Jack is mentioned at: http://jackit.sourceforge.net/docs/faq.php http://jackaudio.org/ I've seen quite a bit of mention of Jack around the place (as well as GStreamer) and haven't noticed PulseAudio much at all. It seems clear that OSS is going away and what Craig says about ESD makes sense as well... Now Alsa is at the kernel level for devices and doesn't seem to face any real competition. How do the other bits fit togther though? router disconnecting

Hi people, okay I had a big crash and lost loads of data in windows plus system got trashed so decided to give ubuntu dapper a go on my laptop. no worries after much hacking away got everything working how I want it. now however there is a problem. I have a dlink dsl-302g modem. now whenever I run the laptop after a few minutes the router disconnects then reconnects and this happens again and again whenever the laptop is on. it doesn't happen with my windows machines and if I turn the laptop off the connection is constant for 24+ hours. I emailed the slingshot help desk and they say it's a line fault and it's going to cost $88 to have it looked at. but it only happens when the laptop is on the network. any ideas about whats happening here? I'm very happy with ubuntu, just frustrated with the disconnects. I have tried a second dsl-302g so it's not the router and the internal network works flawlessly just the internet connection is screwy. Cheers Haldor

Local Linux training

Hi all, My name is Eric, I've been following this list for about two years now but haven't had occasion to actually make a post until now... I've been looking for a training institute which offers a course towards the CompTIA Linux+ certificate. I was offered a scholarship in Auckland for such a course, but I'm really looking for somewhere in Hamilton. My experience with Linux is minimal - I've installed a few older versions of Mandrake in the past, and more recently got most of a server going with Ubuntu. But I still honestly don't really know what I'm doing, and most of the time I rely on programs which feature a GUI. I'd like to get away from that. I've called Hamilton Business School (http://www.hbsc.co.nz/index.asp?PageID=2145824273) who seem to be the only ones in Hamilton offering the course, but their Linux tutor has recently left the company and so they're not offering the course at the moment. Does anyone know of a Hamilton training provider where I could do something along the lines of a 20-week course via Student Loan? Thanks in advance, - Eric Light

Folks, I'm just being lazy here and not looking it up myself. Can anyone tell me a good squid admin tool that allows to alter whitelisted and blacklisted URLs by user/group? I can just alter the config files I know but it'd be nice to have a web front end to it. Would be cool if it has reporting too but that's not a major. Skype working better for Linux

Folks, I'm meant to be making a Skype call at 5 am tomorrow (yeah!!) to talk about Linux but I have had bad experiences with Skype previously with sound working (or more to the point not!) and preferred not to use Windows in case I need to look something up that I'm talking about. Anyway I've now found that Skype for Linux has a new beta out which now uses ALSA by default as the sound system instead of OSS. What this means is that sound seems to "just work" now for me. I am an application packager by trade (MS environment) and the latest version of Wise Package Studio (http://www.wise.com/Products/Packaging/Overview.aspx) supports creation and editing of RPM files. The beauty of this tool is how simple it is to create and deploy consistent applications to large enterprises (we package the application to work consistently on 2k/xp/vista/citrix). I know it is doing nothing that couldn't already be done via a command line packaging tool but a lot of companies have already invested massive amounts of money in Wise infrastructure with delegated rights, deployment systems and reporting and would love to be able to apply those processes to their Linux systems. So now with Wise and Notes I can build 2 (MS/RPM) packages following the same configuration and testing steps and have every user running the same application and configuration while my manager can manager the teams workflows and productivity via the reporting functions. I know most of you will not see it this way, but this is a massive leap forward for Linux in the Standard Operating Environments that I help design and deploy. Lotus Notes is now running on Linux: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060710-7222.html IBM have a stated goal to run much of their business on Linux and since they own Lotus they will have converted this as they probably use heavily. The same ones I used on Breezy. That version number sounds like an Ubuntu kernel. Have you tried with a kernel from http://kernel.org and then using that? It is the default Ubuntu Dapper kernel. I gather compiling custom kernels is not for nube's like me. Replacing FreeS/WAN with a 2.6-kernel-friendly VPN server

I currently have a Debian Woody machine acting as a head-end IPSEC server to three sites with Cisco 837 ADSL routers. Woody is no longer maintained and I would like to upgrade the machine, and get it onto a 2.6 kernel. The IPSEC driver used by FreeS/WAN on 2.4 is klips. FreeS/WAN is no longer maintained, and has forked into OpenSwan and StrongSwan. The 2.6 kernel has its own implementation of IPSEC, called NETKEY, and klips requires a patched kernel, which I would rather not have to maintain, as there is a good IPSEC implementation in the mainline. The standard 2.6 kernel IPSEC model, using the ipsec-tools, lets you do all sorts of things with policies. In the past, I've had an ipsec0 interface, which has been given IP addresses and been able to connect routes to, and hang firewall rules off. I believe NETKEY doesn't give that. The remote sites can be considered 'trusted' insomuch as machines on their LAN are currently routed such they may as well be on the local LAN, and so it wouldn't matter too much that I couldn't apply specific firewall rules. Can anyone advise me on the easiest way to do this? Should I continue using OpenSwan? Is there a good HOWTO for this, or will I be the guy that writes it? (Assume I know everything on http://www.wlug.org.nz/26sec :) Any suggestions? Michal, are you still around, and is this right in your area of expertise? :) Craig

Running ntpdate in ppp/ip-up.d

Hi, I am trying to get ntpdate to run when my dialup link comes up. This box is running Debian/stable. I have put a simple script in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ntpdate : #!/bin/sh /etc/init.d/ntpdate start All this script does is to run /usr/sbin/ntpdate -u -b -s $NTPSERVERS However the script hangs and ps indicates that it is sleeping ( S< ). I have an old fax modem 33k that I would like to set up as a fax. when I run the automatic dectection as a modem it detects the device as /dev/ttyS0 . However when I try it out as a fax it looks for /dev/modem which it does not find and looking in the dev directory it doesn't exist So I was wondering if I should create a file and put symbolic link between the files. But I don't really know how to do this

Software Freedom Day - Public advocacy event

Hi everyone, We've had two successful installfests in the last two years, but this year, especially with the emergence of the Saturday Workshop, it seems have already got Linux installed for all the people we know that know about it. So now it's time to drum up some new interest! One of the things we have wanted to do for a while is a public advocacy event, to be held before the next installfest, so we can tell members of the public that Linux exists, it's not just a "different DOS", and that Free/Open Source Software is available for proprietary operating systems too. Software Freedom Day is an international celebration of FOSS. Now in its third year, SFD 2006 is on September 16th, and it seemed only natural to have our advocacy event on this day. What we envision is a public booth in a high foot traffic area (currently we're hoping to be able to get some space in Centreplace or Downtown Plaza). We can have three or four computers set up to show off some of the latest Linux eye candy, as well as FOSS software on Windows, and some free culture media (such as the recent Pearl Jam video clip that was made available under a Creative Commons license). We will be seeking sponsorship from businesses for giveaways and signage, so if you are interested in supporting the LUG, please get in touch with me. SFD itself is sponsored, so we should be able to receive CDs and t-shirts from them, but we will also need flyers, posters, and other giveaways. There are some advocacy guidelines on the SFD website [1] that are worth reading; the basic gist is that FOSS is not the right answer for every situation, and the positives can be accentuated without 'boring people with ideology' or pretending that FOSS is the only answer. We are looking at holding an installfest a week or two later, and our 2006 AGM soon after that (early October). Samba

Hello all, I am using a Kubuntu computer (dual-boot) on a Windows LAN. I am able to the following: -Use Samba to access Windows shares using my domain name and password (I'm a Domain Admin). -Open Microsoft documents in Open Office (If I open Open Office first and then navigate my way to the share using the "Open" dialog box. -Have the machine show up in the Windows "Microsoft Windows Network" location in My Network Places. It shows up in its own workgroup, even though I listed the name of the domain in the "domain" line in the network preferences setup (KDE System Settings). This is what I would like to able to do; 1- When I click on the Microsoft document directly from the Konqueror window, Open Office displays it start up screen, but never opens. When I open the document from inside Open Office, it opens it, but says "Samba not fully supported. Only a local copy of the file will be created." And then it gives it some jibberish name - like kdefilepickerPX0BQa.doc" How do I get it to directly open the Microsoft document from the Konqueror window? How do I fix the Samba error? 2 - I would like to be able to RDP/VNC into the Linux box from Windows. I have a VNC viewer and a putty client. Both of these, as well as Windows "Remote Desktop Connection", all give me the "Connection refused" error. How do I fix this? 3 - I would like to share some folders on the Linux box to be accessible from Windows. I can see the Linux computer in the computer list, but when I click on it, it comes up with a login box. When I type my Linux user name and password (which is the same as my Windows variants), it does not accept the authentication. This never happened when I was running Ubuntu 5.04. The file system was just shared - I didn't set anything up or install any packages. Any help appreciated! Hohua

Dapper distro (64bit)

Hi All, I successfully downloaded and installed the new Ubuntu Dapper and have so far managed to get some of my media(Mpeg and wmv) to work plus flash player. However when I try to play a DVD it suggests I may not have permission. In properties it is a root only file so how do I change this please? Regards John

Hello, I tried upgrading Kubuntu Breezy to Dapper using the "alternative CD" It didn't work particulary well and so I looked at kubuntu.org for information on what to do. The upshot is, in the words of the website, that I have "hosed" my Kubuntu install. Naturally enough I didn't do a backup before had because everything that I had done with Kubuntu in the past had worked fine. I have Suse10 installed on other partitions and I can happily see my kubuntu partitions so the file systems aren't corrupt, its just that Kubuntu won't boot anymore. I'll happily resign myself to a fresh install of Kubuntu Dapper except the only data I don't know how to retrieve is information stored in my phpwiki that relies on MySQL for the content storage. I'd forgotten I had it on my machine but now that I have remembered it I'd really like it back. Is my data recoverable from MySQL? I don't mind if I have to cut and paste everything back into the wiki. It doesn' contain heaps of data but it does contain some techobabble gems and I would like to recover them if possible. Is it doomed?

Hello, I was wondering if people might care to comment on their experiences with soundcards and linux support. I have a Pentium III Coppermine on a motherboard with an onboard sound card. lspci> Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 21) To date the sound card has worked fine playing ogg files and mp3's. However, where it seems to struggle is with programs like Skype and Openwengo, two VOIP applications. I believe it has something to do with operating in full duplex ie it can't record and play at the same time (I don't have Windows to test this theory) and/or the state of Alsa support for the card is such hardware mixing (which I don't think the card supports) is the only viable option for using these programs I was wondering if people might be able to recommend a PCI sound card that is well supported by/for Linux.

There are many reasons that WLUG recommend Ubuntu as a distribution for new and experiences Linux users alike. The one I'd like to point out today is the excellent documentation that is available. http://help.ubuntu.com/ has PDF and HTML versions of guidebooks for the new 6.06 release, covering all variants (GNOME, KDE, XFCE), as well as Ubuntu Server and packaging. The documentation is available under the GNU Free Documentation License, so you can download it and print it yourself, as well as distribute it freely. A company called Lulu are making printed versions available by money-and-postage (http://www.lulu.com/ubuntu-doc) but I imagine shipping to New Zealand would be prohibitive. If enough people are interested, WLUG could investigate having some copies printed and bound, and made available to members at cost. Craig

To the WLUG, Howdy! Here's my first question. (BTW I am a novice Linux/ubuntu user -- dual boot and work with Windows networks) I am a Domain Admin trying to access Windows shares ( I have full access). That works fine. I've been using OpenOffice to open Microsoft documents, edit them, and save changes. This has worked fine for 2 weeks. Now, when I try to open these documents, the OpenOffice program starts launching, but never opens the document (or OpenOffice itself). Some discussions have come about adding another server to reduce the pressure on our existing server. I don't generally make any of the decisions regarding our computer network but a suggestion was made regarding a program/server/technology called openfiler. Given that I am the known open source advocate around here, the question was asked, what did I know about it and did anyone in the wlug have any experience of using it. I assumed it was a software package but its seems is a customized version of a Ret Hat derivate CentOS. http://www.openfiler.org Having a Linux server on the network would definitely be a foot in the door for Linux based software within our company but it would good if the first experience within the company was positive and straightforward. Any comments or does openfiler provide a nice gui install for setting up a network server that could also be acheived using other modern distro? Cheers Chris

I was reading the cnet article on the need for a mail client to push forward DESKTOP LINUX *E-mail will be the most significant factor governing the uptake of Linux on the desktop, according to a new study. * The Desktop Linux Client Survey 2005, released this week by the Open Source Development Labs, found that the lack of a powerful e-mail application could hinder the adoption of Linux on the desktop. Is it just the calender? is it notes. I have tried, and hated outlook, probably as I use just e-mail and dont like the complexity of all the other things, but what would happen in an enterprise situation. If you understand this article, can you explain what the novell and mozilla offerings will mean, and will this be the outlook killer. What does outlook do that so vital? Is this another case of its not the same, or are we really missing out on something? any enterprise experince that can help a tech like me understand this ? Is there a really good app for this, could something be done to solve this. After all e-mail is the number 1 app for the net, search is 2 and then web surfing. 2 and 3 are fine, are we missing the boat on 1? I thinks its sufficiently linux related. do we have the Guru's in the lug that could solve this?

Hi again Aristotle. All is, I believe, now resolved. Your latest script didn't work as you'd intended. Each time xmms finished its chore, it sat there without closing. As there were two wma test files to be converted, that meant that xmms had to be closed twice manually before the script finished. (When, however, the script was helped in that way, it ultimately produced two perfect mp3 test files.) I don't know that I'm expressing this properly, but what I had found by trial and error with my script was that the "xmmsctrl quit" command didn't seem to do anything unless there'd been an antecedent "xmmsctrl launch" command; it wasn't enough merely to have earlier started xmms by typing its own name, followed by a reference to a file to be played. When I added to your latest script, immediately before the line "xmms "$src"", the line "xmmsctrl launch", then the script ran from beginning to end without interruption, with xmms opening and closing at the appropriate points. At the same time, by running and rerunning the script and checking the results, I found that the script didn't do its job properly if, when it ran, there was already in the .xmms directory a file called xmms.m3u, which, as I understand it, is a playlist file. I therefore added to the line "xmmsctrl launch" the word "clear" and that put an end to that problem, although if with any potential adverse consequences, I'm not now aware. You asked me whether I had MPlayer. The answer's no. I'm doing all this on an ancient laptop running DSL. I tried to get MPlayer to run on it, but it wouldn't for some reason I can't now remember. In any event, even if it would, it'd be very cramped, given the ancient laptop's specifications. You also raised the issue of changing the script so that it would convert other audio file formats as well. I believe I understand how that could be done, but the circumstances in which I'm struggling with all this are peculiar. I gave the laptop to the son of friends and he's the one who asks me for things he wants to be able to do. I then try to work out (or, to be more accurate, try to get others to work out!) how to do them. The only kind of file he says he wants to convert to mp3 is wma, so, at least for now, the script can be used as it is. My warmest thanks for all the help you've given me with this. I'm not sure if it's a setup problem or a protocal problem--I thought I had set up my modem and driver, but when it connects from the terminal (just after it's sending my password), this type of message comes up: --> Don't know what to do! Hi Aristotle. It was very generous of you to take so much time over "my" script, which, as I mentioned earlier, was almost entirely a mere cobbling together by me of bits and pieces which I'd taken from others. Given that you'd created an alternative script, I took the liberty of trying it out. Having saved it and made it executable by all, I then tried to run it in a terminal window. The directory in which I was when I did so contained two .wma files, Beethoven1.wma, which was a re-named file I'd copied over from my Windows computer, and Beethoven2.wma, which was just a copy of Beethoven1.wma, created so that I could test what happened when I tried to convert multiple files from wma to mp3. This is what happened. I got the following output: "Beethoven1.wma => Beethoven1.wma.wav Could not find "Beethoven1.wma.wav". Beethoven2.wma => Beethoven2.wma.wav" and then the graphical representation of the xmms player appeared on the screen, without any activity being apparent. After some time when nothing had happened, I tried to close that representation, but its close box wouldn't respond. I then closed the terminal window, upon which the xmms window closed too. I then opened xmms and checked the output plugin situation. I found that the output plugin was Disk Writer, which I'd expected, since the script hadn't had the chance to restore the OSS plugin. If what I've reported above suggests to you some tiny glitch in your script and you don't feel that you've spent too much time on it already, I'd be grateful to hear what amendment should be made to it. Thank you to all those who took the trouble to reply to my post. Further consideration convinced me that I needed an application additional to xmms to do what I ultimately wanted to do. (What I ultimately wanted to do was to be able to convert files in .wma format to .mp3 format.) That additional application was xmmsctrl and it worked to close xmms. The script I was working on is now in the following form and does do the necessary conversion: #### #!/bin/bash sed -i "s/libOSS.so/libdisk_writer.so/g" ~/.xmms/config for i in *.wma do filename=`basename "$i" .wma` echo "Converting $i to .wav" xmmsctrl launch xmms "$i" while `xmmsctrl playing`; do sleep 1 done xmmsctrl quit lame "${i/wma/wav}" "${i/wma/mp3}" && rm -f ${i/wma/wav} done sed -i "s/libdisk_writer.so/libOSS.so/g" ~/.xmms/config #### Everything of any worth in the script has been derived from others, but I'm sure that the way in which I've put those things together breaks most, if not all, the rules about correct script writing. I have an icon for xmms on my desktop. I click on the icon; xmms opens in its own little window. I open a terminal. I type in it kill -9 $(pidof xmms) and press Enter. The xmms window closes. I have a bash script. A line in it runs xmms, at which point xmms's little window opens and converts a .wma file to a .wav file. The next line in the script says kill -9 $(pidof xmms), but it doesn't work to close the xmms window. That window stays open until I click on the close box in the top right of the window. Why doesn't the kill command work in the second case when it works in the first?

DSE did not tell me that it would work they said that it should, if not right now then at a future time when the firmware became available. You probably can still get the wireless to work by using a card (maybe dse would help you with that, saves them getting a whole computer back) until the new version is on stream. I had a similar drama with my laptop and broadcom wlan. After trying a howto off the web and seeking advice on this list I have elected to wait for the final of dapper drake to come on stream before attempting to get my wlan going. Fedora Core 5 problems?

Recently I upgraded to Fedora Core 5. Some things I like, some I don't, but that's usual when you have an OS upgrade (or replacement). This time around, there seems to be a few more problems. First problem was with yum and updates. pup (software updater) wouldn't run. Solution to that was in the FAQ - a replacement yum.conf file. Yum Extender did work, but there was a fair bit of guessing as to which repositories to use (I'm not a Linux expert!). Following software updates I did on Wednesday, cups refused to start (cups was among the updates). Remote assistance from a family member (he likes puzzles!) gave me a work around - involved changing ownership of files and changes to cupsd.conf, and then running cupsd in foreground. Adobe Reader no longer runs - but I haven't bothered to chase that one up as there are alternatives. Anyway, I'm not asking for assistance. Just want to know if anyone else has run into these problems. I couldn't find anything on the Net. Any comments? I'm tempted to try Ubuntu 6.06 in the near future. Michael
