007, I thought that went well, having some tables set up w/ different demos and information, and we ran presentations throughout the day. I'm good for one table, and one presentation on something (possibly 20 years of Linux?) So let me know who all wants to be involved and what you would like to do. Best, John

It's going to be presented by Donald Neal, from the high-performance computing arm of The University of Waikato - he's the main man who keeps their Symphony cluster running. They tried to push a $99 warranty (Consumer Guarantees Act does this so waste of $$), and MS Word/etc as well hehe. Cheapest I could find this on the ´Net was $430. Brief specs: Intel Atom N570 1.66GHz Dual-Core 1GB DDR3? RAM - Max 2GB. ~250GB SATA HDD NM10 Express Chipset Webcam Sound Bluetooth 802.11b/g/n Wireless Grabbed Kubuntu Netbook iso, created usb boot drive, blew away Win7 Starter, installed fine, sound and wireless appear to work out of the box (no drivers D/L´ed) - can see several other wireless APś in network scan so I´m guessing that means itś working. Abstract: We begin with a brief historical background of monetary information technologies, digital currencies and p2p currency. Next is an introduction to the open source bitcoin protocol, block-chaining, the coin issuance algorithm, the recording and securing of transactions. After these preliminaries, the talk will be an open-floor format discussion with demonstrations. A short user-space demo of web wallet, bitcoin client and send/receive public key address usage will be given. Next we'll go "under the hood" and look at how the code and the network is functioning. Topics that can be covered include, but not limited to; location of significant files, configuration of the bitcoin.conf file, securing the private keys contained within wallet.dat file, running "bitcoind" on a linux machine with the command line query/response interface, building the code from source and alternate clients. Finally, we'll finish up with a demonstration of a 6 node GPU OpenCL GPGPU cluster, aka bitcoin "mining rig" in action.

Hey, You are basically running it already without a battery. Taking the battery out should not affect the operation of your laptop any further. Need to make custom film cables

Hiyas, I figure someone in Wlug might be able to point me in the direction of how to get this done (or have some nice fancy gear at work): I need a couple of board-to-board film cables printed; 1.5 mm spacing at one end (and thickened, to insert into a connector), and 2.625 mm spacing at the other (mated face-to-face with exposed traces at the end of a membrane circuit). Hand-painting the missing traces on the existing ones I've got just isn't cutting it, so I figure it's best to find someone who can screen-print this sort of thing. I have two different cable shapes, need three or four of each, and can provide PNG masks. Anyone able to help? ta, Bryce

Garage cleanout

Hi all I've got some boxes of old bits that I've hoarded over the years, that I now think I really need to get rid of. 2x HP Jetdirect EX Plus Printserver (10 Mbit RJ45 + BNC). No PSU for these, they'll need a 13C DC centre-positive psu. 3x 56k external modems. One is a 3com US Robotics, the other two are unbranded as far as I can tell. I may have a 4th modem somewhere as well, I can't recall right now There are two PSUs that probably go with these, one is a 12V 1A PSU, the other is a multi-voltage 3V-12V, 0.5A one. 2x speedtouch pro DSL routers, with PSUs. Both were working fine when I last used them, which was around 3 years ago. 1x Compaq Evo T20 thin-client + PSU, part # 238365-001. This is probably running WinNT embedded, but it can be reflashed to run linux. 300Mhz processor, 64MB flash, 128MB RAM (I think). I put some notes up at http://www.wlug.org.nz/CompaqEvoT20Notes about reflashing them, and I think I still have the CDs of tools that I used, which I'll put in with this. There's quite a few resources on the internet for reflashing these too, eg http://www.mowson.org/karl/evo_t20/ and http://open-evot20.sourceforge.net/wiki/ Industrial patch cables. 7 x 2m, RJ45 (8P8C) to XP85, and 2x2m XP85 to XP85. XP85 is basically a secure screw fitting around an RJ45/8P8C jack. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3Com_Audrey) This is a very early internet appliance (~2000), running QNX. It's missing a PSU, and I don't know what condition it's actually in as a result. New PSUs can be purchased from http://www.audreymadness.com/, (they're a fairly non-standard pinout and voltage supply). I also have some old Fibrechannel gear. One Emulex LP8000, which had current driver support (lpfc.ko) in debian lenny at least, and two Compaq Tachyon adapters, which show up on the bus, but don't seem to have active drivers since around 2.6.8. There's still 2.4 kernel support for them however. There's also a pair of Compaq Fibrechannel Hubs. Everything has optical modules, and there's a few fibre patches as well. A Sun Netra T100, missing disks and ram. The disks are standard SCSI SCA disks, but the RAM is harder to source - you need "Mezzanine modules", like these: http://www.memoryxsun.com/netrat1.html. I had actually ordered some for it at one point, but the seller managed to lose my order. Pretty sure this system also has a quad-port 10/100 NIC in it, but if you want the NIC, you take the whole lot. Finally, my old desktop. Athlon 1800+XP, 1GB of ram (I think), single SATA disk (80GB?), DVD writer. PSU was changed not long before I stopped using it. I can't recall what the graphics card in it is, but it's not super flash. Was working fine when I stopped using it. All the above is free to whoever wants them, you must pickup from Hillcrest area, or from the CBD during business hours. No guarantee that any of it works. If it doesn't go here, I'll either put it for $1 reserve on trademe or dump it.

I installed Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.9 on a friends comp. It's based on Meerkat Kubuntu and it always wants to log into KDE. I have to specify Gnome at login everytime rather than it remembering the last environment that was logged into. Whereabouts can I get to this and fix it. cheers GL

See below, --Flipside-- Archlinux allegedly was created by former Crux Linux people. There you had to compile the operating system kernel and your applications. Often applications didn't compile, and you had to hunt around to find out why. Bit of a worry when you needed things now; okay when time wasn't an issue. Archlinux doesn't expect you to compile either your operating system's kernel or your applications: they come precompiled - though for nothing less than a 686-CPU. Tough if you've got something less/different, but then you could always go for Slackware instead (there everything's compiled to run on a 386-CPU!). A program called 'pacman' does what 'synaptic' does for Ubuntu and Debian. If for some reason you want to run, say, Slackware programs, you can easily do that. Just make sure the libraries are there compatible. But remember, Archlinux packages are compiled for i686 systems, and therefore usually faster. By the way, 'pacman' will respect 'alien' software and simply refuse to install over it. What did +I+ select? X-window manager 'blackbox' - it's anything but a 'black box'. Firefox, sylpheed (email), geeqie (image viewer), totem (media player). I've used mplayer/xine/vlc before, but I think totem's the better player. mplayer, however, comes with a lot of encoding stuff such as avisplit etc., so I've kept it, just in case. qemu emulates my old Windows 3.11 system: now I can still use my fax-machine (even as a printer). qemu also emulates a Sinclair ZX running very old games (the emulator's written in MSDOS assembler). Archlinux also has a Commodore C64/PET 2001 emulator (vice), in case you've got programs for these veterans (supports C64 sound!). Archlinux supports a parallel printer port, be it for talking to another oldie using the PLIP-protocol, be it for reading from/writing to an IOMEGA Zip-floppy (not being sold any more, though pretty much alive). I also run Open COBOL on Archlinux to manage my video-clip library in a COBOL database. Much handier than using a clip-on database. But that's largely a matter of taste. COBOL supposedly is dead, but somehow must have managed to rise from the dead as Open COBOL. Archlinux' flipside? #Debian's repositories are expected to have eternal life, but would the same apply to Archlinux' pacman repositories? Gnome 3 is out

GNOME 3 brings new operating concepts and a new look; the GNOME Shell reduces the visual complexity of the user interface to allow users to better focus on the applications that they use. Ubuntu 11.04 and Unity

Was eager to trial this, so downloaded the newly released Beta this morning. I tried it on my desktop computer and was surprised to find it much closer to 10.10 than I had expected. It was still running Gnome. More checks and trials - Unity was there - just couldn't seem to get it running. Took it my laptop, and voila - Unity! (Could even change to Gnome). After a few trials, I think I could get used to Unity! The conclusion? It would appear that Unity requires a reasonably-specced graphics card. Previous experience, both directly and indirectly, leads me to suspect that my desktop's graphics card is not the best ... it has problems coping with Stellarium. Anyone got any comments or observations to add? Michael

Antique floppy drives?

Michael Cotter <michael.cotter(a)xtra.co.nz> has genealogy information stored on a 5¼ inch floppy disk and no longer has a computer that can use this size disk. He would very much like to contact someone in the area who still has this technology so that he can download the information and save it onto more recent technology and use it with a new genealogy software programme. Michael is leaving the country for 3-4 months on Friday so if possible he would like to contact someone before then.

Full partition. Any ideas?

Hi all I have a friend with a problem. His Ubuntu system (2.26.32-x) won't boot. Booted from CD. Gparted showed partition partition size (ext3/ext4) is 120GB and 100% full. Disk analyser only shows 20GB in files (though 120GB on partition). Robbed 2GB from swap file to add to partition, but partition still shows 0% free. Can read files in the partition, but have no idea where that 100GB has gone. Since disk has another unused partition, plan of attack at the moment is to install 10.10 in the unused partition and recover data as needed. Anyone else seen this problem before? Any suggestions? Network set up

Hi I wonder if anyone could help me with suggestions for software and configeration for the following hardware network set up :- wifi link to isp via router(A). Local ip allocation by router(A) (say 192.168.2.3 ... but could be different depending upon state of router and other connections to it.) Wifi network card(A) in relatively low spec pc (B)... ideally 256-512 M memory ... x86 ... cd live or flash drive boot ... hopefully also sans monitor and keyboard and supporting web based interface for set up from local network administered by C (below) Ether Net card in same pc(B) connects to a separate wifi router(C) .. which sees this link as its route to the intenet/isp and accepts ip allocation from B .. Router(C) allocates local ip numbers on another domain (say 10.1.1.1-256) Router C supports both wifi and ehternet connections. I suppose B is a sort of router .. except that it is working in reverse to the normal expectation? Hi, guis, As a newbe-to-nominal Linux user am delighted by (live) Knoppix 6.4: it sees Windows' FAT32 partitions by a mere click on its interface and can save files on C:\ without any fuss. Connecting to Broadband is automatic; as fast as in Windows or faster. Such connection seems to mean avoiding known Windows' prerogatives (plus unknown ones) and it may also be possible skirting Windows by saving files of a dedicated DOS partition. Ditar.

fiber attached storage

Hi. I have 3 servers , and 4 fiber cards (2 of infineon with intel chip, and 2 with qlogic chip ) . So what I want to have one server as storage and 2 running esxi, booting over the fiber, off the storage server. I'm looking for a Howto on setting up a storage server that presents storage over fiber. I have worked with Xiotech fiber storage devices, from an administration of resources, so my knowledge of fibre technology is limited. But this is a home project build on donated hardware, so I need to build my own fiber storage server .. I have googled and yet to find a clear howto on this... iSCSI as common storage

Hi. I would like to avoid setting up a file server as back-end to my web server cluster, as this would give a single point of failure. Give we are running a iSCSI array of 8 nodes with redundancy and replication etc, I would like to take advantage of this. It's the first time I'll be working with iSCSI from within Linux. A) is it possible and b) if it is, how do I best configure multiple machine to use the same iSCSI LUN / data store, as a "common share " . I assume I need a more advance file system that ext3. OS may be Windows 98 and also may be loaded with Office 2000. Haven't booted it for a while. This machine is free to a good home. Hi Rod and WLUG fellows - I am a PCBSD (or FreeBSD) user and have attended couples of WLUG activities recently including Monday meetings, Saturday workshops, SFD2008(a)Waikato University, SFD2010(a)Central Plaza and eDay2010. I have for the last few years been using and contributing to FLOSS both on *BSD and Windows, and have also been spreading the word of FLOSS whenever there is "appropriate" chance. For a long time I have usually, if not always, felt that *BSD, Linux or even FLOSS is still giving the general public a wrong impression that these are for geeks but not for the them to use. One example is that all books regarding Linux are titled something like "Building a Linux server system", "Linux systems", "xxx Programming Language Bible" etc whereas undeniably these would scare most general users away. While more general books and online tutorials for general users are coming out nowadays, these are still far less than those technical stuff. Another example is that the term Linux refers not to a OS but to a kernel, whereas general users just don't realise the difference between them nor do they care what they exactly are; all they care is - how to use those common/useful software in their daily lives. This is what the public is interested in as well as in need of the most. Linux? System administrating? Programming? These are definitely useful for techies but sorry most people just don't intend to bother them. As a side note, in NZ there used to be a user group called NZFUG (New Zealand FreeBSD User Group) but apparently they have disbanded years ago, which I believe is due to fail to draw the public's interest mainly for the similar reason. Sadly enough, all official FreeBSD webpage/ftp mirror sites in NZ were also discontinued due to the lack of maintainers for ages. I see WLUG is unfortunately following the same path. WLUG has been holding several interesting talks in the meetings as well as valuable activities, I felt WLUG (and probably other FLOSS-related user groups too) needs to focus more on the general user base. An introduction to Inkscape given by Stephen last month is a good start. I think similar tutorials/seminars about other FLOSS e.g. GIMP, Scribus etc would be helpful for both the user group and the public. While technical skills is an important part of WLUG, I think expanding and promoting FLOSS to a wider audience urgently need to be prioritised - if the user group is still to be continued. I also think that the user group had better not claim something like FLOSS/Linux but instead use the term FOSS as this otherwise would give the public an impression that all these was only for Linux, whereas in fact FLOSS exist on *BSD, Windows and other platforms. That said, by using the term "FLOSS" instead of "FLOSS/Linux" it would be less likely to limit ourselves from the otherwise potential yet wide user base. I was even dreaming that, if I were to lead the WLUG, I would rename the user group to say WFUG (Waikato FLOSS User Group) and merge those FLOSS users at the Waikato or even in NZ from other platforms - regardless of *BSD, Linux, Mac or Windows. Perhaps it is only by combining these sparse forces that could increase the odds to sustain the FLOSS community at Waikato or in NZ in the long run. Regarding the finances, I felt some expenses had not been necessary nor worth the outcomes. Software Freedom Day this year was actually not really successful as people really do not want to be disturbed in the middle of their shopping by someone proposing FLOSS. As for the Internet usage/cost, I think Internet is also not necessary in the Saturday workshops as the workshop shouldn't be a free Internet cafe (another reason is that downloading in NZ is by nature not favourable due to the restriction in the monthly Internet usage policy in NZ). To help visitors install FLOSS/ISOs these could have been prepared on disks in advance rather than repeatedly downloaded during the workshop. Another thing I felt WLUG needs to improve is communication within the user group member as well as with the public. Take eDay2010 for example, some people was told by the user group that he would be assigned the time and tasks by email before eDay whereas ultimately he didn't get any contact from the user group. Communication within the user group needs to be organised and improved. As for the communication with the public, this has largely to do with advertisement. Not many people know about WLUG and the activities the user group has been holding. There are actually many low-cost or even free yet more effective ways to advertise WLUG activities... for instance Facebook, Tweet, or "chain-email" through friends of friends etc. Just my two cents. I am President of the PC Computer Club so I am willing to stand again for Committee only, and only if we can get the support of members. We need a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and 3 committee members to continue as an incorporated society. What do you want WLUG to do in the future? What activities should we focus on? What else should we be doing? What will get your support and continued membership? Should we concentrate mainly on technical skills, or promoting FOSS/Linux to a wider audience, or both? The membership has dwindled somewhat, as have our finances, due to reduced membership and to Software Freedom Day expenses being higher than planned (liability insurance etc). Should we continue as an incorporated society or become an informal group with shared interests or disband altogether? Unless we get enough people coming forward to hold office and continue membership we will have no choice but to disband. For a quorum we need 50% of the membership or 15 members to attend, so come to the AGM which will decide these matters. Let us know what you what you want WLUG to do and what you can do to contribute to the future of WLUG. According to the charter only those people who were paid members in a previous financial year (not necessarily for the 2010 year) and who have signed a membership form for the next financial year will be considered eligible to vote at the AGM. Old computers and Eday

Hello all, I've got two Toshiba Satelite Laptops to give away, both very old. First laptop 8M of RAM. I can get Tom's Rescue Boot Floppy for work on it but haven't manage to get Basic Linux installed though its been a few years since my last attempt. Second laptop 32M of RAM. I can get Damn Small Linux to work on it using a CD drive. The screen is damaged on the right side - about an 8mm strip of black pixels. I also have a desktop computer case that formally housed a Pentium III motherboard circa 2001. You're also welcome to the motherboard but it no longer goes. I've also got some SCSI components and tape drives if anyone is interested. All these will end up at eDay for recycling if no one would like them. Please contact me off list if you're interested. Spontaneous suspend

Hi, I have a laptop running Kubuntu 8.04 and it has begun spontaneously going to sleep a short time after I log in. After resuming everything appears to work fine. If I don't log in then it will sit on the greeter screen without suspending. I suspect there is something in my .kde/ that is doing this. Anyone know what I should be looking for? Let me know if you have had problem playing flash videos at all, I've had a fair few problems with it logging up. I have tried kde, gnome, kdm, gdm, straight X windows without anything, Brand new login with fresh profile etc and still getting the bug. Chrome has its own flash plugin which still has the problem, firefox with standard plugin also has the same bug. basically after about 2 mins it locks up, the active window is still usable (ie a konsole) , and mouse moves but can't click. I can use the keyboard to type but not to navigate alt+tab to other windows etc. I can get to tty1 and back no problems but again not change windows in the window manager. If anyone has got a similar problem, or a fix, let me know. Upgrading to Maverick...

As far as I can tell, Maverick seems to work just fine. However, I haven't installed it yet. Has anyone here got a dual-boot system with Windows 7? I've read about this bug where grub2's bootloader is overwritten after running Windows, and I don't know if it applies to this distribution as well -- I'm rather wary of upgrading (a clean install in this case, as I'm skipping Lucid) as a result. I would like to upgrade, as it finally fixes the inability of my laptop to mute the internal speakers when headphones are plugged in (that's really the major reason why I want to upgrade; the other one is that Karmic's running rather slowly after a year). Funding has been secured from the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund and close to 40 drop-off locations have already been confirmed. We are expecting as many as 50 sites to participate! This year, funding for eDay has been secured by the 2020 Communications Trust. Local eDay events are run by community groups or local authorities. National coordination is provided by the eDay New Zealand (eNZ) Trust, a new independent community trust set up by CANZ members specifically to promote responsible recycling of electronic waste in New Zealand. Remote adminstration

Hello all, Is there a tool in ubuntu that a user can start that reports the real world ip address and configures a home router to open a port to allow remote administration? I have a friend or two for whom it would nice to get them to start a program, report to me the details via MSN or Skype or telephone etc and allow me to log in and fix or make a configuration change to their machine. I know how to set things up using ssh etc but that relies on some initial configuration at the their end. KDE has a nice VNC invite function but it won't do the router config part. It appears the likes of KTorrent and Azuereus have the ability to do some to the router via UPnP to open ports up on the router dynamically so I am guessing all this is possible. Cheers

We'll have the usual tables, power, various ISO's, Internet, coffee and light lunch, etc. If there's something you specifically want to work on please mention it on the mailing list in advance so we can study up beforehand or bring any necessary equipment. Also we're paying a little extra for hall and internet now, so a gold coin donation to help cover these costs would be greatly appreciated.
