Hi All. I'd just like to thank Eric Light for his donation of 9 manuals for the WLUG Library. O'reilly: "Make", "Sendmail", "System Performance Tuning", "Running Linux" and "MH & XMH for users and programmers" MIS Press: Linux Config and Install A second copy of "Unix in a Nutshell" Sams: "Teach yourself SQL in 24 hours" and "A First Book of C++" second edition - This was the textbook for Waikato Uni first year C++ course (Is it still the text?) So, some oldies but there's some gems in there also. I'll load these into the catalogue this evening from home and they will be available for loan at the next usual WLUG meeting (or by prior arrangement with WLUG financial members at my home). Certification Programme NZCS is in the process of designing and implementing a Professional Certification Programme for ICT Professionals. This internationally-aligned certification has the potential to redefine our profession, and put ICT on equal footing with other professions, such as Accountancy, Medicine and Engineering. "Professional Certification" is the cornerstone of a profession, and helps define and recognise true professionals. This is an overarching certification and is NOT the same as technical certifications; ie it is similar to "Chartered Accountant" or "Chartered Engineer" certifications for those professions rather than technical certifications (such as Microsoft or Cisco certs), although technical certifications are aligned with it. Certification Workshops This facilitated interactive workshop is your chance to not just hear about the detail of how this programme will work, but to provide significant feedback into the process as well. Okay the Relay for Life is coming up and James suggested that we put a group together to help raise our profile and also help those with Cancer. Now James has had a few things crop up and is unable to help out, however there are a few others of us keen to put together a group. You can find more details about it here http://www.relayforlife.org.nz/index/event?EventID=35 Its on March 7, 2009 Key points: * Teams consist of 10 or more: a Team Captain is elected, a Team name selected, and members submit a registration fee which will vary according to where the event is being held. Teams are encouraged to set and achieve their own FUNdraising goals in advance of the Relay and to be as creative as they wish about how they will walk, stroll or run around the track. FUNdraising can be achieved on either an individual basis or as a team. * At least one member of the team should be on the track for the duration of Relay to keep the baton passing. They are encouraged by their supporters and the electric and celebratory atmosphere that is created by the trackside entertainment and the vibrancy of everyone camping together overnight. * After you have registered you will receive a thank you confirmation, a login and password and access to the team captain and team member pages. * Cost $15 per person + whatever fund raising we can make So can I have a show of hands please who would like to help out. Kubuntu 8.10 KDE4.2 Akonadi and Kmail

Hello, Just wondered if anyone was using KDE 4.2 and had success getting Akonadi to access their mail and display it in Kmail. I can access an address boo k( via Kontact) to display via Akonadi; and stop and start the Akonadi service without errors. I have it connecting to a few IMAP email accounts but nothing actually get displayed in Kmail. I've tried Mailody http://www.mailody.net but that doesn't seem to connect to Akonadi yet. Perhaps its not functional in Kubuntu 8.10 yet? http://pim.kde.org/akonadi/ Anyone having success or similar experiences. Chris

For leisure time several new games have been added, including puzzle games as well as first-person shooters. Also notable is the introduction of "goplay", a graphical games browser offering filters, search, screenshots and descriptions for games in Debian. The availability and updates of OpenJDK, GNU Java compiler, GNU Java bytecode interpreter, Classpath and other free versions of Sun's Java technology, into Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 allow us to ship Java-based applications in Debian's "main" repository. Further improvements in system security include the installation of available security updates before the first reboot by the Debian Installer, the reduction of setuid root binaries and open ports in the standard installation, and the use of GCC hardening features in the builds of several security-critical packages. Various applications have specific improvements, too. PHP for example is now built with the Suhosin hardening patch. For non-native English speaking users the package management systems now support translated package descriptions and will automatically show the description of a package in the native language of the user, if available. Debian GNU/Linux can be installed from various installation media such as DVDs, CDs, USB sticks and floppies, or from the network. In addition to the regular installation media, Debian GNU/Linux can now also be directly used without prior installation. The special images used, known as live images, are available for CDs, USB sticks, and netboot setups. Initially, these are provided for the amd64 and i386 architectures only. The installation process for Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 has been improved in many ways: among many other improvements, support for installation from more than one CD or DVD has been restored, firmware required by some devices can be loaded by using removable media, and installations via Braille display are supported. The installer boot process has also received much attention: a graphical menu can be used to choose front-ends and desktop environments, and to select expert or rescue mode. The installation system for Debian GNU/Linux has now been translated to 63 languages. Debian GNU/Linux can be downloaded right now via bittorrent (the recommended way), jigdo or HTTP; see Debian GNU/Linux on CDs [1] for further information. It will soon be available on DVD, CD-ROM and Blu-ray Disc from numerous vendors [2], too. Upgrades to Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 from the previous release, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codenamed "Etch") are automatically handled by the aptitude package management tool for most configurations, and to a certain degree also by the apt-get package management tool. As always, Debian GNU/Linux systems can be upgraded painlessly, in place, without any forced downtime, but it is strongly recommended to read the release notes [3] for possible issues, and for detailed instructions on installing and upgrading. I have only uploaded the red and black images for the first two buttons (a blue and a red button for mouseover). I dont think I have quite got the code right as the buttons arent changing colour on mouseover. I had an online script that I used as a template, I seemed to have gone awry for some reason. I have need of a good reference/tutorial/beginners-guide-to book on perl for a short term borrow (I prefer hard-copy manuals to the web where possible) to get me up to speed so that I can optimise this site without causing headaches for the client. Can anyone help out? I've had a quick glance through the WLUG library and can't seem to find anything (I'm gonna have another in-depth look but I don't recall seeing any books on Perl in there and I know I haven't ordered any recently. Installing Open Office 3.0

hi there all I have just downloaded Open Office version 3.0 (64bit) onto my acer (Im running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy). I was expecting a program that would install the applications on my computer but there wasn't one. I attempted to run synaptic Package Manager to pick up the downloaded DEBS packages, but it doesn't appear to have recognised the newer packages, only the older 1:2.4.1 packages. There is a update script, but I cant even begin to understand it. Is there anyone who has experienced this? Glenn Morrissey.

nut and virtualbox

Hi, Recently on my Ubuntu 8.04 box the UPS monitor 'nut' stopped working. I just tracked down the problem and thought I'd mention it in case anyone else has the same issue, and hopefully someone might suggest a better solution than mine. I had installed Sun's version of virtualbox and it made vboxusers the group of all the /dev/bus/usb/* nodes (not sure if the standard version also does this). This meant that my UPS which is a USB type was not accessible to nut since it expects the group to be nut. I have worked around this by adding the nut user to the vboxusers group. I assume the issue is caused because in /etc/udev/rules.d/ the nut rule is at 52 but the virtualbox rule is at 60, which reconfigures what the nut rule did. I could also fix this by commenting out the USB rule for virtualbox but I don't really like having non standard configuration because inevitably some future update will break something. It was just announced that Wellington will host the next years LCA. www.penguinsvisiting.org.nz I couldn't be happier having just attended my first conference and being able to confirm what an unbelievable experience it ss. There is an amazing amount of work that goes into putting on the conference so I look forward to seeing if wlug can assist in some way. A thought I had today was helping to fund members to go if they are interested. I'll be discussing that idea with the committee this year and keeping in touch with the lca10 team. Radeon HD 3450 Graphics Card and a Acer 22" LCD Screen

Hello All Hey I have a Radeon HD 3450 Graphics Card and a Acer 22" LCD Screen. When I enable the Radeon restricted driver, the desktop area is now larger than my screen are abut most of it is not my background image but black screen. I wanted to enable the driver to run flightgear, but its just so damn ugly with big black bands of solid black that I can stand it no longer and disable the Radeon driver. When I do that I get my normal desktop back that does not scroll beyond the limits of the screen, but flightgear becomes completely unrunable due to it becoming agonisingly slow. Is there anything that i can do without having to replace this graphics card? Glenn Morrissey.

When I log on linux, my /dev/sda1 drive is mounted, fdrom fstab: # /dev/sda1 UUID=b52f4246-04ea-4d35-b3b9-37a316709f81 /media/Data ext3 user,relatime,errors=continue-ro 0 2 but i can't access the drive until i mount it with: glenn(a)glenn-amd1: mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /media/Data now I can see the 160 gig drives icon on my desktop, but if I move any documents to the drive, i get a 'you don't have permission' message. Hey all I have tried unplugging the network cable from the back of the machine and re-plugging it in, I have used a different port on my switch, which I have previously used and know it works well. Firts thing i did was ping 192.168.0.1 (my internet sharing machine), and was told that the network was unreachable. I have tried using a fixed ip address (192.168.0.5 and 255.255.255.0 subnet mask), still no joy. Network is unreachable. The FSF's complaint alleges that in the course of distributing various products under the Linksys brand Cisco has violated the licenses of many programs on which the FSF holds copyright, including GCC, binutils, and the GNU C Library. In doing so, Cisco has denied its users their right to share and modify the software. Hi, Does anyone know of software that will allow you to make a calender using your own pictures that can be printed out? I have searched a bit but the results are swamped by schedule/meeting type calender software. I am aware of a command line app that generates calenders in postscript that I used a while back but I can't remember a) what it was called and b) whether it could add a picture. Linksys (CISCO) has a long history of conflicted emotions over OSS. Sveasoft and OpenWRT and others have provided work around firmwares for Linksys products. Setting a linux computer to run only on the kernel that came with cd

I installed a win modem and have got it to work with ubuntu 8.04 however the driver only works with kernel 2.6.24-16-generic. hey all I have a dell laptop (Inspiron 3200) running Ubuntu 5.10 (very well to I might add, not like the 64bit Ubuntu 8.04 on my acer). Anyhow, when I want to look at files on that machine via. LAN, I am presented with a password dialog box. When I enter my password that I use as admin on that machine, It tells me that the password is wrong. Can anyone tell me where in the the filesystem is the file that contains the passwords, that I can edit with GEDIT? Glenn

hi all Im trying to get my Brother DCP-115C multifunction printer to work under Linux ubuntu 8.04. Upon trying to get my DCP-115c to work, I have consulted the brother website: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_drivers.html#2 It reccommends that users of the DCP-115c use the MFC-210C package, however, I cannot get the brother MFC-210C package to install' because when I do it comes up with the 'wrong architecture - i386' error message. Upon further reading of the page I read the following for AMD 64bit users: "For AMD64 bit users: Our CUPS drivers and CUPS wrapper drivers have been developed and optimised for 32 bit Linux distributions, a list of which can be found here: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/linux_config_list2.html However, if you are using an AMD64 bit distribution, we recommend you try copying the file named "brlpdwrapper" from /usr/lib/cups/filter to /usr/lib64/cups/filter." I have checked my /usr/lib/cups/filter directory and discovered that there was no file named "brlpdwrapper'. No surprises there, since the MFC-210C package would not install. Any suggestions? Glenn.

Hi all I am attempting to install a brother dpc- 115 multifunction printer to my newly ubuntu'd laptop. Hi Bruce Should explain that I am running Ubuntu 7.04 on my Asus Laptop. Ok, when I go to the add printer setting in the administration menu, When I click on add new printer, it reads the CUPS database and shows that the two printers that I have connected to the Asus via. USB are detected. One being the Brother DCP-115c and the other is my little Xerox Phaser 3115. When I select the Brother printer and click on Forward, it shows in the manufacturers box at the top Brother..which is good. Underneath is the model of printer..cannot see DCP 115c in the menu. According to the Brother website, I should be using the MFC-210 Debian driver (Is this correct..?). Which also isn't listed. Ok, if I need to install CSH, where can I find this package and how do I install it (bearing in mind that I am going to have to transfer any drivers to the machine via. USB stick since I dont't as yet have the network operational on the Asus. Please excuse my ignorance as I have NO experience with CUPS or printing documents in a linux OS environment. Upgrading from ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 on my laptop

Would it be a good idea to upgrade as I have every thing working on my laptop including wireless internet I have already upgraded my Desktop Computer by doing a fresh install and have eventually got everything working but with my laptop I had a considerable amount of help from wlug members. I am on the bludge for a pci video card and an agp video card.
