Hi After playing with my networking settings in Breezy, I seem to have lost some data from my /etc/hosts file. Partly it requires editing to add to add "ubuntuDavid" to it. However without it I can't log in as root to edit it. Can't find password! I can't edit it with Knoppix, I don't have permission. Is there any way to edit it or is it a reinstall job. As it is I can't connect to the net or anything requiring root privilege. Thanks David Bowen

Skype working better for Linux

Folks, I'm meant to be making a Skype call at 5 am tomorrow (yeah!!) to talk about Linux but I have had bad experiences with Skype previously with sound working (or more to the point not!) and preferred not to use Windows in case I need to look something up that I'm talking about. Anyway I've now found that Skype for Linux has a new beta out which now uses ALSA by default as the sound system instead of OSS. What this means is that sound seems to "just work" now for me. Nothing there! Bnonn. I ran your script but it just looked for repositories, Not found of course as we have no Internet connection. Have not been able to network Breezy with Dapper or SUSE 10.1 yet. Can ping them both ways but cant get Internet connection through them to patch Yast yet. Regards David

I am an application packager by trade (MS environment) and the latest version of Wise Package Studio (http://www.wise.com/Products/Packaging/Overview.aspx) supports creation and editing of RPM files. The beauty of this tool is how simple it is to create and deploy consistent applications to large enterprises (we package the application to work consistently on 2k/xp/vista/citrix). I know it is doing nothing that couldn't already be done via a command line packaging tool but a lot of companies have already invested massive amounts of money in Wise infrastructure with delegated rights, deployment systems and reporting and would love to be able to apply those processes to their Linux systems. So now with Wise and Notes I can build 2 (MS/RPM) packages following the same configuration and testing steps and have every user running the same application and configuration while my manager can manager the teams workflows and productivity via the reporting functions. I know most of you will not see it this way, but this is a massive leap forward for Linux in the Standard Operating Environments that I help design and deploy. Lotus Notes is now running on Linux: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060710-7222.html IBM have a stated goal to run much of their business on Linux and since they own Lotus they will have converted this as they probably use heavily. Intel-536 modem on Dapper
