Hey Daniel Thanks for the great advise on ic/ppp settings. I had my old win 98 machine that I do my maths work on and it had a modem, so i thought id give it a bash with your instructions in your emails. I had to consult a website http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics98, turns out that I had to install netBEUI and install ICS from the win 98 add new programs menu, but once that was done, my linux acer and my linux dell both had good connections. I had to remove the static IP address in my Vista machines network card settings, but once i had, it connected too. So thank you for all your help, and to the other members of WLUG who helped me out. Now I have to find an old PCMCIA network card for my old Dell 133 Laptop, or a serial network connection if there is such a thing Cheers all Glenn.

It could be something to do with setting the software repositories correctly before starting these managers up. I think there should be something called "Sources" or similar on the system menu. It may need these set right before first starting. Maybe just starting is sufficient to get some basic settings and repositories but needs to be restarted before they become effective. Ubuntu failing to install/work

Hi All, Have tried to install Ubuntu 8.10 desktop 386 with a number of different c/d's First a rc then two final desktops including trying the live versions also an alternate install. They all have a common problem, booting to the welcome/login then crashing to a black or plain light brown blank screen The install appears to slow down as it progresses, this is particularly true of the alternate, the last few files take a long time to config/install. I thought that it may be a memory problem and increased the ram to 700+ however that made no difference at all. Someone suggested that my psu may be faulty but I have installed puppy linux in two or three times without a problem. Knoppix live works just fine Any help would be appreciated. Regards John

Hmmn! Linux mint installed without error though it did report the partition made by the Ubuntu install was corrupt. I wonder if this is a random bug??? John

Hi Again I managed to get Ibex to install and run on an old amd duron with no real problems so maybe this latest Ubuntu IS a bit of a lottery with older machines. I will try to install Linux mint on the other machine just to see what happens... John -

hey all I am trying to get my pppoe working on my desktop computer, everytime I unlock the network settings, and check the pppoe option, as fast as I select pppoe, it unchecks the box. here is the output from lspci relating to my ethernet controller: glenn(a)glenn ~$lspci 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 16) Now I can see my other computers but I cant access them, althought I can ping them. Not sure if this is helpful or not but Clearnet had a recent network collapse resulting in PPP dropping out completely to a large number of users. Hey Daniel, sorry to be unspecific, what I mean by "I cant access them" if that I see the icons for the machines on my network, but when I click on those machines, no files or directories of the machines that I am trying to access appear, like what you would see if you had a properly configured and set up network. Im using, or atleast trying to configure my pppoe to access the internet via my windows laptop, because the modem I have, according to the folks at linmodems.org, does not have 64bit support, and probably never will have, since the folks that manufacture my modem are not willing to release thier source code so that linux developers can compile drivers needed for its operation. As you will recall, I have a usb modem, which also doesnt have driver support, and is thus unavailable to use under linux. Also, with my Acer being only a couple of months old, it does not have a serial port that I may try connecting a serial modem to, so that option is also unavailable to me. I will install Samba on my Acer Linux desktop, and have already enabled sharing on my folders on my Windows Vista laptop, however, the problem that I have is that under Heron, I cannot get my pppoe settings to 'stick' as it were, as soon as I click on them, they deselect themselves and uncheck the pppoe box. This is what I am trying to investigate the cause of. This is all very frustrating but I am not going to give up because I believe in the principles behind Linux and the open source software community, I just have to do a heck of a lot of learning FAST. Help wanted - music video clip or animation

I made a silly parody song about geeks/computers/etc . Im so-so at singing, slightly worse at editing that with music. I made a parody song however which some people have said is funny and i should have some sort of 'video clip' to go with it on youtube. I tried to get my Asus laptop (Vista) to talk to my Acer (Linux Ubuntu 8.04) but no joy. I can ping 192.168.0.1, which is the Asus's network address, but cant see a network connection in the places>network folder. I've tried both DHCP and Roaming. Hey all Thanks for all the good advise. You are all right, I am flogging a dead horse trying to get this internal PCI Modem working in my machine with 64Bit architecture. Could i instead of trying to get Ubuntu to talk with my pci modem, try and establish an internet connection through my Windows Vista Laptop via. my ethernet card and a 100Mb switch? The switch shows there is a connection between the two machines, as yet I have not configured a network as I don't know how. By and by, does anyone want my PCI modem? It works fine with Vista, and I'll give it away, heck, Ill even post it to you for free just to get rid of the thing.... Glenn.

I think slamr is a dodgy package ... I've gotten the same errors on Tosh. A-106 laptop running Xubuntu. It's got its knickers in a twist trying to work with some level stuff Windows uses for the software modem. Hi All I got it wrong, just did some reading at Wikipedia and I have got a PCI modem and not a serial modem..apologies. I have a SpeedCom HP156M3 Internal PCI 2 Wire ISDN Modem. I did a google search but couldnt find any drivers for Linux. Does anyone know where I might find some, or is the modem just a winmodem and thats all? Glenn Morrissey.

hey all thanks for all the great information. I had a serial modem that came installed in the machine when I bought it a couple of months ago. Its a brand new computer and I couldnt get scanmodem to detect it, thats why I tried to install a USB modem instead. I can supply output of the scanmodem program if required. Thanks all Glenn.

Hi there all Is anyone here able to help me configure a Lucent external usb modem? I know that Heron detects that there is a device, because when I run lsusb: lsusb Bus 001 Device 011: ID 047e:2892 Agere Systems, Inc (Lucent) and I have tried to run modprobe: sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x47e product=0x2892 but nothing appears to be happening??? I dont have a device manager installed, like I do on my Ubuntu 7.04 release, although I have downloaded the gnome device manager (gnome-device-manager-0.1) I wouldnt have a clue on how to install the package, remembering that I dont have internet access on this machine makes it a real pain, because there are drivers that I need for the display that I dont have. My querry on this matter is on the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5987714#post5987714 Please bear in mind that I am a complete novice with Linux and Ubuntu, but really REALLY want to get a working knowledge of it. Experienced this system on multiple different Singapore Airline flights recently. Generally fairly good but multiple machines needing rebooting - seemed to be the proprietary system locking up rather than Linux as you could see the Linux kernel booting just fine! Systems were very slow on older planes 747/777 but faster on A380 but still some parts had badly written software as some parts were fast and some parts were slow (30 second wait after pressing a key). A380 has full OpenOffice installed and a USB socket so you can work on documents on your USB key. Things we learned *A resources page/board for those interested in future information. *The value of having someone welcoming people to the event. *The value of having the internet available. *Perhaps a notice board/ white board for any rescheduling issues. *Perhaps some configuration work could have been done earlier *Wireless AND wired access is useful to those wishing to hook up laptops. Number one trouble shooting with laptops is wireless issues so wired access is a prerequisite for troubleshooting some issues. *Have a session demonstrating the OpenDisc (on a windows computer), highlighting the programs on it. Thing we could do better or ideas for discussion *Maybe a local ubuntu respository for any install work to avoid hammering the internet connection. (might also save embarrassment when doing how to install) *Windows machines demonstrating the true cross platform nature of many free software projects *Demonstrating MythTV showing maturity of application. Is anyone here from the central Hamilton West area? I /did/ have someone to take a small load (two monitors, a few PSUs and a few other small bits and pieces), but he won't be in Hamilton tomorrow. This is probably rather late notice, but then I didn't have much notice of changes of plan. If I can't get rid of any of this stuff now, where can I dispose of it later? I've no idea. Sandy

Software Freedom Day

Just thought I'd drop a line to the list as a way of introducing myself and to acknowlege the effort the group obviously put into SFD last weekend. I'm a web developer type who's been working with open-source tech for many years now, some of the Uni folk on the list will know me, I saw a few familiar faces in S-block on Saturday. I was really impressed with what you'd put together. I took a couple of friends along who are also techies, none of us are hard-core Linux desktop users (yet) but two of us have been using *nix back-ends for some time now. Was great to be met on the door (sorry didnt catch the guy's name, my mate Matt used to work with him at Telecom), getting a warm reception at an event like that is so important, especially so I imagine for those who may not be as familiar with all the lingo etc and feeling a bit intimidated by all the Alpha-Geeks. Awesome to see the number of folk there who weren't afraid to be asking questions and finding out about stuff that they could see themselves personally using. Its easy to give people too much info, but from what I saw the speakers and folks at the demos in the reception area had the balance right, not too much, not too condescending. One thing that did strike me was the fact that a lot of the attendees were pretty much already FOSS converts, not too many total noobies, I guess it's tough raising awareness of an event and topic like this, but I wonder if maybe being on the edge of town (ie at the Uni) might not be too far away for some people, would it be better in a central location where casual bypassers could be tempted to pop in and find out whats goin on? All in all, it was very well done, I look FWD to popping along to the next one :-) Dean Stringer

Anyone intending to show, the tech demo for Yo Frankie (project apricot) released not quite a week ago, its a project being worked on by blender and crystal space. Its intended to be an open-source game to compete with commercial games. Im no "gamer" but im impressed by the effort and am now downloading said demo for a look.

Hi all, just a quick email about software freedom day (bcc's to random people who may or may not be on the WLUG mailing list, sorry if you got this twice) Bryce is a little worried that at the moment we only have three or four people involved in SFD who really grok Free/OSS software and have a broad knowledge of what's available in various areas. So my first request is that some of the less active members and past members who are able to confidently talk to the public about Free and Open Source software do come along on SFD and give us a hand. RSVP so I know who's coming and don't have to stress about this. Or if you wanted to be more involved in SFD planning, put your hand up now! We've got less than two weeks to get everything sorted and could really use some help. I'm planning to follow up with PBTech about them lending us some nice computers for the day to demo stuff on. Alternatively, would WAND group be able to find some suitable demo machines? It might be easiest if we make use of something that's already on campus. Alternatively, we may end up relying on WLUG members to bring their personal machines. I'd rather avoid that though. Anything else that runs GNU/Linux or embedded Linux? Lindsay is hopefully providing Linksys phones and webcams for the day, and running an Asterisk PABX, hopefully we can link up with other groups during their SFD events. Also if you have a eeepc or similar linux-based 'nettop', bring it along. They're cool and we should let lots of people see how cool they are. And of course, thanks you to those who are already helping. I really hope it all comes together and we have a great SFD! -- This email is for the intended recipient only. Does anyone have: a) a USB steering wheel b) a MIDI keyboard (& a PC that'll talk to it) c) digital video cameras (the higher quality the better, and the more the better come to that; USB-capable ideally) the first'll be good for showing off Torcs, the second for keeping any musicians' attention, the third for recording Nandor's talk. (I'm entirely happy with editing say three roughly-synced video streams on the day while being shoulder-surfed then uploading to YouTube. I tried, work's are all in Sydney.) if there's *any* chance of any of these being there on Saturday, they'd be grand. as for other instruments, I'm thinking of packing a guitar + multi- effects and bringing them in if there's anything to attach them to (and anyone interested). can't commit to my laptop being any use: Audacity will record single tracks to an empty file, but then refuses to even recognise the microphone to record any more. (bizarre, that) (this... also means that the demo Audacity file on the poster -- which, yes, really *is* tracks from a Hammond through a Leslie, a guitar, another guitar, a Hammond through a plain speaker, and a piano, all recorded wild and independently, with a drum solo stolen from the web, all sliced up randomly based on what looked pretty -- is a *truly* hellish din, not helped at all by Audacity repeatedly crashing in horror while trying to make it. I'll try not to play it too much.) butting (mad science isn't just for Christmas, you know)

Preparing for SFD

Hi all, The publicity's up, the word's out, the gremlins have been beaten senseless with 4x2s and the usual appalling jokes, and now it's time to get ready for the day. A quick recap (since I've lost track of what's happened on which list): * we're putting on a bunch of (short, hourly) presentations at S Block on Saturday the 20th * Nandor Tanzcos is opening * we're hoping to see a whole bunch of people wanting to know more about F/OSS software * preparations are under way to kit the place out with PCs and have them doing hopefully-interesting stuff * there's also the -tiniest- suggestion of a hint that we might be implying that we're there to help answer questions, solve problems, and help out installing stuff. The only remaining worries now are: * nobody comes * EVERYBODY comes It's the latter I'm thinking about. We need to be sure of a core of people who'll be there on the day (it doesn't have to be the whole day), who can offer expertise in areas that people might come with questions about. Know how to painlessly burn CDs? How to walk a Windows user through what's different about Gnome or KDE desktops? How to build documents in OpenOffice? How to safely camp in Tremulous? Then you can help. You don't need to be an expert: if you know enough to be useful, and also know what your limitations are, then that's enough right there to get someone started on the basics and if you hit the wall to pass them on to the next person on the list. So, after a quick chat with Bruce I figure the best way to manage this is to sign up with what we're each willing to help with. This'll mean that, in the event of things getting overwelming, we all know who we can pass thorny questions on to and who can help with triage on queues. And if we keep copies handy, we can discreetly look it up rather than relying on some dim idea that what's-'s-name-'ve-met-twice-three-months- ago might be able to answer the question of how to create a DVD menu. And, further to that: we can keep the day flowing, and keep people's interest, if we can be sure of spot presentations during the day. These are particularly useful because it means that we can keep the technical lot fed between user-level main presentations, and the users fed in between tech-level main presentations. Hi all, We have the makings (I hope) of some great publicity for SFD. The banner I'm working on will hopefully be ready to print tomorrow, which you might guess is well past the original deadlines (and getting woefully close to the day itself). I've had some excellent stuff come in, but far far too late for our original plan of printing last Friday. I'd like to finish tonight, and there's one last thing I need: an online photo gallery that I can take a shot of. I don't need a screenshot, just a URL, of a gallery that you've created and own the rights to and are happy to have an image of the thumbnails of it released under creative commons with non-attrib. (the thumbnails, not the images themselves.) gNewSense

I just installed gNewSense this morning on my laptop, and I am rather plesantly surprised how useable it actually is! I have no inbuilt wireless, of course. Broadcom chipsets require a non-free binar blob so I was expecting that. My USB wireless adapter (ZyDAS WLA-54L WiFi) also doesn't work, which surprised me. It worked OOTB in Ubuntu so I had assumed it was using only Free software, but perhaps not. I'm fairly sure my rt2400 card would work with entirely free software, but I an't seem to find it at the moment. Pity. I've installed swfdec and I'm very happy to find it plays both youtube videos and weebls stuff. At least all the ones I've tried so far, which isn't many.. I'll have to try some flash games next. I've also installed all of the 'Free but patent-threatened' codecs and libdvdcss2. Apart from not having wireless, I can do pretty much everything I was doing before in Ubuntu. Trash folder location...

I have something stuck in my Trash folder that I can't delete because root owns it. Where is the trash directory stored in Ubuntu 8.04? It was easy when it was just ~/.Trash, but I've no idea where it is now -- I can't get into trash:/// through the command line. Makes me wish there was a 'delete as root/administrator' option in the right-click context menu. Sandy

Cloning a hard drive

Hi, I need to install a bigger hard drive in my laptop which dual boots Windows & Linux. I was wondering if anyone knows of any gotchas that I should be aware of? What I'm planning to do is to boot from the GParted liveCD and first use dd to clone the original drive with dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb and then use gparted to resize the partitions. [OT] Windows OS required

Hi all, I am looking for a copy of Windows XP (SP2 minimum) or Vista (Business or better - 64 preferred) to buy. I'm only interested in a legitimate license and media. Unfortunately I can't afford a retail version of Vista and no-one seems to have XP anymore :( If anyone has bought a pc recently and wants to offload any "Microsoft tax" that came with it I would be willing to discuss it. Please don't give me a hard time for wanting Windows. I need to rebuild my PC and there are professional and personal reasons why it's not viable for me to go Linux only. No worries, James I've cooked my machine(s) so frequently (hardware & software) & had endless issues with redmond, even if I prove I'm the legit owner of a licence (numerous through the years, actually), that I've now resorted to VM's (which may very well be a breach of licence, but I simply don't care any more). That way I can setup a basic system as I like it & back it up & store it. I can easily move it from machine to machine (and btw, run multiple copies, though I seldom do this; 1 is enough for my tests). I'd like to apologize to the XP user for the tine of my last message As Craig pointed out, it may have been construed as 'derogatory' (the reference to 'Windoze' as opposed to 'windows'). This could prove counter-productive... If I came across a bit strong, it was not my intent So here is the long & the short of it. win licensing is a nightmare. Best just get an old box with a licence & fly with that. For distro's, go to www.distrowatch.com This is the be-all & end-all for distro's, and here you can pick & choose from many, MANY distro's, fOSS & commercial. Even listing for retail suppliers of disks. Go with a "LiveCD" (or a liveUSB if you want) to non-destructively try the system(s) before committing. Make nifty gifts too. Go to ubuntuforums.org for 90% of you Linux (any distro) questions. Resource & links are comprehensive, most users aren't as abrasive as myself, and turnaround time is usually very quick. Just be sure to do a search on a topic before asking a question that's been covered many time before. If all else fails, bring your kit to an "install-fest" @ your next gLUG meeting, when & wherever that happens. BTW. check the channels to see about the upcoming SoftwareFreedomDay.org on the 20th Sept. I think the point is being missed here. This is a LUG. It's all good & fine to keep XP around for legacy reasons, either in a VM or as a dual boot option, but there are numerous licensing pit-fall's involved. Focus on the (g)Linux (please) If you want a windoze OS, the simplest is really to go to TradeMe, and get an old busted machine. Use the rest for spares, or another home linux server (IPCop firewall? mythbuntu? torrentflux? NAS/RAS?). That way windows will basically cost you the price of shipping. (or you can be sneaky & try to lay your hands on a MSDN version; 2k is still the best) Any other option option, you simply spinning your wheels & creating more problems in the long run. SFD library poster: call for contributions

Hi all, I'm preparing a display that's to occupy a poster in the public library for the two weeks leading up to Software Freedom Day. The intent is to demonstrate the usefulness and attraction of FOSS software with a whoooole bunch of screenshots, grouped (transparently) around a set of categories that'll hopefully catch all comers. Ideally: someone will walk past, see a bunch of colour, see something surprising being done with (eg) OOo Writer, and think "... if I download a copy (and become awesomely talented), *I* could do that." (whether they show up at the installfest is kindof a side goal: it'd be great, but we really want people knowing what they can do with FOSS, and also knowing that it's free and that they don't need to fork out $$$ for Office, Photoshop, Unreal, Visual Studio, or whatever. and where to get it from, of course.) To do that, we need colourful, compelling, and useful (where applicable) screenshots of a wide range of FOSS software. These screenshots need to be released under Creative Commons, so we need to draw on resources within WLUG rather than simply downloading sample screenshots. We've got around 2.4 x 1.2 metres, so we've got real estate to burn.
