Thanks very much to David and Bruce for your replies. @ David: the modem is a Belkin ADSL2+ modem, which I believe is available only here in Australia. It was supplied to me by my ISP. (I took the path of least resistance on that!) @ Bruce: your reply prompted me to look at the fine manual that came with the modem. There's a section in it called "Setting MAC address filtering" which seems to allow me to do the sort of thing you're suggesting. I really should've looked there first, shouldn't I? How to mount a usb drive at boot time

Hi, I have a usb drive that I would like to use for automatic backup and I'd like for it to be mounted at boot time and treated the same as any other disk. I found these instructions which describe exactly what I want to do... <http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/10/07/suse-automatically-mount-usb-hard-dri…> However I'm running Ubuntu feisty and those instructions don't work properly for this distro. During boot the fsck stage fails because the disk isn't mounted yet (Well I think that's what's happening). After boot up manually running 'mount -a' mounts the drive as expected. Anyone know how to get this working? Or is there an alternative approach? I figure I could just run mount -a in rc.local but then how would the fsck get to run every nth mount? Changing addresses

My modem is plugged into an Ethernet switch. The Ethernet card in my computer and my printer are each plugged into the switch. My modem has the address internally of 10.1.1. My printer's usually 10.1.1.2. My computer's usually 10.1.1.3. However, recently on a number of occasions, I've discovered my printer or computer has a different address. No doubt, some command will tell me the current addresses of things plugged into the switch, but I don't know which. Could someone enlighten me as to the command? Also, is there some way to force my printer and computer to keep their usual addresses permanently? Otherwise, when I discover that my printer isn't working or that my firewall's blocking connections, I have to change the relevant settings temporarily to match the different numbers, which is annoying. Configuring monitor in Ubuntu

Folks, I'm working on Ubuntu 7.10 (beta) on a PC which I must say is quite nice and Dad is also working on Ubuntu 7.04 boxes and we have an issue with resolution. Our PCs seem to not pick up the capabilites of the monitor and lock down the modes you can choose from Preferences, Screen Resolution I can't find a graphical box to alter the monitor characteristics. I can either edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf or type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and it fixes the issue. Is there a nice graphical way I can do this so that I can tell others as this is not the easiest to tell other users... Hi WLUG! :) I've been "lurking" on the list for a few weeks now, and figured it was about time I spoke up and introduced myself... My name is David Young. I'm a South African Linux Geek, and I run a small consulting company over here called "Funky Penguin". For the past three years, we've been assisting clients with Open Source systems, developments, and customizations. I've subscribed to this list because my wife and I are giving very serious consideration to immigrating to your fine country. (South Africa is not the safest place to start a family). I'd want to ply my trade as a consultant over there, while continuing to manage my fledgling company back in SA. I enjoy working with technology in general, specifically open-source software, and if you asked me to define my specialties, I'd have to say : mySQL / PHP development and customization ( http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=wp-phplist - although it's not my favorite pastime), network and open source systems setup, wireless hotspots (working on a pay-for-play model to resell your connection to your neighbors / customers), and (really esoteric) jabber logging ( http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=jabber+bandersnatch) The wife and I are coming over there for a month in August, to get a "feel" for the place, before making our final, life-altering decision. I'm hoping to make friends and contacts on this list, and to establish some "street cred". June 24th will see the NZOSS elect a new President. The AGM will be held across the country with venues in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch connected by Internet Conference. Vik Olliver and Don Christie will be running for President. Both candidates are very well respected in the open source community. The AGM will be an opportunity not only to do the "business" of the NZOSS in terms of elections, but also to catch up with each other and get some energy going in each Region. Hi everyone, Is there anyone in the Hamilton area who could spare some time (in person) to help a linux newbie? I've been dabbling with a new computer, and I've done everything I needed to do with the exception of RAID-1 and DHCP. I have a feeling I've also stuffed up something, as I've got an external eSATA hard drive (for backups) which doesn't auto-mount, and I can't figure it out. I'm sorry to say I'm a bit tight on the old wallet this week, but anyone who lends a hand will get a nice cup of coffee, and their choice of a couple classic linux books I've got hanging around. I live in the Hillcrest area, but I'm quite happy to meet elsewhere if desired. More details available on request. :-) Thanks in advance! - Eric

NZOSS AGM

June 24th will see the NZOSS elect a new President. The AGM will be held across the country with venues in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch connected by Internet Conference. Vik Olliver and Don Christie will be running for President. Both candidates are very well respected in the open source community. The new President will be challenged by several projects such as ongoing patent opposition against Microsoft's XML Word Processing patent, lobbying against DRM restrictions in law, supporting open source in education and promoting open source events. Don Christie: Don is a founder and director Catalyst IT Limited, a New Zealand based software development company. Catalyst specialise in providing open source software solutions to the education sector, corporates and government agencies in New Zealand and round the world. He has lived and worked in three continents. He has specific interest in technology that empowers and enables grass roots organisations and business to extend their potential. He is also a member of the NZ Institute of International Affairs. Don says that "I would not be putting myself forward for this role if I were not convinced that the NZOSS has already achieved a great deal and has an important role to play in the future. FOSS is much more than a philosophy, it runs the heart of communications and IT round the world. It is used by start-ups round the world who attract billions of dollars of investment every year. It is core to the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of developers and companies that employ them. The philosophy of FOSS has now extended to many walks of life, from publishing to architecture through the use of Creative Commons type licences. This is in many sense purely an issue of history repeating itself as we once again discover the value of community over the individual." He is keen to start attracting businesses to become members of the NZOSS and expand its reach beyond the current membership base. He believes that many businesses do not realise just how much they need to protect the systems they have built or run from predatory attacks. He is keen to carry that message through to this audience. He comments that "I see no reason why most of the IT businesses in New Zealand would not have an affiliation with the NZOSS at one level or another." Vik Olliver: Vik Olliver is a software developer from Waitakere. Born in the UK, he emigrated to NZ in 1994 with his wife Suz and daughters Kate & Tamara. He has worked on projects ranging from implantable heart monitors to launching satellites, and from urban self-sufficiency to hydroponics in moonrock. He has also done enough journalism to get the shakes if he doesn't write articles occasionally. Vik is a staunch supporter of Open Source, Open Standards and an Open society. He has persuaded companies and retailers to pick up the Open Source banner, represented New Zealand as a regional delegate at LinuxConf Australia, and took part in the reviewing of OSS guidelines for the NZ government. Software Freedom Day

Folks, The committee have been looking at what we can do to promote this event this year and have come up with some ideas but we need your input. What we are looking at is a public display at the library and also an event like we had in Centreplace last year, followed by an installfest. We have people on the committe who are willing to organise the library display and the installfest. However if we are to do an event like Centreplace we need some volunteers who are prepared to lead it. Committee members are prepared to help but want somebody to lead it. Microsoft is starting to rattle some sabres: An excerpt from http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2007/05/28/100033867/ (Found at lwn.net) But he does break down the total number allegedly violated - 235 - into categories. He says that the Linux kernel - the deepest layer of the free operating system, which interacts most directly with the computer hardware - violates 42 Microsoft patents. The Linux graphical user interfaces - essentially, the way design elements like menus and toolbars are set up - run afoul of another 65, he claims. The Open Office suite of programs, which is analogous to Microsoft Office, infringes 45 more. E-mail programs infringe 15, while other assorted FOSS programs allegedly transgress 68. This could be interesting as it's a largely untapped marked so players like Microsoft may not be dominant from the start. Three years on, it is clear that new types of device - small, handheld, graphical tablets which are Internet-enabled are going to change the way we communicate and collaborate. These devices place new demands on open source software and require innovative graphical interfaces, improved power management and better responsiveness. Intel, specifically, have announced a new low-power processor and chipset architecture which will be designed to allow full internet use on these mobile Internet devices. To fulfil the aims of our mission and in response to the technical challenges that these devices pose, we are announcing the Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project. We will start more detailed planning at the Ubuntu Developer Summit next week in Seville and the first release of this edition will be in October with Ubuntu 7.10. If you are interested in the project, please get involved. We will be working through our normal development processes on Launchpad, the developer mailing lists and IRC. Firefox attack

Hi All. Recently my firefox browser was sneakily attacked by a "systemdoctor/drivecleaner" scam programme that gave a bogus harddrive scan and reported a bogus outcome then locked the browser unless the home site was visited. I fond out that I need to install Adblock into firefox then block adbrite by: *.adbrite.com/* If any one is aware of more of these nasties that can be simply eradicated by Adblock please feal free to share. Given that most of the list are IT experts, this will come as a history lesson I guess. However if it can help one person it will be worthwhile posting. Regards John

Ubuntu's reputation dented?

I've had a few problems since upgrading from Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.04 I'm still researching what to do about them. It seems I'm not the only one with problems. The ones I've got are: 1. USB flash drive is no longer auto-mounted. System message log notes insertion and removal. 2. System doesn't appear to recognise any media in DVD/CD drive. 3. Swap file has to be mounted manually. The last problem may go back to 6.10 ... it was because of that problem that I decided to upgrade. Seems that the swap file was corrupted a while back. Has anyone else done the upgrade? Did you experience any of the above problems? Michael

Hello, I am interested in buying a laptop. A key requirement would be that it ran Linux (Kubuntu) smoothly and that all the hardware was supported, not neccessarily by *open* source drivers as binary drivers would be okay eg NVIDIA drivers. I would be interested to read comments on what would might be a good model or vendor and advice on hardware options that definitely struggle to work? I realise that there are all sorts of websites for advice but sometimes the models aren't readily avaiable here. If someone has recently bought a laptop that they are really happy with Linux wise, I'd be interested to know. Options I am interested in moderately large screen, nvidia graphics card, intel duo and linux support camera and wifi. Thoughts, comments appreciated. Chris

Hi People, My web browser is doing some odd things. If I am using webmail (clear.net) I can usually read mail and browse the inbox but if I choose to reply or new it goes into "connecting to" mode and stalls. My option seems to be to copy my text to an editor, close, re-open Firefox and sign into my mailbox again then paste and post. A similar thing happens when I am browsing forums, I can read them but if I choose to reply the stall thing happens again and even the copy paste thing is not a success. Google did not help me that much though it is likely I was looking in the wrong place (Firefox stalling) Any help would be appreciated. Regards John Grrr! It has happened with this post:-(

Linux Mobile Internet Devices

No word yet on a price of the Intel/Red Flag device (I've put a giant "wanted to buy" for these specific devices on a big import/export site - shall see what that turns up). I can get Nokia N770 internet tablets at reasonable prices (cheaper than I can buy them in Finland!). I've asked for prices on other models too. GPS unit is also available for those interested. Sadly the n-series tablets are not *strictly* a Linux-device, and may not be as flexible as the MID at the link below... or... maybe they are - they seem to be Linux-based. I don't know how you guys classify these things, and I'm not interested in starting a war about it - or am I. Do these devices have to be pure GNU/Linux, free software, GPL license code etc for you to drool over them or what? Any criteria that needs to be fulfilled for you to just go "I want one" as below? I like the idea. I was unable to find, however, an actual release date - the articles are all future-tense. Hopefully the OS is available in English. I'm trying to find a vendor (in China or HK) to negotiate an export deal with to Europe as we speak - I've been wanting devices like these for about 18 months to facilitate a tourism project - if the price is right, I'm want many of them! Admittedly, DSE could probably get a better price than we could at the end of the day, but I can hopefully respond to the market faster than they can. I'll let you know what I find out and thus the plausibility of importing some to NZ. Widelands editor

Hi All I am playing around with the terrian editor in widelands and am surprised to find that there is no Headquarters supplied.(the default building for each of the players) I have tried save the new work in /usr/share/games/widelands/maps but it still does not give me a HQ. Anyone have some helpful thoughts on this? The reason I am doing this is that I am really new to any form of gaming and want to give myself some "extra" resources so the game lasts longer before I kill it with some basic provisioning error. Two CUPS questions [re-sent, because I did something wrong with my earlier post]

I hope to get a Canon PIXMA MP160 all-in-one printing with a computer running Damn Small Linux ("DSL") and CUPS. Right now, I have access to neither the computer nor the printer, but hope to get guidance in advance about the matter. Last weekend, in the absence of access to the computer running DSL and CUPS, I was able to get the MP160 printing with a computer running Fedora Core 3 and CUPS. I did that by installing two RPMs supplied by Canon, which it said were for Fedora Core 6. Due to RAM and storage constraints, I can't hope (by, for example, using alien) to install the entire contents of those two RPM packages on the computer running DSL. However, among the installed files from the two RPMs were: (1) a .ppd file; (2) a filter file; and (3) a backend file. The .ppd file included a line referring to the filter file. I have two questions: 1. Is there any chance that by copying all three of the files I've mentioned to the appropriate directories on the computer running DSL, I could get the MP160 to print with that computer? 2. If not, could I edit the .ppd file to remove the reference to the filter file and copy only the edited .ppd file to the computer running DSL, relying on the fact that default CUPS filter and backend files are already on that computer? recovering from "rm -rf"

While upgrading my Ubuntu machine i needed to manually remove /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/dbus, but i accidently removed /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages instead. I was safe as i could ask dpkg which packages had files in those directories (with -S) and reinstall them. If someone else needs to do this, the command is: sudo apt-get --reinstall install `dpkg -S /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages | cut -d: -f1 | sed 's/,//g'` (changing the directory name, of course)

Help for locking myself out of administrating machine

Somehow my graphical administration on one of my machines has gone screwball. I entered a root password incorrectly under Desktop, Administration, Networking and now it won't come right even after rebooting and using correct password. I'm getting The entered password is invalid as a dialog title and a message box saying Check that you typed it correctly and that you haven't activated the "caps lock" key This occurs after successfully authenticating and even if I try the following at command line: gksu network-admin sudo network-admin kdesu network-admin or su (or sudo -s) followed by network-admin I presume this is some sort of lock that I've put in place by doing it wrongly but how do I fix? Googled for the error and didn't get much useful back (apart from a few people who had done the same thing!)
