Full partition. Any ideas?

Hi all I have a friend with a problem. His Ubuntu system (2.26.32-x) won't boot. Booted from CD. Gparted showed partition partition size (ext3/ext4) is 120GB and 100% full. Disk analyser only shows 20GB in files (though 120GB on partition). Robbed 2GB from swap file to add to partition, but partition still shows 0% free. Can read files in the partition, but have no idea where that 100GB has gone. Since disk has another unused partition, plan of attack at the moment is to install 10.10 in the unused partition and recover data as needed. Anyone else seen this problem before? Any suggestions? Network set up

Hi I wonder if anyone could help me with suggestions for software and configeration for the following hardware network set up :- wifi link to isp via router(A). Local ip allocation by router(A) (say 192.168.2.3 ... but could be different depending upon state of router and other connections to it.) Wifi network card(A) in relatively low spec pc (B)... ideally 256-512 M memory ... x86 ... cd live or flash drive boot ... hopefully also sans monitor and keyboard and supporting web based interface for set up from local network administered by C (below) Ether Net card in same pc(B) connects to a separate wifi router(C) .. which sees this link as its route to the intenet/isp and accepts ip allocation from B .. Router(C) allocates local ip numbers on another domain (say 10.1.1.1-256) Router C supports both wifi and ehternet connections. I suppose B is a sort of router .. except that it is working in reverse to the normal expectation? Knoppix 6.4

Hi, guis, As a newbe-to-nominal Linux user am delighted by (live) Knoppix 6.4: it sees Windows' FAT32 partitions by a mere click on its interface and can save files on C:\ without any fuss. Connecting to Broadband is automatic; as fast as in Windows or faster. Such connection seems to mean avoiding known Windows' prerogatives (plus unknown ones) and it may also be possible skirting Windows by saving files of a dedicated DOS partition. Ditar.

fiber attached storage

Hi. I have 3 servers , and 4 fiber cards (2 of infineon with intel chip, and 2 with qlogic chip ) . So what I want to have one server as storage and 2 running esxi, booting over the fiber, off the storage server. I'm looking for a Howto on setting up a storage server that presents storage over fiber. I have worked with Xiotech fiber storage devices, from an administration of resources, so my knowledge of fibre technology is limited. But this is a home project build on donated hardware, so I need to build my own fiber storage server .. I have googled and yet to find a clear howto on this... iSCSI as common storage

Hi. I would like to avoid setting up a file server as back-end to my web server cluster, as this would give a single point of failure. Give we are running a iSCSI array of 8 nodes with redundancy and replication etc, I would like to take advantage of this. It's the first time I'll be working with iSCSI from within Linux. A) is it possible and b) if it is, how do I best configure multiple machine to use the same iSCSI LUN / data store, as a "common share " . I assume I need a more advance file system that ext3. Hi WLUGers My wife has an old PC circa 2000. It's still in working order. included are a monitor, cables, box (holding hard disc, CD-ROM and floppy disk), keyboard and mouse. OS may be Windows 98 and also may be loaded with Office 2000. Haven't booted it for a while. This machine is free to a good home. Hi Rod and WLUG fellows - I am a PCBSD (or FreeBSD) user and have attended couples of WLUG activities recently including Monday meetings, Saturday workshops, SFD2008(a)Waikato University, SFD2010(a)Central Plaza and eDay2010. I have for the last few years been using and contributing to FLOSS both on *BSD and Windows, and have also been spreading the word of FLOSS whenever there is "appropriate" chance. For a long time I have usually, if not always, felt that *BSD, Linux or even FLOSS is still giving the general public a wrong impression that these are for geeks but not for the them to use. One example is that all books regarding Linux are titled something like "Building a Linux server system", "Linux systems", "xxx Programming Language Bible" etc whereas undeniably these would scare most general users away. While more general books and online tutorials for general users are coming out nowadays, these are still far less than those technical stuff. Another example is that the term Linux refers not to a OS but to a kernel, whereas general users just don't realise the difference between them nor do they care what they exactly are; all they care is - how to use those common/useful software in their daily lives. This is what the public is interested in as well as in need of the most. Linux? System administrating? Programming? These are definitely useful for techies but sorry most people just don't intend to bother them. As a side note, in NZ there used to be a user group called NZFUG (New Zealand FreeBSD User Group) but apparently they have disbanded years ago, which I believe is due to fail to draw the public's interest mainly for the similar reason. Sadly enough, all official FreeBSD webpage/ftp mirror sites in NZ were also discontinued due to the lack of maintainers for ages. I see WLUG is unfortunately following the same path. WLUG has been holding several interesting talks in the meetings as well as valuable activities, I felt WLUG (and probably other FLOSS-related user groups too) needs to focus more on the general user base. An introduction to Inkscape given by Stephen last month is a good start. I think similar tutorials/seminars about other FLOSS e.g. GIMP, Scribus etc would be helpful for both the user group and the public. While technical skills is an important part of WLUG, I think expanding and promoting FLOSS to a wider audience urgently need to be prioritised - if the user group is still to be continued. I also think that the user group had better not claim something like FLOSS/Linux but instead use the term FOSS as this otherwise would give the public an impression that all these was only for Linux, whereas in fact FLOSS exist on *BSD, Windows and other platforms. That said, by using the term "FLOSS" instead of "FLOSS/Linux" it would be less likely to limit ourselves from the otherwise potential yet wide user base. I was even dreaming that, if I were to lead the WLUG, I would rename the user group to say WFUG (Waikato FLOSS User Group) and merge those FLOSS users at the Waikato or even in NZ from other platforms - regardless of *BSD, Linux, Mac or Windows. Perhaps it is only by combining these sparse forces that could increase the odds to sustain the FLOSS community at Waikato or in NZ in the long run. Regarding the finances, I felt some expenses had not been necessary nor worth the outcomes. Software Freedom Day this year was actually not really successful as people really do not want to be disturbed in the middle of their shopping by someone proposing FLOSS. As for the Internet usage/cost, I think Internet is also not necessary in the Saturday workshops as the workshop shouldn't be a free Internet cafe (another reason is that downloading in NZ is by nature not favourable due to the restriction in the monthly Internet usage policy in NZ). To help visitors install FLOSS/ISOs these could have been prepared on disks in advance rather than repeatedly downloaded during the workshop. Another thing I felt WLUG needs to improve is communication within the user group member as well as with the public. Take eDay2010 for example, some people was told by the user group that he would be assigned the time and tasks by email before eDay whereas ultimately he didn't get any contact from the user group. Communication within the user group needs to be organised and improved. As for the communication with the public, this has largely to do with advertisement. Not many people know about WLUG and the activities the user group has been holding. There are actually many low-cost or even free yet more effective ways to advertise WLUG activities... for instance Facebook, Tweet, or "chain-email" through friends of friends etc. Just my two cents. Old computers and Eday

Hello all, I've got two Toshiba Satelite Laptops to give away, both very old. First laptop 8M of RAM. I can get Tom's Rescue Boot Floppy for work on it but haven't manage to get Basic Linux installed though its been a few years since my last attempt. Second laptop 32M of RAM. I can get Damn Small Linux to work on it using a CD drive. The screen is damaged on the right side - about an 8mm strip of black pixels. I also have a desktop computer case that formally housed a Pentium III motherboard circa 2001. You're also welcome to the motherboard but it no longer goes. I've also got some SCSI components and tape drives if anyone is interested. All these will end up at eDay for recycling if no one would like them. Please contact me off list if you're interested. Spontaneous suspend

Hi, I have a laptop running Kubuntu 8.04 and it has begun spontaneously going to sleep a short time after I log in. After resuming everything appears to work fine. If I don't log in then it will sit on the greeter screen without suspending. I suspect there is something in my .kde/ that is doing this. Anyone know what I should be looking for? Let me know if you have had problem playing flash videos at all, I've had a fair few problems with it logging up. I have tried kde, gnome, kdm, gdm, straight X windows without anything, Brand new login with fresh profile etc and still getting the bug. Chrome has its own flash plugin which still has the problem, firefox with standard plugin also has the same bug. basically after about 2 mins it locks up, the active window is still usable (ie a konsole) , and mouse moves but can't click. I can use the keyboard to type but not to navigate alt+tab to other windows etc. I can get to tty1 and back no problems but again not change windows in the window manager. If anyone has got a similar problem, or a fix, let me know. Upgrading to Maverick...

As far as I can tell, Maverick seems to work just fine. However, I haven't installed it yet. Has anyone here got a dual-boot system with Windows 7? I've read about this bug where grub2's bootloader is overwritten after running Windows, and I don't know if it applies to this distribution as well -- I'm rather wary of upgrading (a clean install in this case, as I'm skipping Lucid) as a result. I would like to upgrade, as it finally fixes the inability of my laptop to mute the internal speakers when headphones are plugged in (that's really the major reason why I want to upgrade; the other one is that Karmic's running rather slowly after a year). Remote adminstration

Hello all, Is there a tool in ubuntu that a user can start that reports the real world ip address and configures a home router to open a port to allow remote administration? I have a friend or two for whom it would nice to get them to start a program, report to me the details via MSN or Skype or telephone etc and allow me to log in and fix or make a configuration change to their machine. I know how to set things up using ssh etc but that relies on some initial configuration at the their end. KDE has a nice VNC invite function but it won't do the router config part. It appears the likes of KTorrent and Azuereus have the ability to do some to the router via UPnP to open ports up on the router dynamically so I am guessing all this is possible. Cheers

Using a laptop as an access point

Hi all, Does anyone know if there is an easy way to configure a wireless card as an access point in Kubuntu 8.04? (I don't really want to go through the carnage of an upgrade at this stage) I found these instructions: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?action=printpage;topic=3096387.0 but they involve a lot of manual settings. I think I read somewhere on my searches that the in recent versions of Ubuntu you can do this by selecting an option in Network Manager. Ideally something like that is what I am looking for. I think the user group could have made use of many other resources such as Facebook or Tweet etc. I have circulated an event advertisement (see below) to my department in university and friends (some of which is working at HCC). Let's see how many of them will show up. ========= Advert from here ============ This Saturday sees Hamilton's very own Software Freedom Day (SFD) event. An annual worldwide event since 2004, SFD is designed to be both a celebration of free software's successes and a public education effort to help further its acceptance. It has a fairly impressive sponsor and partner list, including Google, Canonical, Sun, the FSF, and more Organised by the Waikato Linux User Group (WLUG), the open day will feature volunteers showing visitors the extent of open source software and its capabilities. Internationally, the goal of Software Freedom Day is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality Free and Open Source Software (FOSS / FLOSS) in education, in government, at home, and in business. In Hamilton this event was once held at Waikato University in 2008, and this year we will be at Centreplace near Whitcouls all this Saturday from 9am to 5pm. We will have a couple tables w/ 4-5 workstations setup running all the popular programs including GIMP/Inkscape. We will have a new “Kiaora DVD 10.09” which we will be giving out (a collection of Free software for Windows similar to The OpenDisc). We will also have some Ubuntu cds and some WLUG brochures. We may possibly have some demonstrations about how general public can make use of FLOSS in their daily life. Cairo cross compile

Perhaps we can arrange a computer or two to demonstrate (or even tutor) how general public can make use of FLOSS in their daily life/work? For instance, use the GIMP or Inkscape to draw some pictures/icons and edit their photographs (somewhat like street performance so as to attract people to come over SFD). We need to update the information on softwarefreedomday.org and softwarefreedomday.org.nz We've still got a bit of organising to do regarding tables, displays, things to hand out. kiaora dvd is mostly done using the same system-browser autorun as the 2006 cd. I'd still like to clean up the html templates a lot and use the k-meleon cd browser kit, but if we had to it's nearly good enough to hand out as-is. KPPP and modems

http://linuxmint.com/ A little while ago, there was a bit of lament about the lack of dial up modem support for modern distros. I downloaded the latest iso for Linux Mint KDE edition a week or so and was suprised to find that it has KPPP installed by default. Just wondering if linuxmint might be a better option for those without ADSL access. To be fair, I didn't actually try the modem since I was just running the live CD of a USB stick. Cheers, Chris

OpenSUSE 11.3 DVDs

All Woohoo, The 200 openSUSE 11.3 DVDs I ordered in anticipation of SFD arrived yesterday. I'll be at the meeting on Mon night if anyone wants one. They're very cool, Dual sided, 64 bit one side and 32 bit the other. Two live environments, KDE and Gnome so people can check out each DE. wiki down

As you might have noticed the wiki has been down. The switch failed that we have at Orcon. No one really wants to manage the equipment at Orcon anymore anyway, and we have a VPS donated by Rimuhosting where some backups are stored. If anyone wants to work on restoring these backups just send me an email off list and I can get you the access you need. I'm on holiday right now, and don't have time to look at it. I installed the Postgres database server on the VPS but it's a newer version than what the wiki was using before, so there may be some issues with that. I'll be back in another week, and can look at it more then if needed. Best, John

Technology has always been used to respond in times of crisis, but in the last decade internet access has enabled new approaches to saving lives and reducing misery. Several organizations, including Google, are developing systems to help disaster responders and people affected by a disaster. Detailed aerial and satellite imagery is accelerating disaster response, and SMS and internet-based systems improve communication allowing victims of a disaster to request help. This talk will describe specific responses to disasters this year such as the earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and China, and man-made disasters like the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Craig received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waikato in 1996. He moved to the US and founded Google’s first remote engineering centre in New York. He led the development of 'Froogle', played a key role in developing Google Maps, and Google in Māori. He will be honoured this year by the University of Waikato with its Distinguished Alumni Award. Hi I need to download my Endian Firewall development environment from my VPS in the US. I'm having platform issues with the cross compiling, so want to move it to my desktop thats running 32 bit Fedora. I'm in a rural area in Hamilton and having connectivity issues. Slingshot dialup not authenticating

Just been tearing my hair out with trying to set up a temporary system (using Suse!! - also Lighthouse Puppy) for a friend on dialup. Couldn't get wvdial to work, kppp was doing some strange things (including query modem not talking to the modem!). Eventually discovered minicom which enabled me to talk to the modem manually. Dialled Xtra ... fine and clear prompts coming back. Dialled slingshot ... couldn't make head or tail of what came back - reminded me of the results of mismatched send/receive speeds. Anyone got any clues. MS Windows connects fine, so that might be the only answer. Michael

Just got the word from the people at linmodems that dialup modems are not supported on 64 bit versions of linux. Thats not catastrophic, I can use my Windows laptop to connect to the net and internet share across my home network, until I can get ADSL. Now all I have to do is make my Linux system communicate with my windows laptop. I have manually configured my networking settings on my Linux system, and can ping both ways, but cant get internet sharing up and running. I think the problem is with settings on my windows laptop. WLUG Blade Server

There is a problem with the switch connected to the WLUG Blade server. We are not sure what the problem is, other than some IPs are not working. We possibly need a new switch. Does anyone have one? I'm able to schedule a call-out, if someone is able to go to the data center and replace the switch. A call out will cost us $50 for every 30 min. Is anyone able to help with this? New DVD drive unusable in Lucid...

I got hold of an old computer, and managed to put Lucid on it. At the time, it had an old CD-RW drive in it. Now it's got a brand new DVD +/- RW drive, and Lucid can show me that it exists, but it can't mount any discs. In XFCE, it shows the error 'Method "Mount" with signature "ssas" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist'. The problem is pretty much as described on this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1509538. I would have installed Windows, but I didn't have any working Windows XP discs (or a valid key), and even installing Lucid was rather hit and miss. I can't reinstall Lucid to see if that fixes the problem as I'm not at home, and I didn't bring my Lucid disc (or if I did, it's corrupt). If anyone has idea of how to fix this problem (the computer's for my parents, aren't they're not exactly computer savvy, even with Windows XP), I would very much appreciate a solution. If worst comes to worst, would a complete reinstall work (even if I have to download the ISO again, although I'm not sure I have access to a spare CD). I have until Saturday, which is when I have to go home. Sandy (rather desperate)

I've just got hold of an old Dell Latitude with a 600MHz Celeron and 128MB RAM (4MB given to video), and I can't put anything on it except Puppy Linux (which I don't much like) and Damn Small Linux (which can't properly deal with the USB flash drives I tried with it). The Latest in Digital Forensics and e-Crime Digital Forensics and e-Crime is a rapidly developing and cutting edge discipline of ICT, contributing more and more significantly to crime investigations in New Zealand and globally every year. The NZ Police e-Crime Group is responsible for managing the digital forensics for the NZ Police via three e-Crime Labs throughout the country. In this presentation Maarten Kleintjes, head of the NZ Police National Electronic Crime Group, will give an update on the latest local and international work in digital forensics and e-Crime including recent examples of high profile cases where digital forensics played a key part in cracking the case. These days there are very few crimes committed that don’t have an electronic component to evidence and the number of exhibits have increased from around 40 a year in 1985 to over 16,000 in recent years. This ranges from people using their computer to research how to commit a crime (or ironically how to get away with it!), or emails or text messages which often unknowingly give the game away, through to more complicated analysis. Maarten will also outline EVE, the Environment for Virtualised Evidence, the world-leading system created by the NZ e-Crime Group and launched last year to revolutionalise the efficient and timely collection, indexing and analysis of electronic evidence. This system dramatically changed the turnaround of a Detective submitting a computer for analysis and access to files and information from many months or years to several days. The NZ Police e-Crime Group is leading the world in the area of digital forensics, and this presentation will provide significant insight into this fascinating area. Note: Light lunch provided.
